I've recently bought a JPT 416 pocket trumpet, in second hand, for 200 eu, in a pretty good state. It's a good little trumpet, more easy to carry with you everywhere. It sounds great. I like it very much.

Hi Gordon, after a 20+ year break, l decided to get back into horn playing. I’ve always been fascinated with the pocket trumpets, I’m a Don Cherry fan...., and it was your words, “this is a viable instrument” that gave me the push l needed to splash out on a Carol Brass GL3000 pocket trumpet. Thank you sir.

Great review Gordon, I have just purchased one of these from a music shop in Bristol advertised as unused/new old stock, and I thought one of these would be great to throw in the motorhome, that’s if I will be able to prise it away from my great nephew once he claps his eyes on it! I saw him for the first time since lockdown and he’s shot up and I got one of my bugles out for him to have a try as I’d love for him to enter the world of brass and for a seven yr old lad he was blowing away and loving it. I then let him blow the cornet and they were rough but he was managing to blow various notes valve free. So I decided to send him home with an old bugle on the condition that he looks after it and promises to keep practicing along with some tips for mum and dad to keep him interested. Thanks again for all of your videos as I’ve found them really educational and interesting, everyday’s a learning day.

These are really useful instruments. I have taken mine to many places where I couldn't take an instrument normally. Glad you like it.

Thanks Gordon, that was a thorough and concise review. l quite fancy a Jupiter pocket cornet and now l can track one down with confidence. All the suppliers and manufacturers should send their horns to you for scrutiny.

Thanks. You can pick the Jupiter ones up quite cheaply. The mouthpiece in the case is a 3C but with a bigger throat which I feel helps with the blow.

Thanks for the informative review. I've had a Jupiter for years and love it. One thing. It doesn't support low notes very well.
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 6 лет назад
Yes, that can be an issue, they tend to be bit indistinct. When I bought this it had a gold plated 3C Jupiter mouthpiece with it which has a much bigger throat than normal and this mouthpiece does help with that issue.

Indeed... Still, the tone quality is surprisingly full and the valves do work quite well. I'm still partial to my old Holton Helm Model 2 mouthpiece, but the mouthpiece supplied is not too bad. I don't mean to pester you. Thanks again for your review. I also loved your playing.

I recently purchased a Carol Brass CPT 3000 GLS-L pocket trumpet. It sounds really well. Clearly, it doesn't have the quality of my B6 Schilke trumpet, but I would take it to any small setting for some jazz tunes.

Hi,Nice review. I have a Jupiter SPT 416 pocket trumpet that I bought in the early 1980s. A nice trumpet with excellent valve action.

got me in with your playing right there in the beginning. seen a lot of these vids. yours definitely the best. because of that alone. I like your music. that was you? or some known composition? was really beaut. really stood out. really did. :) p.s. one question though: aren't you supposed to be wearing a kilt and staggering around outside a pub smacking people in the mouth?

Gorgeous tone! I just got my hands on an instrument that looks identical to the JPT-416 but is engraved "Brasswood" and has the floral engravings. The previous owner claims its 1970s vintage. Do you know if it is also made by JHS?
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 3 года назад
It probably is. I had one in the 80s that was similar but engraved with a dealers name.

Should I ask for one for Christmas? I have a normal sized one but I want to play this one like when going on trips or something.

It is definitely useful for that kind of thing, but it is not as good as a proper pro Bb trumpet.

Wow even these novelty instruments are like 1000 bucks. I've always loved trumpet (electric bass player) and i was like oo thats neat maybe i'll get that. Psych, it was 1000 bucks.

I do have an excellent pocket trumpet for trainning but is quite difficult to find mutes with a perfect fitting inside the bell. Do you know any that fits in your pocket trumpet?
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 7 лет назад
Felipe Koeller All my normal mutes fit but are too long. Humes and Berg Pixie mute looks better but is not a great sound.

I used to have Weril pocket trumpet. I sold it. I'm thinking about buying one again. How do you compare the Jupiter to the Weril?
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 2 года назад
The Weril was better. Very different instruments though. The Weril was longer.
@korelly

It seems you need a separate case to carry your mutes. Or is there any compartment in the case for at least one mute?
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 5 лет назад
korelly There is no room for mutes in the case that is supplied with it.

Nice review, Gordon. I just traded an nice CarolBrass pocket for a vintage 52 Olds LA Ambassador. I noticed your little pumpkin bucket in the background. Do you Scots celebrate Halloween like we do in the states?
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 7 лет назад
Jon Nick We have different traditions here, but the American ones are gradually taking over. We have pumpkins now, but traditionally we hollowed out turnips to make lanterns. We also went "guising" from house to house which is a bit like trick or treat but you would not necessarily dress as something scary.
@golf4funjn532
@golf4funjn532 7 лет назад
Turnips, how interesting. I really liked the CarolBrass pocket I had but it was difficult to hold and that's why I traded it for another full sized trumpet. It's something how the pockets can sound like a full sized horn. Enjoy your videos!

Because of their smaller size and tighter wind, are they easier or harder to play? (Do they take more or less air?)
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 7 лет назад
They are definitely tighter. You can overcome this a bit by using a more open mouthpiece. I find tighter instruments tire me out more quickly.
@skaterdude7277

Would you say that it would benefit practice on the pocket trumpet as it makes going back to the other trumpet not as difficult? In guitar, it's encouraged to play acoustic because the strings and tension is so much higher to get a fuller sound, so then electric guitar is easier.
@mikelisacarb
@mikelisacarb 6 лет назад
My pocket trumpet has a 4inch/10cm bell. Does anybody know who to contact about getting mutes for this smaller sized bell? I'm in a weird but wonderful situation where I mostly perform acoustically, backing up 1-2 singer/guitarists strolling amongst diners in small rooms of country inns. I currently use a cornet with a Harman mute, and that seems to be a good volume. Does anybody have any ideas about how I can get a similar mute setup for my pocket trumpet?
@jonathantorok2165
@jonathantorok2165 6 лет назад
Yes I bought a Humes and Berg 108 Stonelined Velvetone Bucket Mute (4 Inch) however as the bell on mine is even smaller, I fix it over the bell with 3 adjustable tie wraps (+ sheathing). holds well that way but tricky to get in place. But still as it's loud ( and I practise in a small room) so I've put a small mute bag over it. I have difficulty keeping it in tune but I believe that's more my ability that the trumpet (+ need to learn to play quieter I think). p.s. if you do play in a small room with a bucket mute on a Pocket , I'd use musician's ear plugs as the bell is so close and you may do yourself an injury ! oh and yes the sound is great (not thin) as you're not shoving anything into the bell that way !

how is the resistance compared to cornet or trumpet

Provided you buy a decent one. I see the Jupiter ones selling quite cheaply second hand. I have taken mine to many places on holiday and business trips now. Very useful.

The thing that i don't understand is that trumpets and these brass instruments seem light. I mean no amp or chords or anything but the instrument itself and its case. Why couldn't you just take your trumpet? Also didn't know trumpets had slides.
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 6 лет назад
Mark Anthony There is a real risk of denying one of the tubes if you don't use the case. I have travelled with one of these with no case but buried in the middle of my suitcase.
@Trioptio
@Trioptio 4 года назад
right now I am travelling around with a full size trumper on a backpacking trip. I know that it is a little instrument, but in this situation, if it could be any smaller I'd appreciate it a lot. Half the size is then a bigt difference. Besides, they are so cute!
