On November 3rd, the largest planet in our solar system will reach this year's opposition. This means that it is directly opposite the sun as seen from Earth. It rises at sunset and sets again at sunrise, so it can be seen in the sky all night long. Since it also reached its closest distance to the earth on November 1st at "only" 596 million kilometers, it is particularly easy to see. This so-called perihelion opposition is one of the best in the 12 year period. And the good observation conditions continue for a long time even after the opposition. Anyone who observes Jupiter through a telescope or telephoto lens can also see four of its moons, Io, Callisto, Ganymede and Europa. And in addition to the good visibility of Jupiter, it is also worth looking at the night sky to look for shooting stars. With the Taurids and the Leonids, several meteor showers reach their peak during November.
