A simple day sail in company on the Rade de Brest in Brittany, just enjoying the sun and the scenery - as well as visiting a bar together.

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994, which I bought in France and then imported into the UK, and more recently returned to France again. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century, hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Design category C3
François Vivier's website (in English):
www.vivierboats...
Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:
www.chasse-mar...
Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):
www.leboncoin.fr
Note on post-Brexit trade rules. Since January 2021, Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU with the intention of importing it into the UK, should pay VAT and other duties on the import.

What on Earth is that, a norwegian Oselver with a sprit sail...and a lug rig type upper boom? Sails are wonderful, anything you can imagine exists, and then some. Also his sail is twice the area of mine, and my boat is wider. But it's a local adaption. Just yesterday in 3m/s winds a snow squall came suddenly over the mountain, preceded by 20m/s gusts.
@andyjarman4958
@andyjarman4958 2 года назад
Looks like a standing gaff to me. Ian Oughtred designs a lot of 'double enders' you can buy his designs off his website. Nearly built my own, much lighter than the Ilur, they rely on the hull's integrity for their structural strength. The current Ilur kit uses bulkheads and carlin's (like an aeroplane wing) and that gives it more freeboard and interior storage/bouyancy - makes me feel safer at sea! Oughtred's yawls always put me in mind of a mussel shell - very graceful - but very shallow and open.
@stefflus08
@stefflus08 2 года назад
@@andyjarman4958 Oh wow, I didn't know we were being imitated. I can see the demand for plans using composite materials (sadly, I'm sure you could buy the real thing used, for less), but I found his 'design' "Woodfish", what a redundant thing that is, in a context completely detached from living tradition and the compromise of strength, suppleness and workability, and with what looks to me as a not flat enough bottom, probably to make sure anyone can make it from any old firewood.

Then last yr I searched out a mentor, an 80yr old guy appeared who needed deck hands . We all had a blast! Now I have my own 12' howmar, learning as I go. Hah, my home waters, Rade de Brest, as I've lived afloat 3 years here, based in Camaret for the long stormy winters, and anchoring, exploring Atlantic coast, all summer. I love seeking out those endless nooks and crannies of the Rade, even though my 1.7m draft scrapes bottom occasionally. I used to be an avid wayfarer dinghy cruiser, in Suffolk, coastal, estuaries and muddy creeks, with many adoptions to camp, and sail in most conditions. If I could find somewhere to store, ashore here, I'd have a simple dayboat, dinghy, even sailing canoe to these magical places. Very inspired by your video. Thank you.

I am slowly making my way back to Europe in a 34ft boat and have been wondering where best to live aboard (6 months a year). @Neptuneboy1959
@Neptuneboy1959 2 года назад
@@stephenburnage7687 although it can be very heavy skies, wet, misty, storms Dec to Feb, the temperatures are always moderate, being well out into Atlantic. It's probably the cheapest winter berth in France, although I've heard Dinan town quay is a great proposition, upriver from St Malo, if your draft modest, and totally protected, with a great ancient town. Camaret is small, isolated, far from Brest, just a daily bus, 7am, €2, but has one of everything needed, pharmacist, post office, v well stocked big supermarket, 2 boulangerie, and many bars, bistro, small restaurants, fish sellers, Chandler, sailmaker. Mostly, it's stunningly beautiful raw nature, ever changing sky, light, and easy going, unpretentious people, that make it home for me, and wows friends that visit. It can get many storms though, some winters, but last winter was exceptionally calm, barely any.
