There just isn't currently anybody that has the sound, the range, the 'cleanliness' of the Boss Brass. They sound so dynamic! Bet they would have been good live...

Living in Toronto, I got to hear them live quite a few times. The band was as terrific live as you can possibly imagine. Also, Rob was an extraordinary stand-up comedian. His between tunes 'riffing' was always worth the price of admission alone. he was a tremendous unique talent who was admired and given many accolades here in Canada and in the US. But it was always a tough go to run a band. He said once in a clinic I went to that he had had the Boss Brass for 10 years before he, personally, made a dollar. !!!!!!

Big Phat Band is today's Boss Brass. Cleanest most versatile big band out there (in the world of studio big bands).

Thanks for posting this. As an ex jazz trombone player I have always loved the 'Rob's charts and the bone' section never ceases to amaze me. To me the Boss Brass is the greatest big band of all time and, although I miss the big man now he's no longer with us I'm just grateful for the marvellous legacy he left us.

Peter Smith I agree with you re" best damm band ever" ...I was a session musicians for 35 years .....played with a couple of great bands ( Johnny Richards). But while I was living in Toronto I came to be close to Rob and the band . There is a big band Germany . peter Herbolzheimer & his Rhythm Combination & Brass band ( a mouthfull) which sounds amazingly like the BB. They have some great soloist (Til Bronner played with them for awhile).....I urge you to check them out..you will not be disappointed!!

The version I remember was live, I recorded it on cassette and memorized every nuance of the solos. This was 1984. And this studio version as incredible as it is, doesn’t match the intensity of the other live version.

This is a COMPLETELY different version than my original Umbrella Direct to Disc pressing (which still sounds great)! Until hearing this, I didn't realize there were other versions of that classic release. Totally different solos from Rob and Sam is what confirmed it. You probably didn't know either.. Must have something to do with the direct to disc thing - maybe they could only press a certain number and then had to record again. CRAZY!!!

I noticed that cfergmusic1 made that comment 4 months ago, so others have noticed as well. My Umbrella original has the catalog # UMB-DD4. Yours?

Also, just wanted to point out that your personnel roster excludes Sam Noto (who is the trumpet soloist on this track (in both known versions/takes)

I bought that Umbrella Direct Cut LP in 1978...cost me £14. BUT.....probably the best double LP I ever bought and I had a stereo system to boot.....Celestion Ditton 44 speakers Luxman L31 amp and Technics SL-1200 deck with Shure V15 Mk 3 cartridge. My late father was amazed that a music system could sound so good. He loved this band with all his heart. Great music and brilliant arrangements. Wow...bring back 1978! Gershwin's music is also interprereted on that double LP too.....RIP Rob

I have both the D to D and the CD, and while the cover art is the same, they are different. It sounds to me like the CD, which is just fine but somehow less memorable, was the rehearsal and the D to D was the official performance.

Just to clarify a couple of the particulars for this album... It was recorded and originally released in 1978 on Umbrella Records (in Canada). The recording was done 'direct to disc' at Jack Richardson's Nimbus 9 Studio in Toronto. The initial run of records were pressed from the master lacquers that were created live - no overdubs or edits (I've still got my well worn copy). Subsequent pressings were taken from a safety tape that was created in parallel with the lacquers.

Hi Mark... you’re a champion! Thanks so much for your post. I’ve made changes to the description, something I should have done when I first uploaded the track. Keep swingin’ brother, I love your work... Roy

I played trombone in my youth. Now I know why I gave up. I wasn’t very good and that 1st trombone part is impossible! (except for the very best like Ian McDougall). I love Rob and the BB btw way; own every record/Cd from “The Jazz Album” forward.

Too bad there aren't any 'real' sample libraries that us composers can use to write big band 'stuff'. Everything out there still sounds horrible! Where's Hoyt Curtin when you need him? Anyway, love Rob McConnell's music.

Best big band library I've found is Broadway Big Band, and I've tried a few. But there really isn't anything that's 'there' yet.
