Five members of the Donnelly family were murdered by a mob of frightened neighbours in 1880 in Middlesex County, north of Lake Erie. Called The Black Donnellys, they had committed crimes of assault, arson, trespassing, verbal assault, attempted murder, the murder of Patrick Farrell, theft, robbery and assaulting a police officer. The Donnelly murders were 134 years ago and 300 km west of Port Hope. Bill Matyak (sp?) was murdered (some believe it was self defense) 35 years ago in the Queens Hotel (later renamed The Walton) When I moved to Port Hope in 1970, The Queens was a friendly neighbourhood bar; a good place to have a beer and visit with friends. Over the years that followed, it became a strip joint and a real dive before it finally closed. It is now under renovation.
The Donnlly's were white.......Irish in fact. The family was murdered and nobody was charged for the crime even though everyone knew who was responsible and who was involved. The case of the Satan's Choice Murder went to a jury trial and through many appeals after that. Even though only one man fired the gun all the brothers that were there were convicted because they were there for a common purpose that resulted in the death. That is the law. I really don't understand the comparison between the two events..........but I like the song!
If one is interested in reading about the songs second subject, check out the book Unrepentant: The Strange and Sometimes Terrible Life of Lorne Campbell.
@Juliemorgana I've just watched a Documentary on Irish Television about the history behind the song. It is a great song, which aptly describes the injustice caused to the Irish Donnelly Family, resulting in their Massacre by a Cowardly Mob in Ontario. Power to the Irish, because we always eventually destroy Injustice !!!

I don't think its terrible singing, it has a sort of anxious/nervous, omenous sort of desperation to it, that fits the actual story of the Donnelly's perfectly
Lee Edward Thanks Lee, I may have to do that. I have read a little about what happened. I guess I really shouldn't say "Good song", since it wasn't a good situation, but I like the music and Steve definitely speaks his mind.
funny story about this my dad grew up in port hope on a farm, and beside them a little ways lived the donnellys and he knew them very well my dad told me he was a great man very helpful he would always help them with hay and he would use to come to his school on his bike and make my dad look cool i guess you could say, and then when they found out he had died is one of the reasons my dad wanted to be a police officer!
i live 5 minutes from where this all happened...thier blacksmith is was on my land,,these people were fucked by society and id like to tell thier story the TRUE way!!!
For any1 who is interested in the full and truth story of the port hope murder of Bill Matyak google THE PORT HOPE 8..Everything is on their all witneses statements and everything you need to know...Truley an amazing story...L,R..To all involved and a special shout out to Lorne Campbell....
my uncle was involved in the whole fiasco here.... The story is about the killing of a man in Port Hope, Ontario and how the arrested and sent a whole bunch of guys to prison becuase of "conspiracy to commit murder" and the man who actually committed the murder was let off scott free because none of the witnesses could idnetify him as being at the crime scene. No justice in Ontario....

Sorry - I didn't interpret him as saying he lived near the same Donnellys, just found it funny there was a family with the same name in Port Hope (which is where the club murder happened, not where the Donnelly's lived).
I don't think they were entirely innocent.. but I would bet that a lot of things that went wrong in the district might have been wrongfully directed at The Donnelly's as they were sure-scale scapegoats for the entire community. Not excusing actions or bills against them, but even something that went wrong, without proof or witness, I think through reputation and routine the Donnelly's were wrongfully blamed for a lot things, but that doesn't excuse what they were caught doing
R.I.P the Donnelly family thay were true irish legends thay stole and killed to get wat thay wanted but most of them died that night accepted William Donnelly and some kid....and it was the irish hu started the mob in the usa and Canada!!
Seeing all of these comments about the Donnellys being innocent...go to Wikipedia and find them. There's no way that they can be as innocent and loving as you all seem to say if Johannah cursed out many officers, and they managed to make so many enemies in Middlesex (so close to where I live, I can't help but take interest in their story).
