Yes, please! More elementary lessons. Playing along with you was the first time I was able to play a tune instead of exercises. The pace is perfect for those of us totally new to reading music as well as the harp. Thank you for taking the time to put this great resource together. I'm off to pick up the sheet music so I can practice sight reading while practicing this. And... learning an instrument WAS a decision I made to cultivate neuroplasticity! :-)

On May 3,2021, at the young age of 71, yes 71, my husband made my childhood dream come true by presenting me with a Lyon&Healy Troubadour for my birthday.. I just discovered your site and while I am literally all thumbs, I enjoyed your gentleness and slow pace. I got as far as "banana" but I'm optimistic! Thank you! See you tomorrow, Ms. Crosby Gaudet.

Anne, I'm a beginner and learning how to read music at the same time. Offering different styles is just what I needed: Learning by rote, breaking it into sections... now I'm walking around the house humming BA-na-na! Please continue with beginners in mind.

LOL! I've had a number of students come to me singing "ba-na-na" and "a cup of coffee" when they play this one. I have a new beginner level video in the works.

After watching this lesson, I think I can do this. I have had my harp for several months but not started lessons; I’ve made no attempt to try. I had listened to a harpist whom I couldn’t follow. That drained my confidence. Thanks for this lesson, though I only viewed it without giving it a try, yet.

This was my first successful song, and I can still play it 5 years later! “A cup of coffee” “ banana” and now I automatically make up phrases to help assist my memory! I love you, your style of teaching, and just wanted to say this is a fun song to learn and gets us through the first to 3rd version quickly! Thumb slides, step up and step downs are my go to’s. Just For You… and me.

Hi Anne 😊 thank you for this piece, I love it and I downloaded it to start with you on it. 🤍I’ve only been playing for 2 weeks since I got my harp, so this was probably too advanced for me, but I was able to keep up with section A. I’m good with using my ear for notes and can read the treble clef, but the base not so much - and then putting them together, eek! 😬😬😬 I have a hard time reading both lines at the same time and then finding the fingering in time, I lose my place a lot - it’s frustrating. I very much enjoyed your lesson, thank you so much for sharing your gifts 😊🤍

Anne, You have a lovely way to communicate to your audience. You make the harp seem so accessible. As a composer of harp music, I have tried to write pieces that are easy to learn but that sound much harder than they are to play, and so I particularly like your approach of making things understandable and relatable. So glad you are out there helping people learn to play the harp!

Well, I've gone through the whole piece, albeit clumsy in some parts. I won't move onward until I can play the piece with ease. I'll be in California for 3 weeks, visiting family that are all vaxed (yea!), so I will have to review when I come back, but that's okay as I love this piece of music. It is so sweet. Our printer went to where dead printers go; thus, I haven't printed out your music. But my husband promises me there will be a new printer upon my return. So, Ms. Crosby Gaudet, I'll see you upon my return. And thank you!

Keep them coming if you can...I'd really love it if you could create a comprehensive course of video lessons at least for the first level of harp. I love to learn with sheet music but I also love the benefits of learning by ear because then I remember the piece forever. If I learn by reading the sheet music, I totally forget the song unless it's written in front of me!

Hi Anne. I have just discovered your youtube harp lessons and I am amazed and sooo grateful. They are so clear - the videos/visuals, instructions , fingering and pace with such gentle and yet confidence building authority. Also the technique special lessons and the play- alongs are very helpful to consolidate the knowledge you so graciously give out. Growing up I had piano lessons and have dabbled in guitar and violin but felt a failure that I never persisted. Three years ago I bought an incredibly beautiful Dusty Strings (34) harp and basically looked at it until a few months ago. Slowly I feel I am at last forming a 'relationship' with my harp and together I have stopped just wishing i could play, and have started enjoying the actual process. Your style, personality and actual lessons are the best i have found on youtube and the simplicity of your compositions and suitability for adult learners is key. I am now 73 and feel there is hope:)) THANKYOU SO MUCH. Lara

Waow ! Hello, I'm totally new to learning the harp (I have just signed in a music school and my first lesson is next monday - can't wait !) I have watched your video and even if I don't have a harp yet I have been "air playing" with my fingers, just to get used to moving them in the right order, closing after each note and so on. Adding words on notes helps so much ! I think I will keep that tip for my further learning. Thank you very much for your inspiring pedagogy, I'll also remember "8 repetitions". Looking at this lesson makes me feel more confident ! You rock 🤘😀

I‘m not a harp teacher but a passionate harp player so I’m glad that more people are getting interested in playing the harp. If you want to buy a harp there are countless opportunities and resources but if you end up with your dream harp it was worth the effort. When starting something new, doing thorough research is crucial. Harps are quite expensive so you don’t want to waste money on a harp that you you’re not gonna play because you don’t like it. There are many RU-vid videos that explain the differences between harps and recommended reputable manufacturers. I would recommend watching some of them. Most videos are made by harpists or harp teachers who have a fair bit of experience. If you live close to a city that has a music or even dedicated harp store you can also go there and try a few different models. You can try to get in touch with harpists in your area, most harp players are really passionate about sharing their love for this amazing instrument and some might allow you to visit and test their harp. It’s also good to know what kind of music you want to play in the future. Do you want to play classical music or even buy a grand concert harp? Do you want to play jazz, folk music, Irish music or a mix? This will also influence your harp choice even though it’s possible to switch to a different harp later that suits your music style. For classical music you might look at a harp with high string tension and gut strings while for folk and Irish music the preferred string tension is usually lower because the music is played fast. There are many reputable brands that distribute their harps across the globe. Camac, Salvi, Aoyama, Lyon and Healy, Triplet and Dusty Strings are only some of these well-known brands. Each brand has their own pros and cons in my opinion and each harpist has their own favourite brand, so there is no „best“ harp on the market. There are also lots of smaller independent harp makers, some of them offer „build your own harp“ workshops. It’s worth considering their harps as well. Please stay away from so-called „Pakistan harps“! They are often offered on ebay and other online market places for a very cheap price but what you get is what you paid for. These harps are often poorly made and rather a toy than an instrument you will enjoy playing for a long time. Also the wood is offen not responsibility sourced. It’s definitely worth saving money to buy a good quality instrument from as trustworthy manufacturer rather than wasting money on a bad harp. My favourite brand, and this is only my opinion, is Camac because they make beautiful Celtic harps that suit my needs and style of music. They have showrooms in many countries, so it’s easy to go there and pick the harp you like. The pricing is very reasonable for a good quality instrument. I started my harp journey on a Camac Celtic Isolde but I found the string tension too low for a beginner and I wasn’t paying proper attention to developing good techniques. Now I’m playing a Camac Excalibur which has a good string tension and is extremely versatile. Unfortunately this harp is a bit expensive, I think the most popular Camac harps for beginners are Hermine and Telen. Salvi also offers a broad range of beginner harps that are designed with students in mind. I love that you can customise your harp and choose between a great variety of colours but I feel that Salvi beginner harps are made as „starter“ instruments only and their concert harps are much better than their lever harps. Dusty Strings also make beautiful harps (as you can see in this lovely video) with a rich sound. I have never played a Dusty Strings harp myself but I’m only hearing positive comments. Regarding the price, it really depends on where you live in the world. As I said, Camac is reasonably priced for delivering outstanding quality and when I lived in Europe they were really affordable… but here in Australia they’re super expensive because I have to add shipping and import fees to the actual price. If you’re in the US, Dusty Strings or Triplet or a harp from a harp makers might be the best option… If you’re serious about playing the harp do some research, talk to harpists and, if possible, visit a harp store or a harpist nearby who can provide some guidance. Good luck on your journey!!!!

Thank you for this lesson! I'm a violin teacher, but an adult beginner on harp. I do prefer learning from written music, but very much enjoyed the challenge of learning the A-section this way. I would certainly be interested in trying this approach more often. I did download the music this morning and look forward to learning the rest of the piece, the level 3 version. Thank you for so many beginner level arrangements. When I was getting frustrated with the more difficult arrangements my teacher was working on with me, she encouraged me to learn and memorize First Snow. It was so rewarding to be able to play something so beautiful, yet so relaxing to play. These beginning pieces you write help me to have real music to play and enjoy within my current ability, while I continue to struggle through adding new skills and more difficult pieces. They help me to stay in touch with why I began this harp journey in the first place: to share beautiful music. Someday, I hope to be able to play your more challenging arrangements as well.

As a 65 yo learning to play harp, this is wonderful! Just the right amount of repeating (8 times is easy to do for a quick touch of strings) Please keep going with these lessons. Thumb slides and all! I prefer to learn as this video demonstrates - I might have liked a zoom into your fingers the thumb slide-I mistakenly thought it was finger #2 and not thumb. I do not play harp, but I really enjoyed your lesson. I like your explanations of finger placement and closing the fingers, thumb slides, etc. Very good English phrases for timing. Great integration of three levels of playing. So I guess that now I am a vicarious harp player. The harp sound has always attracted me. But I play so many instruments, that I do not want to dilute my dedication to my current instruments. You have planted a seed for a potential harp in my future. I am not satisfied with the tone of a lap harp, so I guess that I will have to wait until I have the time in my life to invest in a more serious instrument. Out of curiosity, I also listened to some theramin lessons, but they did not appeal to me ;-)

@@annecrosbygaudetmusic Thank you Anne. I'm sure I will. I purchased the piece earlier on tonight. My adult son said he liked the Level 1 with the easy to understand alpha notes. He started learning violin a few years ago but after an operation found he can't play it now. He is a kidney transplantee and when he was on dialysis they put a tube in which runs from inside his elbow, up over his collarbone and stops just before the heart (known as a Herograph). Of course, it is exactly where his violin sat so caused him considerable discomfort. He might try this on the 22 string harp - if I can tune it as the soundboard is cracked. It does tend to hold the tune well though, unlike my new harp which keeps going sharp 🙄 I've only had the new harp for just over 2 weeks so I'm hoping it settles down.

I really like this style of teaching for an adult beginner like me. I do have a suggestion however: notice how slow you start the beginning of the lesson. This is perfect as I need to memorize (1) the shapes (2) the cadence (i.e.: Banana) (3) the actual notes/strings relative to the previous phrase (4) whatever new technique introduced in that particular phrase (i.e.: thumb sliding) By the end of the video the teaching speed has become substantially faster than at the beginning, whereas I am still learning at the same (slow) speed. By minute 24, I am now overwhelmed by the teaching speed and can’t keep up anymore. Hence my suggestion: please keep the same teaching speed throughout. Thank you.
