Regarding the plastic, I use cardboard ( not the glossy kind) and cover with grass clippings or hay. Get boxes from the tip behind shops. Completely FREE. Also it will allow rain to penitrate the ground and it breaks down over the year and makes the soil richer.

I do this, it works great as a weed barrier. Cover it with mulch and nobody knows it's there.

Nettles and comfrey make good fertiliser you leave them soaking in water for a couple of weeks I think it is. I can’t remember the ratio to add to water but I’m sure the info would be easy to find online

I love how you’re using just a little money to make improvements to your cottage garden. I need the mature plants in my garden. We have bunnies, squirrels, above and below ground insects, birds and cats wondering in the garden and destroying the young plants. And mature plant can be very expensive. It’s so frustrating to plant stuff. You’re doing an amazing job.

You have a lovely garden & home! The progress you made is stunning. Thank you for sharing with us. As far as protecting seeds and seedlings I use plastic milk jugs or water bottles or jugs. But glass jars will work as well until they outgrow them. I don't have chickens but I do have chipmunks and other critters. They love to dig up and eat everything. I just keep reseeding. 🙂🌱

Thank you very much I appreciate that! ☺️🌸 I actually did try the milk jug idea a couple of weeks ago and it did work for the chickens but the dogs found them very fun to chew 🤦‍♀️ lol but I never thought to use glass jars that’s a great idea!!

The garden has filled out nicely. I very much like the way you saved the broken pot and made such a cute grouping of flowers. I think you should put a plan together to remake the gravel filled circle. Work from the inside out and it won't seem so daunting. I think you can do it!

I love what you are doing!! Cuttings are very easy to take, but be quick, the best season is late spring, early summer. Take the cuttings from the green tips. Typically, woody cuttings won't grow roots. Cut them right below a leaf nodule, about 3-4 inches long. Remove all but the last 2-3 leaves, and put in well draining soil or in water. I do mine on my kitchen window in water. That way, I remember to top up the water... Take online lessons with a pinch of salt. Trial and error is your best bet. I absolutely afore your bee happy wreath! It turned out fantastic! Greetings from (too) sunny Spain!!!

I think the problem with the vegetable seeds is the depth of the planters. They need more light to germinate. I ran into the same problem with my tower gardens because I didn't know I had to keep the tiers separate and in full sun until the seedlings were big enough to get light once the tiers were stacked. Live and learn. 😆 Getting the seeds to fully mature plants at this time of year really depends on the length of your growing season. Our growing season lasts until mid to late October, so most things will be fully harvestable before frost even now. By the way, the cleanup of the house walls is fantastic, and I love the swags and wreath you made!

I have an idea - before you fill out the second semicircle, is there a way you can keep the chickens out of that bit so you can start seeds and cuttings off in pots. Just thinking that you could use it as a nursery area as you can get good deals on seeds and plug plants sometimes that you could grow them there until they get big enough that the chicks aren't interested anymore. It would mean that you can get smaller (cheaper) plants or multipacks of perennials and let them grow on before you plant them out.
@pretendshoppingwithmelissa
@pretendshoppingwithmelissa 4 дня назад
Yes great idea! I am seriously considering fencing off a small area just for growing seeds. I tried plastic green houses last year but they couldn’t withstand our weather 🤦‍♀️☔️🌸

Hydrangeas are really easy to take cuttings from so you can get loads of plants from the ones you have. You could maybe try starting seeds off in pots before planting in the ground and hopefully the chickens won’t pull them up. Have just found your channel and am loving it already, can’t wait to see how the garden progresses. You’ve also given me some ideas to try 😁

The plastic greenery will turn blueish in the sun. They are OK for a non sunny area or for indoors. Don't be afraid of mint, just grow it in a container! I love your house and how creative you are being on a budget. This is a wonderful example for many young people! You may be able to ask neighbors for cuttings or rooted plants they are splitting such as Iris or Day Lily!! Free plants!

I have one of those tubular arbors. I tied mine to stakes (you can also put the bottom ends over rebar driven into the ground). Get some rust-stop paint to paint the whole thing. Mine's over 20 years old and I'm still using it in the veggie garden. If you pull a plant out of a pot and it looks like all roots, make sure you loosen the roots really well and spread them out in the planting hole so they don't keep growing in a circle.

@christine1373
@christine1373 6 дней назад
I love arches in gardens!! A solution to get your trellis more in the ground for stability is to wet the soil deeply then push the trellis without disturbing the soil too much. If your seeds are under the plastic they might not sprout. For you pumpkin obelisk plant the seeds towards the outside then start training the vines up them. If you want to save the flower pot from the dump there is a glue you can use to repair it. Your lupine is beautiful and the hydrangea as well!!

Hi I love your videos really good tips. I was just thinkingbif you can get a B&q store soon , now they are selling off a lot of perennials that don't look so great but with a bit of compost a pinch of tomato fertilizer in the bottom of the planting hole, they'll be great in a couple of weeks. Buy the fertilizer in a box in Lidl it's quite cheap. Just an idea for your circular bed hope it helps, best wishes from Dublin

The raise beds might need more soil to the top, so the sun can reach your seedlings. The side of the raised bed cast a shadow during much of the day. I too made this mistake this year in pots. I got one purple basil plant even though I put so many seeds in the pot. I hope that’s helps you in the raised beds.

@Terry-lh8cn
@Terry-lh8cn 5 дней назад
@beahallberg7822 It needs to be aged or it can burn plants, but it's a great free resource. The contents of the tire look like dirt, as opposed to soil. Soil is rich and alive, dirt, not so much. Pumpkins are heavy feeders so they'll need a boost. Might be some old horse or cow manure around that would work.
