Turkeys are honestly terrifying. We have a wild turkey in my town that’s literally been terrorizing the traffic light that leads into down town. He’s a MENACE. lol but we don’t want to hurt him so we just let him do as he pleases. He has evaded all capture so we’ve just given up. He knows he’s won. He remembers when he was a raptor. Well they were actually closer on size to a coyote and given the size of their claws they could still hurt an adult human since at that point is just like being stabbed. Quite dislike the turkey analogy since it often downplay these animals, they were more comparable to some sort of ground eagle/hawk

I’m glad you mentioned the velociraptors in Jurassic Park are actually Deinonychus, but are slightly wrong about Crichton’s motivations, When writing the novel, one of his primary research sources was Predatory Dinosaurs of the World by paleo artist Gregory Paul. Paul inaccurately lumped Deinonychus into the genus Velociraptor. Alan Grant even repeats this mistake in the novel. Anyway, Crichton did like the name, but he was relying on Paul’s error for naming.
@DYXAnims69
@DYXAnims69 10 месяцев назад
And it was assumed that Utahraptor was the basis when in reality Utahraptor was not discovered yet (It was discovered mid-production) and Deinonychus was the most largest dromaeosaur at the time.
@MrTroodon_Official
@MrTroodon_Official 10 месяцев назад
This is also to a degree the same reason they are called Velociraptor in the film and they used the same resources Crichton did. You can see it is called Deinonychus through production and there is even an older unused bit of script of wich Grant talks about Velociraptors hunting Tenontosaurus in the past wich si clearly him talking about Deinonychus. I mean like, that's the reason you see em digging a "Velociraptor" on Montana
@Merennulli
@Merennulli 10 месяцев назад
(EDIT: My post here is very likely wrong. I am deferring to the correction by walt776 further down who seems more informed than I believe myself to be. Leaving the original up so as not to hide my wrongness.) Gregory Paul is wrong now, but he wasn't wrong then. Deinonychus at that time was "Velociraptor antirrhopus" but was moved to its own genus in the 80s. And it's still not a firm classification. As recently as 2021, a study put it in the Velociraptorinae subfamily within the Dromaeosaurinae family, but in 2022 another study put it back directly under Dromaeosaurinae.

@walt776
@walt776 10 месяцев назад
@@Merennulli No, that was pretty much all him. Most paleontologists didn’t buy that classification. Paul was the one who moved the species antirrhopus into the Velociraptor genus. And scientists at the time didn’t buy it. But it gave Crichton a cooler sounding name to use.

One piece of information that was skipped in the video: Deinonychus was previously called Velociraptor antirrhopus. In Michael Crichton's novel, it is an important plot point that the scientists who genetically engineered the Jurassic Park dinosaurs didn't know much about dinosaurs. Basically, the genetists couldn't tell Velociraptor antirrhopus from Velociraptor mongoliensis. That plot point was omitted from the movie, but they kept the name Velociraptor even though Deinonychus had been renamed by that time.
@Magmafrost13
@Magmafrost13 9 месяцев назад
This is a popular myth, but its not true. Deinonuchus was never classified in the Velociraptor genus. However, paleo-artist Gregory S Paul once tried to reclassify it as such in his extremely popular book Predatory Dinosaurs of the World, which Crichton once cited as inspiration for Jurassic Park
@SmartCatDad
@SmartCatDad 9 месяцев назад
@@Magmafrost13 You are incorrect. John Ostrom, the paleontologist who discovered Deinonychus, also listed it as Velociraptor antirrhopus during one of the several taxon reshuffles that dinosaur taxonomy has gone through.

My headcanon for the films has always been that they knew they were re-creating a deinonychus but stuck with the name velociraptor because it sounded cooler and more marketable. They were a theme park attraction, after all, relying on genetics to create chimeras to exhibit for profit. So even as a kid, I imagined this scene taking place before the movie starts where the scientists explain all this to Hammond and he brushes them off, saying that he's already spared no expense on t-shirts, cups, and plushies that say 'velociraptor' on them.

@@darkonyx6995 Even in the video the display model (6:10) is shown with fuzzy feathers which are more similar to ostrich feathers. There are two things I would like to bring up. First thing, Velociraptors may or may not have been vicious. And, since I love these animals so much, I'm betting on the latter option. The movies made them much more ferocious than they really were. Apparently, the films and most people ignore the line spoken by Roland Tembo in the second *JURASSIC PARK* film: *Predators don't hunt when they're not hungry.* It's interesting that many people criticize the size and the lack of feathers of the film's Raptors while they blindly accept their vicious behavior. Hollywood made "monsters" out of these misunderstood animals. I blame Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg for portraying these animals that way...all in the name of Science Fiction entertainment. And, the second thing is that the film's Raptors appear to be the size of a Dromaeosaur called Achillobator, rather than Deinonychus. While the latter dinosaur was found in the right location to where the film's Raptor was found, the former dinosaur seems to be the right size.
