You should pick up some of those fallen apples and scatter them on other public land, same with the figs. This will insure a future supply for others and yourself.
Here’s a tip from an old Apple picker from Australia. When you pick an Apple lift and twist otherwise you are taking next years fruit off With the Apple and leave the stalk in the Apple will keep a lot longer. I enjoy watching you channel, I love Rocky too.
Oh man..... Letting stuff like that go to waste is literally CRIMINAL. When I was a kid back in NW Florida, I found an old area as big as two football fields where some houses had been demolished years before-- I don't know why, the foundations were still there but nobody had ever built on the location and there were tons of blackberry bushes and HUGE pecan trees everywhere. I literally brought home bushels of pecans and many pounds of blackberries; I even earned quite a chunk of extra cash picking berries for neighbors to use. These days I live in SE Arizona, and there's still tons and tons of stuff to forage even out here in the Sonoran Desert; people just don't *look!*
What a great find!! Sheesh!! By reading some of these comments, I see that you sure DO have some negative Nellies. Good for you on collecting this food. It is NOT stealing and would certainly just go to waste. Why NOT feed someone with it rather than have it rot on the vine or ground. I truly do not understand the negative vibe it generated. Best wishes to you.
Prepper Princess be careful picking up wood. I have found baby copperheads inside and under wood (Texas). Your show is great by the way. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!!
Absolutely a great find! I'd make sure to go back and stuck up on apples, figs and grapes. Makes great applesauce, fig and grape jelly, dried figs, grapes and dried apples, you can freeze the grapes and use them in your smoothies etc. I'm sure you will find all kinds of frugal ways to incorporate them into your daily menu. And your chickens will love you for the scraps.
I found 40 pounds of chanterelle mushrooms at my local park! I filled two huge baskets. People were looking at me like I straight lost my mind. It was awesome.
Make fun of you? Just laugh at them all the way to the bank! You found a little gold mine. Wish I had one near me. You are a survivor and will always be able to take care of yourself. Keep up the good work!
Wow I love your videos today especially what a great haul that's what l hear other people say lol.you are a blessing to me my friend thank you for sharing your life and your videos and Rocky 🕊️❤️🙏
We have found that often times if you ask, people will let you harvest their fruit trees if you share what you pick with them. We have found apples and pears in yards, and all we had to do was ask and give a few small baskets to the home owner.
California might be deemed a death trap by many of us but I sure envy the fruits and nuts you guys have. Avocados are my favourite thing in the entire world. Rocky is a fine looking boy. He'll learn. he's just excited
really? How many wild tomato plants have you seen? Your a regular smart ass aren't you... Yeah free food every where! That's why there are starving children all over this planet. Walk through the woods, very little food. your a waste of brain cells...
@@nasanction hahaha how ridiculous and envious you are. The nature grows by itself... Everywhere on planet there are tons of plants we can eat, growing alone! There's much more life beyond the farmers and the human hand...
@@Edith.G.G. I suggest you go try and live off the land. Not FARM LAND! Try living off the wild. Then imagine 8 Billion people doing the same. The food would be gone fast. But the point of all this is the food she was taking, was grown by someone. Taking it without permission is stealing.
Great find, you should get Rocky a pack so you can bring more home. It doesn't look like anyone else is foraging there and in a way thats sad but your gain.
As a former Midwestern farmer who used to have apple trees, I have to pass along a bit of information. The apples look okay -- except since they are on public land, they have not been sprayed. I noticed a couple of "dimples" on them indicative that they will likely be wormy. Sure, they are totally organic, and thats great, but few people appreciate taking a bite out of an apple to see half a worm staring back at you. The best way to use these will be to cut/slice them up and cut out the wormy parts before you eat them. Freeze them or make applesauce out of them. Here is a good bulletin/pictures from Michigan State extension office with some information about apple diseases. msue.anr.msu.edu/news/look_a_like_late_season_apple_damage
I'm just being humorous here, but if you bite into an apple, I doubt there will be half a worm "staring back at you." More likely, the eyes of the worm are probably in your mouth staring at your teeth. LOL Unless you bit off its rear end...and I'm not going to make any commentary about that. haha
That is awesome! You sound so HAPPY and excited about your find. I need to start looking around my area. There use to be so many orchards. If you get buggy apples, you can cut off that part and use the rest.
Lol people that have something to say negative about you getting free fruit, firewood etc. just jealous. All you can do is laugh at it. Gary will love all the free goodies. BTW great to see you back on too.
I am new to your channel, and have been feverishly trying to watch all the videos! I want all the knowledge!!! I am a single mom who wants to know how to be more prepared for anything, and how to secure a good future for myself. Thank you for your wisdom - keep posting!
I made a lot of applesauce, pear sauce, apple and pear butter. Cut around the bad spots and cook down. Just water bath can. They have no spray on them. I was thrilled! Good for you, love your videos.
This was a fun video to watch. Good for you picking free apples and for getting cash for glass bottles. I also like that using an electric blanket enables you to not use your heater. I admire your penny pincher ways. ( :
I do that too. By the time i get in, it's nice and warm. I usually turn it off and pile 2 blaknets . I'm not cold unti i clime out of bed. I also get a blankt with dual controls. It saves money because i keep mine cooler. Sleeping with wool socks on will REALLY keep you warm at night. Alsio if you don't have a heated blanket, place a heating pad over your stomach, you will be warm before it shuts off.
Mmm... apple crumble... Those green apples look like what we here in Australia call Granny Smith apples?! They are slightly tart, & perfect for either cooking or eating as a snack with cheese... Congrats on your haul! Fresh fruit that hasn't been in a shed for weeks or months. Much healthier... You're inspiring me to try some foraging myself! 💚
Cool!... Fun fact - Granny Smith apples were "invented" in Australia... As Wikipedia says: "The 'Granny Smith' is a tip-bearing apple cultivar, which originated in Australia in 1868.[1] It is named after Maria Ann Smith, who propagated the cultivar from a chance seedling." :)
Good finds, I would also be excited. Walking with the pup is relaxing, is exercise, good for the dog, and you come home with goodies. I live in an area with great rocks...so when Im out with my pups, I search for flat ones for walking paths in my yard, pretty ones for flower bed borders and smaller sparkly ones for stepping stones. I also have my "favorite" pine trees for needles which I use for tea, I harvest wild greens and sumac berries. Much better than the mall...
I don't know why anyone would make fun of you. Your a very intelligent woman. If I could pick apples for free I definitely would. Keep up the GREAT JOB and PLEASE say Hi to Rocky from little Toby.
I've been foraging for fruits this year because most of fruit trees were frosted out. I've had a life changing time the last few weeks. So I've been having to walk everywhere I go. And I was so lucky to find whole chickens for $.89 lb. I bought 4 for the winter pantry. And a mix of my garden produce has made it so easy to prep . Yes Canadian preper showed me how to make a Swedish torch to conserve my wood supplies. I use and old stroller for grocery shopping and walking my dog. And another friend gifted a double chiefs carrier for bike. And it will have dual purposes groceries & pet carrier. And thank you for sending me homestead tessies site. I've learned so much from you both. Happy anniversary it's been 1 year of make good use of all resources all year long. I go to your site for meals& bills & homestead tessies for canning& meals. God bless you both for sharing your tips. This year I have to find a gas vaulve for my old furnace before winter. Or put in a wood burning stove.
Just passing through and I thought wow! Figs! One of my favorite fruits. If you have a fruit cellar apples store nicely. A food dehydrator is a good investment, the Excalibur 9 tray make the most of dehydrating. You can dehydrate apple slices brushed with a bit of lemon or lime juice make the best snacks as do bananas, pineapple and so much more. Once dehydrated they last a long time. Figs dry nicely too! We foraged 1,000 of years ago, there is no shame in it. Grape vine leaves, wild like that have no preservatives and can be stuffed like you would a cabbage roll. You can also preserve them. Purslane is an edible weed that is nutritious and available for about 2 months of the year. You must live in a tropical climate to have figs growing. Great foraging!
The Pervy Prepper Yes Dolmades! Thats what the Greeks call them, in my culture we call them Sarma. Each Culture has their own name for stuffed vegetables of all kind. My favorite is Cabbage Rolls made with fermented Cabbage. What is your favorite?
I really appreciate your videos and your perspective. You are very smart and resourceful! I am not a prepper but your channel gave me lots to think about. Those apples would certainly go to waste if no one picked them, so I don't understand the negativity towards you. So silly.
Ugh, just seeing this as fresh snow is falling down! It'll be a while before I can do this. Hopefully, I can find a great spot like you did. Keep on going with your foraging, at least you'll know where to get food if there's ever a disaster in this country!
Every year we go to a state campground in Rhode Island. It is loaded with concord grapes for the taking - the staff says take as many as you can! We bring lots home and make grape juice and jelly.
some towns have been planting such food trails (as i call them) for the homeless population so they dont raid peoples gardens, but the whole public is allowed to enjoy them. good find and enjoy.
You should thank Johnny Appleseed for planting that tree and many others throughout the USA I read that he planted them everywhere through out the States in public areas - he was religious and felt that everyone should have the food to eat - he also helped people learn how to grow apples and helped them to make cider from their apples
I love foraging, I do it on my free time, I don't live in the desert, but I currently live in a four season area with a virgina/Ohio/ Maryland type climate. I have secret gardens made from wild growing plants like wild onions and violet leaves, (I have no land of my own yet this year but will) I grow it under the space under electric line poles which is public property. No one knows it's food so no one takes it. It's small rn but I hope to grow it. I like adding it to brown rice and things like that. Fun tidbit you probably already know, but frying grape leaves in a pan is a crunchy delicious sour treat
Can't imagine people making fun of you. This is being resourceful, and as anyone can see, if you or others don't pick them, they fall to the ground and rot. And you're not depriving birds of the fruit as there is plenty in the upper branches. I don't have walking places like this where I live, but I would do the same exact thing as you. Happy for you! : )
I don't know why people would make fun of you or anyone else for finding free food or items. It's smart!! Some people just think that the newest is best. Not me! I love a good find weather it be food or clothing or something I can use in my house. Heck most of my belongings are repurposed. You keep doing you.
I forage in Texas all the time ... I have my regular seasonal spots great find. You can ask people for theirs as well so many people just let stuff rot.
Put the word out for someone who has a dehydrator. You pick, prep, and dehydrate, the owner gets 1/4 and you get a years worth of dried apples to eat, make applesauce, and give as LOVELY gifts.
The only caveat to your story is that the vast majority of people don't live in places where you can find a great deal of food growing wild on public lands. That's not to say that people can't plant some apple trees and maybe a pear or peach tree, but for most people that's not going to be an option. Good video though!
I found a ton of fruit laden trees at a lesser used public park. Went picking with my mom and daughter. Soooo many apples BUT they were the most sour, mouth puckering crab apples I’ve ever eaten. I had no idea what to do with them. If anyone can give me some recipes for them, I hate to see them just rot every year.
I love forging for free apples, pears and anything else I can find. I would strip those apples trees and can them. Keep in mind those people who make fun of you for doing it, are paying full price for them at the grocery store. Normally those people are the very same ones if they were hit with a $500.00 emergency they wouldn't be able to come up with the money. I love what you do...........Keep Posting Your an Inspiration!!!
What an amazing blessing. Why would someone make fun of you for foraging what may have gone to waste? The day will most assuredly come when those people may wish they knew where free & healthy food sources can be found !
I am soooo jealous! I love figs! Rocky is Adorable! Also could you do me a favor? Could you encourage PureD to either set up PayPal account or let us know how we can support him Abit financially? Thanks! Is PureD also in California?
How do you know where someone's property ends? I have seen several apple trees near me, but I'm not sure if they are on the land next to the house, or the land that looks to me like it's publicly owned.
