Him and Private Eye are the few journalists left who can be bothered to dig up an actual story. The rest of the media are too obsessed with whether Kate likes Meaghan or some other celeb gossip that's easy to print. Who do you blame most, the people that consume the gossip media or the hacks that feed it? I first heard the PO scandal on an episode of HIGNFY in 2020? so years late, I immediately subscribed to Private Eye.
Private Eye is one of the most sued publications in Britain. Private Eye also has one of the highest success rates at defeating the lawsuits against it. That right there should tell you they are hitting a nerve and often they are doing that by saying uncomfortable truths.
Ian Hislops approach to politicians is exactly the way any journalist with integrity should approach a politician. If they did, the west wouldn't be awash with populist nonsense right now.
Populist? Like appealing to what is popular, well good thing we don't live in a democracy in the UK, we must absolutely govern on what is not popular, especially in a democracy.
@@56postoffice I am well aware of what he intends to mean, he means that they are not very good, intelligent people. You mention the word fascist (if you could spell it correctly) - Could you define Fascist for me?
No he is a great advocate against it, Ian Hislop is nothing but a contemptuous, loudmouth and overbearing little man who should not be allowed on TV and radio and his awful rag of a paper should be stricken from the shelves.
@@elizabethyoung3029 The Iraq War? Going into conflict knowing full well there was shaky intelligence at best and engaging in a moralistic pandering which if you understand history would never have turned out; particularly in that region mind you. The Middle East has never had a thirst for democratic government.
Ian is a real national hero and a great example of what a real role model is. Society would be considerably improved if we had more people like Ian Hislop.
Totally agree. However, I think a lot of this comments section are going to be in for a shock when they realise that he'll be as combative vs a Labour government.
@@andytc4840And so he should. Holding people to account and seeking people to take responsibility for their actions should be one of the biggest drivers in wanting to do better.
I really hate it when mp's say their staff work really hard, as if they think that nobody else does! If you work for a local authority, youre not allowed to accept even a box of chocolates as a thank you, why should it be more lax for people in positions of power??!
Especially when they combine that with them trying to reason that they did not accept a gift by saying they didn't personally use it. They did accept it in order to pass it on.
As a leftist, I'm not sure Ian would be 100% with me on everything, I get mixed vibes from him, but there's a solid "no BS" core to his personality and a courage to stand (often legally) against BS in all its forms, and its so rare. He's a real treasure.
Fully agreed, comrade. He still supports what I think to be awful institutions (eg monarchy), but at least he's a straight talker, and does seem to actually care about others. He is great.
If everyone had the moral compass of Hislop, then Liberalism would be a much more fruitful political system. Everyone doesn't though, and hence Socialism is the best alternative 🟥
Priti Patel's declaration on national TV that she wouldn't care if innocent people were erroneously killed under a UK capital punishment regime is one of my earliest "political memories" and has been forever burnt into my memory. Even before her vile performance during the Brexit campaign and her reign of terror as Home Secretary, I couldn't look at her without feelings of pure disgust. Fitting that she's now a Dame...
I'd suggest that Pritti Patel should watch 10 Rillington Place, but having watched how pig-headed and stubborn she is in regard to capital punishmennt, it would probably make no difference.
Priti and Suella are national treasures, they are both strong and determined politicians with great policies any of those 3 would make outstanding Prime Minsters.
Ian is the man who isn't afraid of bullying MPs and peers. Ian treats all politicians with equal contempt, and so do I. That is a fair and balanced way to treat these publicly funded arseholes.
I doubt Ian holds all politicians with contempt. To do so would be shameful. I believe he holds contemptible politicians to account. He has spoken previously about believing most people in politics are fundamentally moral people motivated to make the world better as they genuinely see it. What he can't stand are those who wield power without responsibility.
I've admired this man for many years. He has more integrity and backbone than the vast majority of MP's put together. I wish he would put a party together, he'd win by a landslide.
Sadly, I don't think he would. As Trump and Boris both proved, and inspired in a wave of right wing governments across the world, identity politics convince a lot of stupid people. They give people who feel victimised someone to blame, someone to fear, and then say they'll tak away that fear. "Mexicans are taking your jobs, we'll build a wall." "Foreign labour is pushing down wages and crippling social services , so we'll stop the boats." Common sense, honest, straight talkers like Iain get buried under the hateful imflammatory rhetoric.
Thank goodness for Ian Hislop! Private Eye expose the stench of corruption in the authorities! The Post Office Scandal was featured in 2010 by Private Eye! The MPs expenses exposed the obscene greed of MPs! All the greedy Covid contracts ie Michelle Mone and others! The cash for honours disgrace aswell! The greed land corruption is everywhere in the UK! The ghastly SNP where vast sums went missing by Nicola Sturgeon and her cronies! The UK government is quick to point the finger of corruption at other countries!
You know I had forgotten 'Michael Green'/'Corinne Stockheath'/'Sebastian Fox'/Grant Shapps week long period as Home Secretary as everything was falling apart for Truss. God this country is a mess. (For those confused by the multiple names, Grant Shapps infamously '''allegedly''' took on multiple 'second jobs'/'scam jobs' while he was an MP in parliament and used pseudonym names to get around parliamentary rules. Its something he continues to deny to this but there is ample evidence on the internet to prove he was indeed those people. Also there is a hilarious video of him being chased down by a journalist and struggling to escape from him while completely ignoring said questions.)
I'm actually really worried about the day when Ian Hislop finally calls it a day because he's one of the very few remaining shining lights of proper journalism that holds people in power to account there is.
The reason Ian Hislop is so great, is that he really doesn’t care if he ever gets invited back on these shows again; he’s not trying to sell anything, or be Mr. Popular, and that frees him up to say what he really feels, and unequivocally point out when politicians, journalists, presenters etc, are lying, or just being thick as mince. If more journalists didn’t care about access, & were willing to be unpopular, in their search for the truth, it would make it a lot harder for politicians to get away with being such corrupt, lying arseholes; it’s because of the sycophantic client journalists, who avoid asking the difficult questions because they enjoy hobnobbing with the rich and powerful, that allow politicians to do basically whatever they want, and be pretty sure that they’ll probably get away with it. If the majority of journalists were more like Ian Hislop is here in these clips, we might have a functioning press that actually works on behalf of the people…if only.
He is there to promote & sell PE. He takes 2k a week from the beeb. Outrageous sum of money for 2 hours work. If he just sat there, like a voiceless no opinion BBC journalist, he would not get the viewers, so would not get the gig. I'm sure he carefully calculates how far to push it, to still keep the BBC money truck rolling in.
@@SorendeSelbyBowen Hislop only says that because he's completely unbiased. If Kier Starmer effs-up, Hislop will tell you. If (as is more likely) Rishi Sunak makes an arse of himself, Hislop will tell you. If the King says something [else] stupid, Hislop will tell you.
@@cefngwyndon't hear him condemn Blair, pm when horizon was introduced and prosecutions started in 1999. Dint hear him condemn crozier , ceo of the po from 2003 till 2010! Don't hear him condemn starmer head of the cpsvwhen they prosecuted some sub post masters. Yes completely unbiased lol.
The USA have capital punishment in a number of states, yet how many mass shootings happen. Its not a deterrent and miscarriages of justice do happen in the UK.
Yeah, just your average privately educated graduate of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst who joined the Army as an officer. A real “man of the people”.
unfortunately our free press has many influencers with vested interests. True, we don't (appear to) have outright censorship, but the proprietors certainly have influence. The Murdoch group in particular has done a very great deal to manipulate a particular section of the populace to assist their views (and wallets), but it is not limited to them.
Yes, but..... Private Eye is a minuscule publication with a very limited reach. It's great that it exists, but it also shines a light on the absolute pathetic nature of what passes for a "free press" in the UK. The glory days of investigative journalism are long gone; the press is part of the problem now rather than part of the solution.
A revolving door between politics and media. They are each other best men and bridesmaids and godparents to each others kids. Complete and utter conflict of interest.
The day Ian Hislop retires is a bad bad day for this country. He's served this country via the Private Eye and have I got news for you for decades, longer than most MP's work for, and he's still going.
Ian is a national hero, deep admiration for his tenacity and honour in consistently challenging the injustice and deception that has taken hold in our governments, regardless of political persuasion. On the days I feel ashamed and depressed to be British, Ian always restores my faith
It's a shame that 'journalists' these days are afraid to ask the tough questions or to think for themselves. Ian's a shining example of actually listening to what's being said and forming a constructive opinion on that. You see the (lack of) thought process going through younger journalists' heads when someone says anything, they barely acknowledge what has been said, even if it's something worth pushing further on, they're only interested in reading through their pre-determined questions and getting out of there. Be more like Ian, please
Has he reached the status yet of National Treasure? He came to our studio once to record a voice over. He was a really nice and polite guy. He had turned up on the wrong day so we had to do some shuffling but he was really humble and apologetic. Really good to see.
Oh no! Don't start on the National Treasure crap. He challenges the nation and is not a puppet of the establishment to be exploited for whatever reason.
@kapitankapital6580 It's his fearless digging into the Corruption and Dirt in Politics and corporate doings for Private Eye mag for Years that counts....not the odd zinger....constant Zingers, often sued for!
It's concerning that the only effective opposition in this country comes from a satirical newspaper (private eye) and a fictional news correspondent ( Jonathan pie)
@@michaelgillman2505and he’d actually cut through what’s being said to hold people to account and to find out things. PaxMan never did. Paxman simply delivered punch and Judy that was rude, and illicited nothing but attracted viewers. He just bullied his guests. When he started doing newsnight interviews he forgot any journalistic ability he ever had. Terrible waste of tv time and money. Hislop however I think is admirable, capable, smart eloquent, and says interesting things and asks important questions whilst rhetorically holding people to account.
Brilliant to see so many positive response , hopefully the subscriptions to the Private Eye will increase so it can continue its investigative journalism.
@@keithmarshall8796 shit argument. UK parliament is a corrupt, toxic cesspool of class privilege. It appeals to a certain type of self serving, morally bankrupt public schooled w4nker. Why would Ian want to be any where near this shower?
Starmer no principles and changes direction like the wind when he's not sitting on the fence on anything he can't answer too is going to be any better is he..he's full of BS, .. only for the gullible.
They only act in the best interests of their wealthy powerful friends who need to make more money. Most MP’s are snakes who I wouldn’t trust one bit. Literally ask an MP a question and they squirm out of it every time it’s sad.
