After months of bloody knuckles, frustration, and surfing the web for killer deals, it’s time to finally see the hard earned evidence. The Dart had a decent 1/8 mile pass while dragging the rear brakes but, the new muscle crowd worry more about Hp/Tq that track times. Time to see what this Hooptie Dart puts down at the Dyno.

I owned a 1968 Plymouth fury 3 back around 1990. I had a bs job at a gas station. The little old lady that owned the car died and the son dropped off the car at the gas station and said first $500 takes it. The owner of the gas station told me not to buy it. He wanted the manager to get the fury. Well screw them I bought the fury and got fired. It was worth it,the fury had a 318 in it and I was impressed with the power of that 318. The 318 is a damn fine motor

Thank you! This 318 performed a lot better than I had expected given such a low buck build. Makes for a great cruiser and a fairly competitive racer among other street cars.

My first car was a 1072 Plymouth Duster. Hemi Orange with the blacked out hood and strobe stripes up the center. Long black stripes down the sides. Just like a 340 Duster, but no 340 on it. It had a Valiant grille and rally wheels with white letter tires. It came with a 318 and 3 speed on the floor. 8 3/4 3:23 gears.This was 1976 and the car was fresh as when new. All a 17 year old would want.I was a Junior in High School and street racing in the South was alive and well. But I was just a little underpowered for any attempt at being the quickest at school. That soon changed with my new friendship with another gearhead. We took to getting all the parts needed to make a street screamer out of this 318. I purchased some 340 heads and had them massaged by the local speed shop. Also installed a dual point disttribtor and edlbrock dual plane intake. Accel super coil with matching 9mm yellow wires. A pair of cyclone long tube headers and turbo mufflers. Also had to add the Duster chrome tailpipes. Carter 750 off a 440 rejetted. Black crinkle valve covers and a cam dynamics high lift and long duration cam. Heavy duty clutch. I don`t know how much hp it made or torque. But I can tell you it went undefeated at school and out ran only twice on the street. I did not run every car that challenged me but I was street smart enough to know cars that were the real deal. This little 318 moved that Duster and I was always accused of lying about the engine size. Made a few dollars with it and only lost money twice. The little Orange Duster had quite a reputation around the schools of the area as being pretty quick. There were quite a few quicker cars in town for sure. But I had better sense than to lose money to them. I miss those times and that little Duster. But I have my 70 Challenger and 70 GTX to dull the pain😁. Thanks for the video and never underestimate the power of a 318. You proved just how much it improves with the right parts.

I had a chance to buy a 71 Dodge Dart with a 318 ( back in 1980) for $400 . It had a broken steering control arm and cracked / leaking steering gear box . I was too young and didn’t have the money or know how to fix it back then and so I passed on it to buy a different car . It was a clean car , no rust , straight body and ran perfect . Boy I wish I could go back in time now ! Those 318’s are strong engines , very buildable !

Geez good HP! I own a 1980 Chrysler here in Australia (on my channel) With the famous 318. I chose a comp 268h cam,edelbrock performer intake,500 avs eddy carby. Hei ignition with a full 2.5 inch exhaust and extractors. Diff ratio was changed to 3:45. The machine shop installed heavier springs on the otherwise stock heads. Mine made 220hp on the dyno. Certainly by far better than when it was all completely stock. Yours goes and sounds awesome mate. Great engines.

That’s not bad at all! For comparison sake, my carbed 5.9 magnum with a bone stock bottom end, bad timing curve and less than idle tune made 198 hp at 4,400rpm and 250 lb ft at 3600rpm to the wheels. New timing curve, better headers, speedmaster heads and regroups cam should really wake mine up as well!
@sorta_stock
@sorta_stock Год назад
Have you done a compression test on the 5.9? I would imagine you could probably get an additional 15-20hp just from a proper tune.
@75slant6
@75slant6 Год назад
Sorry, I hadn’t seen your reply from way back. No, I haven’t ever done a compression test on it. I do know that my tune was far from ideal. I’ve installed a different distributor and am working on getting the timing curve ideal. Also swapped from a 1404 Edelbrock to a 1405 so it should pick up some power once I get this all dialed in.

@PotatoeJoe69

@@1080sucks If you want some cheap power, find yourself a set of 302 heads. These came on all the EFI trucks with 318's and 360's from 1986 - 1991. Both the 318's and 360's used identical heads, but keep in mind they are made for a hydraulic roller cam setup. You can probably find them in a junkyard for $100 or less. They have essentially the exact same design as the later Magnum heads, but of course are for LA blocks. If you want to spend some money and get a set ot heads that'll bring compression up significantly and flow better than anything else you can buy, get yourself some Trick Flow heads. I've seen them support over 600hp out of the box.

Putting together a low budget 318 for my 70 Dodge truck. Going to have the rebuild an engine. I have 3, one has a flat cam and a pile of miles, one is already.030 over and has a lot of rust in the cylinders from sitting, and the last one is stock bore but worn out to the point that it for sure will need at least .030 over. The plan is to put a stock 2 barrel back on it for break in and then switch over to the Edelbrock TR5 tunnel ram intake with a pair of Edelbrock 500 CFM AVS2 carbs on it. Going with progressive linkage and using the rear carb as the primary. I have the tall open plenum so lean condition shouldn't be a problem. I might have to cut a hole in the hood to clear all of this and install a scoop. I was looking at the shaker design used on the Cuda.
@sorta_stock

Sounds like the one with a bunch of miles would be great with a quick ring and bearing job. I love Tunnel ram intakes. Definitely gives it a great wow factor.

Comp xe268h and later model swirl port small valve heads, 1986-91 and this old motor pulls decent with a 3000 stall converter. About 2k investment into a ratty but free from the ex girlfriend 72 Scamp makes a nice sleeper. Go Mopar!

No, this is rear wheel horsepower, huge difference from the gross HP ratings they used in the 60's. The 383 2bl was rated at 275-290 HP gross, you would be lucky to get 170 rear wheel hp from that engine. Graveyard cars too a stock, albeit tired 440 Magnum, that was in a 1969 Daytona Charger and put it on a chassis dyno and it only made 205 HP: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ya35cp2jwSA.html
