Just Lee Anderson saying all the wrong things about food poverty 

A guy that gets the taxpayers to pay for his food, hundreds of thousands of pounds he's spent on expenses. This country is utterly ridiculous.

You know what's horrible? We have this system now where completely mediocre people, without any discernible talent or skill, are elected to high office and called in to formulate policy that affect millions of people. These people are completely dependent on government salaries and hand-outs, and wouldn't do a normal job if their lives depended on it. Truly shameful...

I'm a chef and there's nothing really I can't cook, I live on a small budget now I'm retired. I used to shop with a budget of £1 per head per main meal so with 3 kids it was a fiver a day, that was 10 years ago. Today prices have more than doubled, my 3 kids have left home so it's just me and my other half and I struggle to keep the main meals to under a fiver. What 30p Lee doesn't take into account is not just price of the basic ingredients in a recipe of meat and veg, but it's the ancillary costs around that meal of seasonings, spices, fats and indeed the energy to cook it. I buy when meat is on special offer and stock up the freezer, I batch cook to save on fuel and freeze meals but this last few months I've seen my basic grocery bill rise from around 50 to 80 quid a week. I buy the cheapest brands I only use fresh vegetables and today I'm struggling because my income has not risen but every other bill has. My sister who retired 2 years ago has seen her fuel bill rise from 50 to 300 quid a month and then after Truss destroyed the confidence in the markets saw her mortgage double to over £1000 per month. That's an extra £750 a month she has to find and she doesn't have it! How many others are in the same boat? Trying to justify his party's destruction of people's living standards by telling people they can have a weetabix and some milk for 30 pence he can just feck off and do one. What a complete wanker. 😡

There is something inherently disgusting about a man who, on top of his £80k salary, claims £200k of taxpayers money to cover his expenses, telling people all their problems can be solved by just budgeting better.

How much do the meals he claims on expenses cost ? He's spending taxpayers money and you can bet your life he's not eating for 30 pence a meal.

He's absolutely full of it. His massive expenses claims would suggest that he doesn't know how to budget. He loves a handout.

I am a therapist in London and i saw clients that were disabled denied benefit for 2 months during the introduction of UC. During that time they were found fit for work by untraianed non-medical staff who were paid an insentive to cut benefit. As a result these people starved, became housebound and had breakdowns because of being gas-lit over their disabilities. Consecutive conservative governments have failed in their duty of care of our most vulnerable citizens. The people who are wasting our tax money is your mate rishi with stuff like eat out to help out (which by the way spread COVID).

He's a nasty, nasty man.. 😳🙄 He lacks decency and humanity demonising people who are struggling.

The fact he keeps mentioning he's not bothered about being called 30p lee is enough evidence for me to think it definitely bothers him

£30000 for working a few hours is not a common opportunity. A piece of toast is not a breakfast.

Difference between people like Jack Munro, Jamie Oliver and 30p Lee is that Lee is in Government and has the power to help change poverty in Britain. But chooses not to and instead allow his colleagues to spaff money on useless contracts (like the PPE ones given to tory friends) all while getting paid 86K a year and having all his food, heating and power subsidised by tax payers.

He never stops punching down does he. To all those people who believe him when he's blaming people who've no money or power, instead of the rich people who influence all the decisions. You're being played.

Don't forget when this man talks about examples, he was caught faking doorstep exchanges. Also as he is ex-labour he has to double down on the Tory side, got to show he's a loyal foot soldier. As you can tell by how many times he refers to himself as a tory.

So 30p per meal, so that's 90p a day a family of 4 that's £3.60 a day, £25.50 a week (if everyday this gruel was cooked in a batch for 200 families that is, if not we are tripling the cost). Without factoring in transport, electricity, gas, equipment to cook and the lack of nutrients being exceptionally damaging to young children of course. What a wonderful world Lee Anderson wants us to live in.

The issue is that people shouldn't have to try and budget down to 30p per meal.

The blazing hypocrisy of Lee mentioning Jack Monroe, being as she launched an action against him for claiming she profits from the poor. Jack: referring to her own budget recipes etc "Why do people need these in the first place?" There are 15 million people in vulnerable housing, rocketing homelessness and plummeting health outcomes for children in one of the richest economies in the world. But Lee Anderson, who is both paid for AND massively subsidised by the taxpayer, and his party remain staunchly shameless about their gargantuan failures.

Oh God I can’t stand this man and he’s my local MP 😢 also to add it’s not just people on universal credit struggling. It’s hard for all of us especially families on just above the threshold for UC. All children should get free school meals. I wonder which school in Ashfield it was though that he went to. Wasn’t my kids’ one as they charge for breakfast club as wrap around childcare. His biggest cost was on staffing at £165,215.27, followed by £33,144.30 on office costs and £17,650.60 on accommodation.

Nice one Lee, let’s amend the food allowance for all MPs to £50 a week…as if they even deserve to have any allowance for food at all. These people are so unbelievably out of touch. The point is, people have not been concerned about the cost of eating for decades, at least not on this scale. Saying you can make a meal for 30p to avoid the issue isn’t helping anyone. This will continue getting more severe if the government doesn’t make serious changes to our society. Perhaps once it was homeless or very low income individuals couldn’t eat, then it moved to lower mid, and now clearly impacting the mid-earning households. The issue is that costs will never increase enough for it to have any impact on the elite/decision makers in this country because they are just so much wealthier and represent such a tiny proportion of the population. On this trajectory, more than half the country will soon be concerned about feeding themselves before long.

50 quid over a week is £7.14. Three meals a day is £2.38 average meal for a family of four that’s 60p each . Not 30p. Then we factor fuel to cook, electricity to run the fridge/ freezer. Every MP needs to spend a day in the life of someone living on minimum wage and struggling to cope with any unexpected bill or the swingeing increase in costs of basics. The cost of living crisis affects those at the bottom end most, as a higher proportion of their money is spent on the bare essentials with no way to make cuts.

Just to clarify, one of Jack Monroe's meals might only cost 24p per person but you'd have to spend £14 on ingredients and then only use some of it, it also doesn't factor in the travel to shop and the internet/PC /electricity needed to get the recipe or the power to cook it and then all you end up with is a small plate of spaghetti with a bit of cheese and basil on it.

Just did the maths, and it would cost 25p for the milk alone (aldi). Another twenty six pence for two weetabix (serving suggestion two), and this makes up fourteen percent of an adult's calories. A fraction of a child's calorific intake. One breakfast.

Lets do some maths here. 30p per meal, 3 meals a day for 7 days, is £6.30 a week for 1 person using his example. He clearly thinks that people shouldn't be claiming any help for food, even that amount. Lee claimed £220,000 in expenses last year, which is tax payer money. This was in addition to his £84,000 a year salary. How likely is it that he spent only £6.30 a week on himself for food? Well the funny thing is, as he gets subsidised food and drink, again paid with tax payer money, that £6.30 figure might not be completely ridiculous after all, from his perspective

Surely, he is misrepresenting it as a "loop-hole" where in fact the Universal Cesit is "topping-up" effectively low pay. Perhaps, the obvious solution is to force companies to pay more so people won't need universal credit?
