#thelifeandsadending #dragnet #adam12 Mini bio about the life of actor Jack Webb. He was most famous for playing the part of Sgt. Joe Friday on the TV show "Dragnet". Written edited and produced by Steven Tevis. Copyright 2024
I am a retired LAPD lieutenant and served the citizens of Los Angeles for 36. My primary motivation for choosing this career watch watching both Dragnet and Adam-12. Thank you Jack Webb for inspiring thousands to take on the noble profession of providing service to the public.
...and you're probably a white racist just like darryl gates, joseph wambaugh and the great majority of the white lapd establishment who recruited thousands of racist white cops from southern states and rural america who expedited their police mentality and their police duties with extreme prejudice, bigotry and racism.
I bought the complete set of “Dragnet” and can watch it on Plex anytime, anywhere. Still love me some Blueboy. I also picked up “Adam 12” and “Emergency.” Jack Webb was the best, “just the facts, ma’m.”
Wonderful! Nice job, Steve! Gone too soon but he smoked like s chimney. Loved Dragnet, loved Emergency! growing up, own every season of Adam-12 on dvd. RIP Jack Webb.
Glad that the Dragnet with both Jack & Harry is still on the air, as it covered a lot of topics that are still relevant these days. Sure, the funny-looking hippies are gone, but I still watch it every morning.
It’s amazing that Jack did Dragnet on both radio and TV from 1952-59. I’ve watched every episode of the 1967-70 second Dragnet series. Locally we used to have old radio shows on late at night. My clear favourite was Dragnet. It’s too bad Jack passed away before they could get the third series underway.
Thank you for the life of Jack Webb I never missed Jack Webb that was a great series and it's still on TV after all this time thank you for the update and story of Jack Webb so said he gone too soon❤😢
Bonus note: Last time I checked, tons of Dragnet radio shows were available on The Internet Archive. I downloaded, burned to mp3 CD, and listened at work. It's fun identifying the episodes that were later recycled by Webb for the TV show, and you can hear him interrogating a young punk played by Martin Milner (more than once, I think).
I did love to watch Dragnet when I was a kid. And later on too. Way back, my Dad and his brother, Don used to rush to their Mom's house to watch DRAGNET; after their jobs. They picked Grandma's house because it was closest. 😂 Thanks 😊 for this look at Jack Webb's life, Steve. 👍
When I watch a 'Life and Sad Ending' from you about a person I don't know too much, I remember Cliff Notes when I was in college. I didn't read the book but the cliff notes told me the important stuff. I only knew a little bit about Jack Webb but your 'mini bio' about him told me all the important stuff. Enjoy your weekend Steve......
The line "Just the facts, mam" only occurred in the radio show. The most used line on tv was "Joe, see you a minute?" He was buried with a replica 714 badge. The real one is on display at the LAPD Academy, permanently retired. Small fact i appeared as a walk-by extra in the Adam-12 episode. "Suspect Number One" I conned my way into meetimg Marty Milner and Kent McChord. They were great! Yeah, I am a Dragnut!
In the military, I rank Jack Webb with R Lee Ermey. His performance as The D.I. was superb. Definitely brought back memories when I served which was the best decision I ever made. Strength and Honor.
Those shows were instrumental in shaping my career path. In 1975 I applied for LAPD but ultimately decided to stay in San Diego county. Wish I hadn’t taken that period of my life for granted. ✌️
Just in case no one had heard it before, there is a story behind Joe Friday's badge number. Jack Webb was a fan of Babe Ruth, who hit 714 home runs during his career. That is why the badge number was 714. It is a good thing that you have included a picture. Now I can tell which is the true "The Life and Sad Ending" channel is.
I searched and found your post before I repeated it. I have wonderful memories of being Joe Friday, and my sister was Bill Gannon! Sometimes I have a moment of anamnesis - a brief but valid memory of my sister and I playing Dragnet by the House with June Bugs - that is triggered each time I hear the theme song. For that one second or so, I am transported to 1967.
Oh yeah, i I remember the show Hec Ramsey , Richard Boone and I lived in the same town , I (still do )my brother did work on his home 🏠 I don’t think I knew Jack Webb was once married to Julie London . I watch 2. Episodes of Dragnet every morning ,emergency still comes on every day as 📺 well. Enjoyed 👍👋
Jack Webb is a person of HERO status. By producing police shows, he put the police profession in a very positive light. Many people became policemen because of his shows. He instilled confidence in the law enforcement professions as well as that of paramedics and firemen(Emergency). He also tried diligently to restore faith in public service. I grew up watching his shows. Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao, two crooked cops, attempted to destroy most of what Jack Webb did. I have heard of too many stories on RU-vid and other places of crooked and obnoxious cops bullying innocent people further destroying Jack Webb's work. Although I have never been arrested, I have crossed paths with too many cops who are smart alecks! For example, my catalytic converter was stolen in 2010. The cop, who made the police report, said that my catalytic converter was stolen because I owned a Toyota Tacoma. I said to the cop, "Just write down the police report, and omit your opinion. What make and model of car would you recommend me buying?" He was silent after that. I gave him a Jack Webb-like response to his remarks. I have some other incidents with cops which have destroyed my confidence in cops. I have noticed that cops are extremely insecure people! My sister married an ex-cop. He was the most insecure person that I have ever met in my life because he flunked out of college, and I have 3 college degrees! He was not the only one. I have given Jack Webb-like responses to many people. These responses have changed many people's moral, political, and social views. They say, "I never thought of it that way!" or they say, "You're Right!" I wish that someone like Jack Webb would run for president. This country desperately needs more heroes like Jack Webb!
Love it! I watched the show on Nick at Night as a pre-teen and teenager. Still do today once in a while. Love the channel, man. At least until I meet my sad disconnection from the internet.💀😱😁
Webb always seemed to me an unlikely star, mainly because of his dour demeanor. He was a very talented man with legions of fans and much success. Thanks Steve.
Loved watching this show when I got home after school I was in the army for 6 yrs and watched it then can not get enough of this show I hade to hear this about him
What has happened to great tv shows? I just keep learning more and more about Jack webb. I watched speraticly when I was young . Back then you had to watch it when it aired. Now I'm watching all episodes of TV shows from my youth. Love the actors and actresses and the old metal bumper vehicles. Schwinn bicycles. And well you know all of it.
Also a big fan of Jack Webb and the shows that he produced. Emergency was my favorite. Helped spark my interest in health care. Never made it to Paramedic level. Have been a basic EMT for years and did become a EMT-intermediate for a number of years. The last 34 years I have spent working in Respiratory Therapy as a CRT/RRT and CPFT. Don’t help with EMS anymore but keep the EMT-B certification. I’m also a fan of the cast of Emergency, still like the old reruns of that show.
I remember listening to the old Dragnet radio broadcasts over Armed Forces Radio while stationed in Korea back in the 70s. It made those cold lonely nights pulling guard duty go a little faster😅😊
One of the reasons, he did the Dragnet show for the second time to be bring attention to the problems of Drugs. He was revered by the LA Police Department. His funeral was given full honors by the LAPD. The badge he used on Dragnet is on display at the LAPD museum. He did charity work for cops who were killed in the line. Lots of the actors that had appeared several times on the Dragnet show were friends of his. Not well known but he was a jazz enthusiast. I heard that he turned down the role in Animal House because he felt it defamed the Sgt Friday character. Harry Morgan and Webb were best friends, before and after Dragnet. A problem of his was, he was a chain smoker.
the reasoning that Emegrncy ended in 1977 was that was the season that made both Roy and Johnny CAPTS right before Roy had taken the ENGINEERING exam & passed it, but he didn't take it cause he could be BOTH an ENGINEER and a paramedic at the same time and also there was a cartoon of EMERGENCY
As a child, I watched "Dragnet" from its beginning & even remember Bart Yarborough, as Webb's original partner! My sight impaired Grandmother would listen to the radio version, (which was broadcast simultaneously) in one room, while I watched the t.v. version, in another!/ This program was unlike any other "police show" & all subsequent police dramas, to this day, owe their realism & specific content to this 'groundbreaking' program! R.I.P. Jack #714! p.s. (I recall Sgt. Friday being promoted to Lt., before the original series ended, but "demoted' to Sgt. when the show resumed!)
watched Dragnet every single week till then end! Remember he was married to singer Julie London and she accused him of beating her.. "Cry me a River" fame...
I wish the 80s version of Dragnet had made it to air at least a year or two. It would've been very interesting. Webb didn't take care of his health enough sadly.
The late 60s incarnation of Dragnet was hysterically funny. You were almost guaranteed to get Sgt. Friday sternly lecturing hippies about their behavior. The lecture would of course go unheeded, and then they died from mainlining pot or acid. I believe the show was popular because many Americans wanted to get in hippies’ faces like Joe Friday did. Dude looked 15 years older than he really was. Should have cut down on the cigarettes and bourbon. And he should have taken the role of Dean Wormer.
I never missed Emergency when I was a kid. I think Jack really showed his sense of humor when he did the Clean Copper Clappers sketch with Johnny Carson.
Interesting/informative/entertaining.Off & on over the years I watched A hand full of reruns. Harry Morgan went on to have a flourishing career. Wonder how far Webb's career would have gone???🤔Wishing viewers a safe/healthy/prosperous (2024)🌈🎉💵😉.
I'm thinking a Broderick Crawford "Life" video would be well received by the same folks enjoying Jack Webb's story ! Broderick would pull his 1955 Buick Century up to the location of the bad guy's hideout... whip out his trusty 38 special, lean across the roof of that cruiser and shoot the bad guys 100 yards away ! What a shot ? What a show ? The Good Old Days ? Broderick loved his booze
Man, cigarettes and booze sure exacted a heavy toll on his body -- he looks about 80 in that thumbnail picture. I wanted that badge -- 7/14 is my birthday. Adam-12 is still a pretty entertaining show -- they also did an episode that was a pilot for a show about the DA's office starting Frank Sinatra, Jr. Jack's daughter, Stacy, had a production staff credit on Adam-12, collaborated on a book about her father, and was killed in an auto accident involving a Highway Patrol car. Oh, and speaking of the CHP, you can spot the Sergeant from Adam-12 as an officer in some old episodes of Broderick Crawford's Highway Patrol (another related program).
I remember watching an old Dragnet rerun, it must have been one of the episodes from the late 1960's, in which Sgt. Friday told a cautionary tale about a hippie who took LSD and went blind from staring at the sun. Note: no such case ever happened.
We watched Adam-12 and Emergency! What people tend to forget us that Emergency! basically jump started the use of EMS on scene rather than transport to the ER which has saved millions of lives around the World.
The United States Government doesn't want you to see the last show Jack Webb made for NBC . It was called Project UFO even though I thought it was Project Bluebook because that is what the show was about . They were based on actual UFO sightings . It was a really great show and was doing great ratings . Then it was cancelled all of a sudden over alleged poor ratings . The last episode I remember had (in my opinion) the first appearance of Men In Black . The men in black would spy on the UFO investigators during the show . At the end they present themselves to the investigators and basically tell them to mind their own business .
