A quick camera tracking & compositing test using my raptor models, not the greatest of animations but quite pleased with how the compositing & lighting turned out!
Modelled, animated and rendered in Blender 2.81 cycles, texturing in Substance Painter, compositing in Blender 2.81 & After Effects CC.

It's diffuse lighting, footage was clearly taken on an overcast day. This generally gives the illusion of a "no shadows." environment. - I know subtle shadows that would still exist under the raptors aren't present in the render, but for the aforementioned reasons it's not as noticeable - and so arguably as necessary - as you may think.

There’s also a lot of revisions that get made in post that wouldn’t have been made back in 1993, for example changing the lighting or framing of a shot in post, which in my opinion usually results in less realistic looking shots. Back in 93 the framing and lighting they got in the day was baked into the film cells and they just had to fit the CG into it, not try to change the shot to fit the CG. I try to take that approach too but I don’t think I’m anywhere near the levels of the guys who worked on any of the films, including Jurassic World. Those guys are incredibly skilled artists.
@TomZonk
@TomZonk 4 года назад
@NEZ They're also compartmentalized, trashdog generalist don't get to work on Jurassic World. You need to assign specific roles to find the best of the best and get the best of the best result. Its why Blender idiots need to learn to choose that they want to do and go that route instead of thinking there's one guy at Framestore that does all the tracking, animating, modeling and EVERYTHING all by himself. That's for smaller studios.

Really great work here and elsewhere on your channel, and thanks for sharing this one. The thought that struck me about these guys - and of course I realize it's just proof-of-concept, so I'm just basically problem-solving for the fun of it - is that it eventually occurred to me that they didn't seem to have much 'weight,' that two potential improvements might be that when one takes a step, she sinks down a bit, but also, possibly more importantly, that her body does that little tiny crouch that happens when you shift your weight. I was shaking my head to myself when I had these thoughts, because it's so obvious that a tremendous amount of work went into this, which really does look great... I'm really not trying to be snarky, I just wound up observing to myself, once again, that modeling the real world is so damned tricky, and that, as with writing, so much of the work takes place in the iterations. Anyway, thanks for letting me blab. :) Cheers, and keep up the great work!

Great Job! Some constructive feedback: Be sure to match the depth of field and motion blur between backplate and CG element. Also, look into Light Bleeding in conjunction with 'edge blur'. In the case of 'edge blur', I cannot determine if you have none or too much in this comp, but there is some unnatural separation to the backplate. In regards to the leaves on the ground, use forces to blow the leaves, away from the raptures feet, air has more to do with kicking leaves around, than actual collision, also forces give much more predictable results. That said, it is really well done!

I think I have a suggestion to make the raptors feel more into the scene. I think you should add fake trees. The fake trees would act as shadow catchers, and can give the appearance of the tree shadows hitting the raptors. Also I think you should smooth the animation more in the head area, and make it so the heads don't keep looking left and right on the right one. One more thing, I think you should have the one on the left be on the right, because it's acting like it's the leader, and it should be a bigger focus. Otherwise, great CGI.

Hi! Great video! That is very impressive! I have never understood how to deal with raw footage and Color grading for 3D compositing. Do you match the lighting of the raptors in flat color profile? Because then I feel like it is a bit harder because of the desaturation and low contrast. And then are you exporting the video in raw to grade it with an other software or do you grade it with blender? I would love to understand it all You did a great job keep going! :)

Very nice. Ben, I bought your velociraptor model and it's great. I want to render in Eevee given its lightening speed. The raptor looks fine in Eevee (2.81) - except for the eyes which are opaque. I did rectify the problem in 2.8 by changing the blend mode from Opaque to Multiply - but the Multiply drop down is gone from 2.81 and now has to be configured via nodes. I don't know how to fix. Can you advise? I know the model was made in Cycles so perhaps the answer is to only use Cycles?
@BenJewer
@BenJewer 4 года назад
Many thanks! The model was designed before Eevee was even in Beta so it isn't immediately setup to work with it - you need to enable screen space reflections & refraction in the render settings, and then also enable screen space refraction in the material settings for the eye lens material. It also helps to reduce the refraction depth to 1-2cm. I haven't been able to get the eyes to look quite right in Eevee yet as the shadows don't work in the same way, so the eye ends up looking a little bright, but if you don't mind that then the render times are certainly very desirable!
@chrischisholm9220
@chrischisholm9220 4 года назад
Oh wow - a few clicks as per your advice and the eyes are back! Thanks so much! Yes, eyes perhaps on the bright side or more contrast required. Need to clearly see the black iris coming through which isn't happening at the moment - but this combined with shadows in Eevee - exciting! Thanks again.

He recorded the video in 4K RAW (sequence of raw images) that are flat in profile, similar to LOG video or a RAW image. The models have diffused/flat textures as well so as you can see in this video it very flat in profile before it was actually graded. Blender has a option for Filmic LOG under Color Management so when you export you can load it into Davinci Resolve and under the RAW tab you can choice to set it to sRGB while also having the flexibility of changing exposure, white balance, saturation ect..before adding a LUT.

Look again, they do. There’s very little direct light here because of the time of day and the sky being very overcast, so you end up with a soft AO effect rather than harsh shadows. They could possibly be more intense but there absolutely are shadows here.

@BenJewer
@BenJewer 4 года назад
I shot on the Canon C200, it’s the camera we use at work so I have access to it in my free time. Definitely not a budget friendly option if you’re a hobbyist or just starting out. If you have a bit of money to spend the Blackmagic pocket series will also get very nice quality footage for VFX work. Renting is also a good option if you’re working on a short film or something. I’m not a fan of the indoraptor design but definitely considering doing my own interpretation of that kind of creepy genetic hybrid design.
@cjkalandek996

@@BenJewer You say in your video you shot this in RAW and I know RAW can only be imported into DaVinci Resolve. So, I assume your process of rendering this was importing your footage to Resolve, exporting your RAW footage as ProRes without grading it, rendered your Raptors with the RAW color management system, comped your Raptors back into your original RAW footage in Resolve, and graded the whole thing there?
@BenJewer
@BenJewer 4 года назад
@@cjkalandek996 Close - but I use Premiere Pro, not Resolve. It handles Canon RAW fine. I exported to PNG sequence for motion tracking in Blender and then comped with the original raw file in After Effects. Neither Blender nor AE are particularly good at maintaining colour profiles so the colour matching was a little bit of a fudge job. Using the 'Filmic Log' profile in Blender gives the most latitude to work with in colour correction.

Blender (this channel) also has their own tutorial videos that help a lot if you already know the basics of 3d modelling and animating (for example Maya or 3DsMax). Make sure that if you are new, look for Blender 2.8 tutorials that aren't older than a couple of months since there's been a lot of changes to the program (new features that didn't exist or older ones that were redesigned). Older tutorials may confuse newcomers. Also don't be afraid to ask stuff in the comments :D Blender users are really helpful if they understand your question and if they know how to help.
