Lots of you bought my chair plans, More to support me than wanting to build chairs. Much appreciated.
And ads on RU-vid seem to be getting a bit too much lately. Just use an ad blocker, don't feel guilty about it. Enough is enough!

Apocalypse: Matthias comes out on top. Corona: Matthias comes out on top. How are you doing this? About Patreon: It seems I understand the concept differently than many others. I support people on Patreon because I think they're cool and I want them to be less stressed about RU-vid and the evil algorithm and sales counts. That's why I don't want any perks or demand content. My "perk" is knowing that you're better off and that I'm providing a fixed offset, some money you earn no matter what. The worst to me would be, if you had to pass spending time with your family because you need to make a video or something.
@Nono-hk3is
@Nono-hk3is 3 года назад
Same here, the concept of perks is understandable but creates a relationship that undermines the idea of patronage. It tends to create anxiety for some creators or disappointment for some patrons, not to mention how some patreon accounts create a large hierarchy of patron levels gating significant amounts of content, which creates so much "fear of missing out" anxiety that it seems uncomfortably manipulative.

i think a good way to go about doing this is to put the plans on patreon for those that want to support the creator, that's fine with me. i'm here for the youtube videos i don't even like wood working but it's just fun to watch. i don't like the idea of youtubers deciding that they need to make exclusive content for there patreon, like isn't the whole point of begging for money so you can make youtube videos or support themself? like sure people that donate money obvious are entitled to get more just because they have money to donate.

I've seen videos by some creators that specifically called people using adblockers as freeloaders. I've always used one since the net is almost unusable without one. I have no regrets. The ads during election seasons in the US are so obnoxious that I wouldn't be able to get through them before clicking off the videos. The problem is the ad industry behind all the ads. When I watch on the smart TV and see some of the ads, I notice that the same ads play over and over. They aren't creative or interesting, just nuisances. Advertisements are the reason I gave up TV in general. Good riddance to them. I suppose I am not the target audience for them.

While I think calling anyone a freeloader is a bit harsh these are still people who do make content for free and people who are trying to make a living. We are so used to getting a lot of things for free I think we have devalued the effort people actually spend to keep us informed and entertained. Personally I think adblockers are great, and I have no qualms about people using it on my channel. Though, I think if you support people you can very easily make an exception for RU-vid in your adblocker if you don't want to support people more directly 🙂

I think using ad-block is just entering a downwards spiral. The people who dont use it will get more ads, because others use the blocker. This turns more people towards using blockers etc. I agree, that sometimes RU-vid puts extreme amount of ads in videos. My latest experience was a rewatch of a live stream, where at some point in a 25 minute span, ads were coming every 3-5 minutes. This can completely ruin the viewing experience. It was nice to hear about this stuff. I am in the camp, that watches the ads all the way on channels I regularly visit. Now I will consider donating directly instead. Thank you for the honest talk.

@IanSmithKSP
@IanSmithKSP 3 года назад
Matthias, I’ve said this many times in the past and I’m gonna pitch this to you again - you should have a patreon and you should lean into its benefits to supporters. Your content is valuable because of your knowledge. You said it once yourself that the content IS the video and what you make in the video is secondary. To the viewer, what you make in the video is the content, but the knowledge is essentially free. It’s an imbalance that deserves a change. Make a patreon and make all your plans free for subscribers maybe at the $10 a month range. You could then offer videos a week early to supporters. Or have an option for a $3 a month subscription with no real benefits but for people like myself who understand that the ad-based model is not good for society. It’s bad for everyone. I’ve learned so much from you over the years. As a young woodworker by trade, I use techniques I’ve learned from you probably every day. $3 a month is nothing for me, and if you’ve got even 200 other people who feel the same way - or are coerced to understand the meaning of that small donation - you could really save yourself a lot of stress and could give us content that’s not preferred by RU-vids algorithms quite so much. EDIT: I just remembered seeing a new Membership function on RU-vid recently - from the RU-vidr "Ethoslab". I've been watching him for 9 years. He's an extremely creative, friendly person and I enjoy his content more than any TV channel or musician ever. His Subscription options have no benefits and he admits that they're purely for optional donations. He didn't mention them, I just found them. What this means to me is that RU-vid understands the value of the patronage system and are probably hoping to undercut the value of third-party services like Patreon, who probably rake in tens of millions a year by now. Don't be ashamed to try it out! It's not a handout! Your content is valuable to us, and it can always be optionally free through a service like RU-vid. But content isn't meant to be free, and this free structure of the internet is leading to the destruction of democratic society itself because, in an ad-based system, our attention itself is valuable enough to be seized like a slot machine. As long as the free version of your content is still available, users will have no reason to complain about a patronage option as well. It's better for your viewers to have an option that's separate from the predatory ad-based system that we have now. RU-vid is one of many social media apps that compete for attention of its users which makes them complicit in the society-wide loss of generations of spare time through clickbait. P.S. your chairs are really beautiful and I admire your dad's craftsmanship. They get more handsome the more I look at them!

I have no shop and it still doesn't seem likely that I would in the near-term. One never knows how life goes. There is beauty in plans themselves however, and so it does not matter at all if I never build it as I will enjoy just looking at them and knowing I supported some great content as its creator wished.

We would love to just see things like your next mouse maze or something! Just a suggestion! You should see what some of these Gaming RU-vidrs are doing to monetize their audience, it's insane! Don't feel bad about monetizing especially your content. I have watched you for many years and have learned so much. You provide a ton of value for your videos for completely free. I think YT membership is the way to go!

Love this comment - thanks for putting my thoughts into words, particularly about how much you’ve learned. I’m an amateur/DIY woodworker (and even that might be an overstatement), but the tips, techniques and thought processes I learned from Matthias has been incredible, and I’m sure have saved me more money than I’ve spent on the few plans I’ve bought. But, I’m completely happy to support creators like Matthias - their time and effort deserves recompense.

No way. YT membership is _really_ pricey for what you get. Yes, I learn stuff from Matthias' content, but I'm not paying more than 1/3 of a Netflix subscription for it. I generate ad revenue with my views, and I purchase the stuff that interests me from makers, even for stuff I'm not going to, or can, build. Does it sound contradictory? With YTM, I HAVE to pay, regardless if content I'm interested in or not is delivered. With purchasing plans (or donations), I pay for content I've enjoyed and I'm not buying a pig in a poke. YTM goes live and I'm out. Sorry.

Too expensive and RU-vid takes a big chunk of the cash too. Sell plans, merch, t-shirts with plans on?

The chair plans were a great idea. Not sure why they didn't sell. I would have bought except I close my outside shop during winter. I do wish you had a better method of molding the chair seat. I am not crazy about the flat chairs.

I’ve been one of your patrons for a while (because I looked for you out there). I say go for the Patreon route. If people don’t feel they are getting value for supporting you they can always cancel ore reduce. I think anybody who supports your work knows what they are in for. Help us help you help us!!

Don’t waste your time, I signed up to stop all ads a couple of months ago, believe or not it was an advert to stop adverts, I watch a lot of you tube but I haven’t seen an ad since signing up for that and until you mentioned ads in this video I had forgotten about having to watch ads and now I just enjoy the videos.

I love your gear program lol. Bought it a while ago and have used it to make gears for some cool projects. I even cut some pin gears out of brass and made a really cool rack and pinion for a 3d printer.

I sincerely appreciate what you do and how you do it. In my case, the tools and jigs that you design so well are the things I have been most excited about and would like to see more of. Your chair work is cool! However, my lovely wife has filled our house with more chairs than we need already (arghhh). You make mention of designing a router table - I built one about 20 years ago that I would like to update so I would readily buy a set of plans for your router table design. Thanks again for your work and your honesty and integrity of design.

Hey, Matthias. Big fan of your work. I purchased your chair plans last week just to support you. Glad to hear I gained ad-block absolution because I've been using ad blockers for probably 20 years. I also just joined your Patreon. I'd have joined ages ago if I'd known for sure it was really you. Considering you had no mention of it on the channel I thought it might have been a fake account trying to make money on your good name!

It's true, i was just about to abandon the platform, but someone turn me on to Adblocker. It works. The ads just sucked so bad. . . Hope you can continue, all the best.

I've seen a tablesaw jig that worked for cutting out the seat for wooden chairs. It would take multiple passes, but it worked pretty well.

It's probably a good idea to always have the videos monetized from the moment you upload, cos the YT algorithm favors them over non-monetized content.

Hey Matthias, I was wondering if you would do a video on using your big print program? I’m building your 16 bandsaw and your jointer an I seem to always get hung up in the big print. Thanks. I consider myself a regular. Looking forward for your next project. Thanks you for doing this

You should have been told by now but as a creator, you can disable automated mid-roll ads in your videos. I never allow RU-vid to pick the placements. If I have one, I pre-plan the time placement. As a consumer, I pay for RU-vid Premium for an ad-free experience. Plus, I can download videos and I also get 'background play'. That means I can start a video, close the app and still listen to the audio from the video.

I love RU-vid premium! The $10 a month fee is well worth not having to sit through any ads whatsoever.

Matthias, I like the idea of buying plans to support because you get most of the revenue and it’s direct. On that note, the projects that are easy to do or are fun like the cap thrower are what I may buy for the time being. I’ve bought the more complex plans before but my skill set hasn’t reached those levels yet. Thanks for the great videos and sharing your adventures with us.

Greetings from Nebraska, USA! I found you when I was searching for a bandsaw solution in my shop (years ago). I'm guessing I'm one of the few who has found your RU-vid channel through your website, via organic search results. I ended up purchasing the plans for the 14" bandsaw. I'm about halfway through, children and a career derailing my intended timeline. That said, if you're expecting year over year sales to decline on your plans, you might get extra mileage out of them by offering a comprehensive option. Access to all plans for the cost of 3 or such. I love your work, keep it up!

Advertising is poison, but I can't blame you for it. It's hard to participate in the economy without it. I bought a table saw plan from you some years ago, so I guess I can have a clean conscience while using an ad blocker. Love your videos, hope you can keep doing them.
