Carlos Lago and the Daily Fix crew recently toured Icon with company founder Jonathan Ward. Icon prides itself on building completely custom vehicles that marry modern technology with classic design, be it trucks, SUVs, or cars. This FJ44 may have started life in 1973, but now it sports four doors and a Chevy V8. Anytime you can listen in on a conversation with Ward is a good day. Competence, salesmanship, eloquence, passion and knowledge. Yeah he makes toys for the rich, but so did Michaelangelo.

Not too impressed with the camera-work. Could you show us the CAR? Nice interview, but we did not really get much of a view of the engine. Show us the neat stuff that Carlos is looking at! Instead of showing us Carlos looking at neat stuff.

For a weekly, interview type interview fancy camera work is fine. But that camera shake... barrrfffff. Towards the end camera guy, get a little tired of holding the camera... lol

because of how youtube wants to run their website. inst profitable anymore....due to changes in ad revenue (this video has burnouts, thats unsafe for children, de-monetized) mass flagging from heroes....and flags in general for content that is clearly fair use. costs money to fight that battle. youtube has gone to shit....motertrend arnt the only people to move off youtube.....LOTS of people are moving off youtube not saying buy MT on demand....but, thats WHY this is happening.,

There isn't many. Most of the channels just suck the manufactures dick in desperation for more press cars. Motortrend is the only channel besides consumers report who does proper testing. Consumer report purchases their cars ... so they are at another level.

Hansel Carfection never has anything negative to say. Top gear(both new and old) is not really a pure car show. Chris Harris no longer makes videos. Smokingtire does not review new cars in detail like this. He mainly does quick looks.

About the dashboard clock. If you really wanna geek out, look at nixie tubes. A nixie tube clock is not only replaceable, but will make the entire rest of the car look better.

J. Ward is a total and complete badass. Not worth paying to watch the video but it's a cool video nonetheless. The FJ44 is cool. Headlights don't look that bad though its housing doesn't look like it'll project well enough. Also, you don't need to use dynamat there are way cheaper alternatives that do just as good or better.

So is this a new vehicle or old custom, do the registration papers say 1973 or 2016? And what exactly is kept from the original vehicle since everything seems to be new.

I think in the coming decade, manufacturers like Icon will be places where you can get such vehicles due to new DOT regulations. They don't actually have to comply to the regulations and can sell these types of vehicles. Possible re-emergence of small companies in auto.

It's also one of the most durable, given that it isn't made of plastic in every single crevice. It's a specialty vehicle built to last, rather than to fall apart. Hence the price increase for quality materials.

I built a FJ40 once , it was almost completely remade out of checker plate steel and riding on a chevy truck 350 and 4 speed power train . All in about 5000$ to build your own , Good paint on the outside good undercoating underneath some spray on bedliner for the interior , and your 5000$ FJ should last for ever . I don't have mine anymore because of kids and gas prices making it to expensive , but the one i had will never end up here because he only buys the ones that are in the ( I give up ) category . Props to Jonathan Ward for figuring out another way to take money from people in the ( more money than brains ) category

I know the cost, I understand the issues, I think this is a great way to get a vehicle that you can buy to hand down to future generations. The progressive future tech is great. My only issues and mind you this its simply from watching this video, the ground clearance of the front diff without some sort of protection. I'm not sure of the rest of the undercarriage but i'm hoping there are greater protections for the drive components. My feeling from this video is they are concerned about all aspects of what this vehicle is going to do and what its capable to do. When looking at a company such as ICON i'm personally wanting them to build off road vehicles for families.

You guys just don't get it do you! You take a rare classic truck, then chop it up till its completely unrecognizable. I've done my fair share of upgrades to my CJ5, but at its heart its still a old jeep. Why turn a 1960's FJ into a tricked out Jeep Rubicon? Just buy a damn Rubicon then!

Well because as far as I'm aware these FJ's aren't really valuable or even that rare. Plus if I recall the majority of the trucks that they purchase for conversion are in the worst of the worst shape. After all these guys are changing the body, frame, engine, trans, suspension, electrical and etc. it doesn't really make sense to purchase a 50k Truck when you're pretty much just going to scrap the entire thing. Same thing goes for the Singer Porsches and Eagle E-Types, 99% of the cars they purchase are well beyond saving.
