so the answer is , yes it can be airbrushed , but no it doesn't work as intended . i can see this being useful for painting large flat areas then using the same contrast paint for areas with more texture/folds etc. in order to match the paint color exactly . good video , thanks !

This exact thing is why I searched RU-vid for a video like this. Planning on airbrushing some space marine tanks and wanted to see if I could use the contrast paint or if I needed to colour match a different paint

It won’t work as intended through an airbrush but it seems like it will give a smoother gradient for a deeper shade of the color. That yellow looked pretty good if you want to give more depth to yellow figures

But that's the opposite of the effent you usually want to achieve - contrast from an airbrush used on model with such rich texture stays on top and is not going deeper into recesses. So in the end you have darker, thick paint where you should have highlights and light recesses :D

So does it need thinned? Do you think it’s transparent? Could I use it on top of a metallic base coat and make like a candy color?

No it doesn't "need" to be thinned. You could if you wanted to. The first iteration of Citadel Colour Contrast paints are primarily transparent and will work on top of a metallic base. Is it the same as a "candy color"? No. They have different finishes. Typical candy colors tend to be gloss where as Citadel Contrast finishes satin/matte. But i suspect this will do what you want it to do.

So it seems that while they don't get the contrast effect when airbrushed, they function as an at least decent airbrush paint. That's my takeaway anyway.

A thinned down shade wash wouldn't hurt. Straight from the bottle should be fine as well.

Hey Kris, thanks for testing this for us! Question - what was cleaning the airbrush like? Brush painting with these it's so clear that there are some interesting chemicals being used and I am curious if there are any issue cleaning. I would also love to know how it is to brush contrast over the airbrushed contrast.

Cleaning the airbrush is fine. This paint is simply a water based product and cleans the same as any other water based paint.

thinner isn't really needed with Citadel Colour Contrast paints.

missed opportunity to use "See ya later, aligator!" at the end. ;D so technically, they behave somewhat like inks when sprayed. do they still need to be sprayed on light primed models? or can they be used to build up a colour scheme from a dark primer?

lol, damn you're right! They are transparent color. The black will absorb the reflected light. So prime using bright color or white.

Indeed that's what I took from that. It will travel through an airbrush, but it won't do its party trick.

What did you use to thin it down? I'm used to using distilled water for the most part with my airbrush but had heard that Lahmian medium is the preferred thinner for these new paints.

Do you mean by adding a thinner? I would imagine it would apply more gradually and you would have to lay more of it down to build to the same saturation. The result most likely would be very subtle.

@@WayoftheBrush Granted I don't know much about airbrushes but GW did say that you can't thin Contrast paints with water. You have to use their medium. But that would only affect the concentration of pigment, huh? It's just that the airbrush won't really do anything special with it because it is designed to work at a certain thickness and viscosity, right? I can see using it in combination with airbrush paints though. If you're just experimenting, you could try airbrushing a khaki or off-white on the stomach of say, a troggoth, and a green or blue or whatever color you want on its back, and then use a large brush to paint a flesh tone from the Contrast line over both to tie them together. Stuff like that?

It's kind of annoying that even though currently there are very few up close examples of contrast paints in action, the few people that did managed to get their hands on it insist on using in all kinds of ways nobody would ever use contrast paints for, like weathering or airbrushing.

I for one cant wait to try out the contrast paints in a variety of ways, brush/airbrush different base coats, zenithal highlights etc. Do you know if there is due to be a kantor blue sort of shade? May try them on an as yet unpainted marine army project I have on the shelf.
