I am determined to create my dream cottage garden, I don't live in a cottage, my garden is a mess and my budget is close to zero but determination can get you a long way. Wish me luck!
I live in rural Northern Ireland with my kids, dogs, cats and chickens so the garden takes a beating regularly. I need to make a garden that is durable enough to withstand my family and hopefully grow some veggies if I'm lucky.
Also I am a complete amateur, I don't garden to produce or be perfect, I do it to relax and have fun so I will probably make a lot of mistakes just fyi.

Gardeners are generous people. If you see something you like in your neighbour’s gardens just ask!! I’d certainly give you a piece of a plant or 2 to help you fill your garden. We have to divide our perennials anyway. When I divide mine I place pieces in plastic bags or pots with a sign that says free. Never had to bring any back in yet haha.

@@pretendshoppingwithmelissaThis is true! I live in Southern Maryland near Washington DC and great climate for hydrangeas! I learned to prop and went nuts 3 years ago so now anytime someone comes to my home they MUST leave with a one year old plant. Same with foxglove... daisy, black eyed susan, cosmos, cleome, blanket flower, rose of sharon, hardy hibiscus and more! They seed all over .... n I have a dig it yourself corner for fellow gardners or when I need a plant for a pot!

Tips: If you buy plants, only buy perennials that come back every year. Then, in a couple of years, you can divide them and have more plants. Sometimes, I buy a 1 gallon perennial and immediately cut it in half to make 2 plants. I have also found abandoned plants at the local yard waste site. I rescued them and brought them home. People always want to get rid of hostas and daylilies! Take them. They're virtually maintenance-free.

I live in a block of flats, which has a skip bin a house away from mine. It never fails to amaze me what people will throw away!! And I get so much from what people leave by it ~ I've built a walk in chicken coop , attached chunnels and am currently building shelves and perches. The wood is free~there's a glass factory a 10min walk away, they throw out wood glass pallets ~5 metre long 2x1's which I collect weekly. The paint was free too, a la The Bin~near on 4litres of white exterior and about 5litres of Gray. I have no car. I have no power tools except the one between my ears 😂 but it's looking the job. All the plants I have in the garden I got for free , divided and replanted and now the garden is lush and filled. Free pavers ~120 of them, dug out and cleaned , stored on (you guessed it) free pallets. All power to you~You can do it!❤

Here’s an idea. Visit a garden centre and look around the plants for bits that have fallen off. Don’t break bits off because that’s stealing but bits that have naturally fallen off just pick them up and take them home and try rooting them at home. Not everything will take but some will and once they root they will grow. It may take a long time but it’s a free way of getting lots of lovely plants.

Hi Melissa! I live in central Illinois, USA and I’m a novice gardener as well. One thing I’m absolutely sure of is that even “master gardeners” have garden fails so just enjoy the hobby. If a plant doesn’t take well in a spot, move it to where it will. My advice is to learn about the plants you want to grow to make sure they will thrive in your garden based on three important factors; soil, light, water. I would also recommend starting your own plants if you can and sowing annual seeds in spring to fill up any bare areas! The little bed looks great!

I was a volunteer Master Gardener with our local extension here in East Tennessee, USA. I assure you that all “Master Gardener” means is that we are still learning to master gardening. I’ve got a small urban farm/large garden and gardening is always a learning curve-every single season. I love what Melissa is doing here. Thrifting and upcycling for garden decor and structures is a favorite pastime!

Thank you for sharing your gardening on a budget. I live in South Carolina, USA and am retired from teaching. I spend my time gardening and am on a budget. I get so many ideas from You-Tubers. There's one, Olga Carmody who lives in Connecticut, USA. She is originally from the Ukraine. She likes to make things from branches. She made an arbor and trellises, etc. I gathered branches from my yard and also others' brush piles near the street. I won't say that it was easy, but I'm still proud of how it turned out. You might try using branches for structures. Thanks again.

Your garden is really cute, brilliant obelisk idea with the butterflies. I know how that is being on a budget. Though I am not familiar with how it is in Norther Ireland...if U have time, sometimes area communities have "garden clubs" they r not all snobby, they have plant sales, sometimes exchanges. To save cash learning how to propagate perennials is a must. Also, I have painted "cheap" plastic pots with "concrete color paint" with by "pouncing rag or brush" to look like pottery, can be done. :D Wishing you many great garden plants. :D

A packet of wildflower seeds will be relatively cheap and they will also self seed so you would be able to fill your garden year after year. You can also buy fresh herb plants in the supermarket for about £1 and plant them in the borders for coverage and scent.

Well done. loved the obelisk idea. You can also make really cheap obelisks using big bamboo canes or long sticks and tying them at the top with string and putting some smaller sticks/canes across at right angles. once plants grow up them you don't see the supports. Try growing runner beans - they shoot up have big showy leaves, gorgeous hanging red flowers - and then a harvest at the end - and you don't just have to grow then in a "vegetable bed" ! Try researching potager gardens - where flowers and vegetables are all mixed together. Good luck. doing well so far.

Your dreams can totally come true. Gardeners are generous people, we love to talk about our gardens, and we can give you free advice! If you ask local gardeners if they can spare any cuttings, I’ve even seen people put out a sign that said “please share any cuttings you may have and it worked. Also, many cottage garden flowers will reseed and spread themselves. On RU-vid, the old BBC special, Geoff Hamilton’s Cottage Garden shows him creating cottage gardens: I learned a lot from that special! Good luck.

Cottage gardens have lots of annuals and perennials that you can buy as seeds ( lupine, foxgloves, delphiniums, nasturtiums etc ) and will self seed in the garden if you allow them to. So essentially you get flowers year after year. Also for woody plants like fuchsia take cuttings and propagate them. You could also ask neighbours if they are splitting plants that are too large to save a small clump for you.

add sunflowers. seed are cheap and you can get the small teddy bear ones that are short and fluffy looking. you can also succession plant them. You can get the tall ones too. They would look nice along your back fence. Then you save all your seed from them when they die back, and never have to buy sunflower seed again, year after year.

Gardens always tend to be more expensive than the budget of the gardener so you just keep at it. In the big tyre maybe look to plant a fruit tree, like a lemon or whatever grows well in your area. Or you could go an ornamental plum or similar so you get the spring blossoms.

If your mother has a flowerbed full of flower ask if when please share . That's how I got started on my flower bed ,it was just hostas but the bushes and trees . Peach ,paw paw, cherry bushes just from her seeds into the compost pile 2 and counting each year, elderberry Bush from one cutting it took 3 years but now it blooming. Black raspberry,thornless BlackBerry And now I have 7 areas with raspberries and one Area with both berries,2 rhubarb plants and now I have 2 areas 15 plants. One comfrey plant Into 20 and best natural fertilizer for all plants. I've only had too buy Apple,cherry,peach , and plum dwarf trees. I mix my strawberries with my flowers too have a ground cover of green and was blessed with a free bunch of 2' tall purple star bell flowers and a yellow flower with red centers. This fall I will transplant them Into flower bed. I bought asparagus 20 2 year old roots and 75 strawberry plants. The asparagus I still have a few plants and the strawberries are gone due too a neighbor spraying weed killer. Not bad for having strawberries for 23 years.

Just a thought from my side. Be careful of buying the discounted annuals. They are probably discounted because they are end of season. So in the end you pay more because it is not going to last long. So be aware of what is in season. Grow your own from seeds. Ask for cuttings and seeds from flowering plants in neighbours yards. I loved the obelisk!

Thank you ☺️ They grow all around my garden and house, we live in farm land so I’m not sure if it has something to do with that? But I did compost those guys don’t worry and last year I dehydrated some into herbs for cooking, stingy nettles too ☺️

I use an app called picture this, you take a picture of the plant and it tells you about it and it did say wild mustard but if things look similar it can get confused so I couldn’t say for sure 🤷‍♀️

The last you bought in the pink pot is a Bleeding Heart. 5hat will do very well in a garden environment planted directly in the ground. Over time it will fill out and spread but it's not considered invasive.Looking at your garden area, I thought Id to suggest take the area between the square garden with 3 trees and the hedge....you could extend the rounded brick lined garden area and include this other area. You could removed the sod or leave it and plant various varieties of Hostas and use a whipper snipper to maintain the area around the hostas. Hostas grow very well I poor soil and shade. Here in Canada where I am, they will grow just about anywhere and lots of folks will have them for cheap or give away. They make beautiful fillers for difficult areas and will increase in size each year so you can dig and divide them and make more garden areas. Why not turn your tire into a nice herb garden or plant rhubarb and strawberry plants jn it. Just a few ideas. Just found your channel and enjoyed your video very much. ( new subscriber) 😊

You live in a beautiful location. One way to fill your garden is to split plants that can be split or propagate bushes.

3:50 take cuttings from friends/family/neighbours/strangers gardens. Easy to fill a small bed for next to nowt. I'm trying to grow from seed but flowers are so slow & difficult. Loads of online seed shops with sales on now. I try to shop in the clearance section in garden centres. It's usually 2 quid a plant. I get perennials so I can then separate them in the autumn or following spring.

Came across your channel and had to investigate the accent, northern Ireland or Scottish. As I suspected , the north. Good idea to look for plants in super arkets where they sell them off cheap after being neglected. A drop of water and replant works wonders. Watching you water and you seem to over water ...

you can make cages with bamboo stakes and tie them together at the top. these work well for peas and beans, and end up being cheaper. if you have access to bamboo plants themselves you can cut and harvest your own bamboo and not have to even buy them. but usually bamboo stakes and poles are the least expensive.
@guineapigsarecute1118
@guineapigsarecute1118 17 дней назад
you can also grow sunflowers and beans together, so that the beans will grow up the sunflower

Thanks so much for all your tips! I am for sure going to try using bamboo. It’s tricky for me to grow from seeds, my chickens can’t resist but I am trying to figure out a way 🤔👌

@@pretendshoppingwithmelissa pound land has little metal waste paper baskets, you can turn them upside down over your seedlings to prevent the birds from getting at them. I used them to prevent my little groundhog "buddy", i named Batman, from eating my zucchini and sunflowers lol

Jakers you did well to get all that fence painted in 3 hours. Well done. I love the bleeding heart plant. If you haven't put that in the ground yet, do. It grows into a lovely big bush. We have clay soil here in Cavan (you probably have the same) and it didn't mind it one bit. I just mixed a bit of compost in and it flew. So easy to look after. The dog dug it up too many times thought and it eventually gave up the ghost. Sadly, the dog is now gone (r.i.p. Rusty Dawg, best golden lab ever). You reminded me though that I must get another one.

Get a hand saw and cut at least five inches from around the iinside rim of that huge tyre, top and bottom and you'll get a lot more plants in there. You can tidy the raw edge with rubber car trim.

I will enjoy watching you create this garden. It will be charming. I like your idea for decorating the obelisk. I will keep my eyes open for supplies to do that. One more free thing you can do is straighten your crooked pavers and garden bins. Re-make the screen covers so they fit better and stain the wood frames the same color as the bins.

Could you put herbs like rosemary and thyme in to the beds or put in mixed flower seeds for bees? Also the pound shop and Lidl and Aldi they have great cheap flowers. Also there's some great outdoor paints in The Range even small tubs or get some tester pots. Also you could look at charity shops for outdoor lanterns or buddhas or plant pots. Also Poundland have pots and good roses and seed packets. And aldi have good solar lights. Also you can half a tomato or onion and bury the tomato with the seeds or cut the onion and you can grow tomatoes or any veg from shop bought. You could spray the pots. Also if you buy lavender one year it could put it in year after year as it's hardy.

Love what you're doing in your garden, my advice to make a wonderful cottage garden is to target your efforts to make it more attainable, take note of where you see the most and focus there first and then over the years as plants grow larget (generally not shrubs), you can divide and propergate to get more free plants, which also adds some consistency through a large garden ❤️ Good luck and enjoy the process!

You’re doing a great job. Your garden is charming. A good way to get free plants is to ask neighbors and friends for cuttings. Geraniums add a ton of color and are very easy to start from cuttings. I don’t know your growing zone but they may need to be protected in winter. Also if you have Facebook group of gardeners in your area you can just ask for starts. Gardeners are a generous lot and love to share with newbies.
