March 2024- Revisiting a time-tested Earle classic after a good friend and wife went to see him last night at the Grand Ole Opry. I shared that I too saw him in his youth right after he released the Copperhead Road album (late 1980s). If you like this album, check out his previous album, EXIT O. Steve Earle is a genuine American treasure.

My five times great grandfather, born in Scotland, moved to America in early 1770s. Lived in Philadelphia til after the War of Independence. He was in the Militiamen who fought the British. After America was free, he moved to Ross's Landing, now known as Chattanooga, TN. He died in 1831 and is buried in Blount County, TN. Of him it was said, even in his published obit, that he made the finest whiskey known to man. There were no laws at that time prohibiting folks from making their own. I imagine that this would have been some of the early beginnings of whiskey making in Tennessee. So the Moonshine heritage in Tennessee dates WAY back

I was curious so I just did the math and 100 pounds of yeast is enough to make 6500 gallons of Mash. Went to Town twice a year so 13,000. After Distilling the mash, that's about 4,000 gallons of alcohol. Moonshine season Runs about 26 weeks. That'd be running about 153 gallons a week. 3 to keep, 150 to bootleg. Sounds like He knew his stuff when he wrote this.

Those 2 songs define the Vietnam experience, totally different songs but equally powerful if you just listen to the lyrics. "And can you tell me, Doctor, why I still can't get to sleep? And why the Channel Seven chopper chills me to my feet? And what's this rash that comes and goes? Can you tell me what it means? God help me...I was only 19..."

Dude, you don't have to be American to enjoy this story. You get the whole story, in true Appalachian style and set to a haunting strong tune full of country music. @@beatlesrgear,Aww that, s really to bad. I'm so sorry to hear that. It happens to a lot of ppl actually. Who ever made that should be ashamed to ever let anyone get that swill. As a descendant of a shiner from Copperhead Rd. I can assure you that if you ever get to taste any made there, you will never want anything else. At 140 to 190 proof depending on what part of the run ya get, it's all so 😅 smooth you don't even feel it go down but then it hits nice and warm on its way back up. Flavor depending on what it's made from, I prefer corn because It gives a nice corn flavor and it's delicious if made right. But you never realize you are drinking some licker that's twice the proof of regular licker untill you get a couple in ya. Suddenly out nowhere you are quite buzzed. That's real moonshine.

MOONSHINE in WVA. meant the biggest moon shining usually in the winter, but in today"s world it is a concoction made up of corn or wheat. You should never try it alone. sometimes it can burn your throat and also make you feel all of a sudden very warm inside, but if it is the purist stuff then it will look and taste like water. never drink it when your hot .and you should be sitting down when drinking it because it carries a wallop!!!!!!!!!!!! personally, i have never tried the stuff, just what i have heard.

@kevinwolf5193 I’m almost 70 and I think it has to do with where one grows up, ethnicity, etc. My dad was Italian so I pretty much know all of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin songs. And other Italian artists some may not know are Italian line Tony Bennett and Frankie Lane. A predominantly white, Irish/Italian hosing project. I was the first kid on my block that absolutely loved the black bands back then. David Ruffin and the Temptations, The Four Tops, etc. I blew the muffler in my ’73 Pontiac LeMans passing a car on a double yellow line while listening to ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’. I had 8 cylinders and a need for speed. Same song many moons later, singing along, came to a strong line in a verse and thought the poor on the poor lady going in the opposite direction, windows down, almost had a stroke!

Oddly as a car guy I just stick with classic Chrysler products(Mopar) 60's Dodge Charger's,70's Cuda's,Super Bee's etc...I love all types of music but one type of car.I love cruising in them with my music blasting,I have a modern hidden system in a few of them..Nothing better than driving and listening to the radio and hearing the big block Dodge V8 rumble! We have music somewhat in common and I bet I am way older than you lol..early 50's but look young & fit..Happily married and 4 kids... Have a Great Summer&Life! John Lee Pettimore Sr ran moonshine in the Great Depression. That is why he was buying yeast and copper line. The revenue/revenuer man is trying to arrest him for selling whiskey without paying tax. "Revenue" as in Internal Revenue Service, he's a type of tax collector. He headed up the holler with everything he had - meaning he went into the "hollow", the valley where Pettimore lived. His son, John Lee Pettimore Jr, followed the tradition and ran whiskey in a big-block Dodge, a former police car with a big engine that he bought at auction. Pettimore Jr and his brother rebuilt the engine to make it more powerful. Something went wrong on his trip to Knoxville; maybe he was arrested, but since we can metaphorically smell the whiskey burning, I'd guess he crashed trying to escape police and died. John Lee Pettimore III, the singer, volunteered for the Army on his birthday. He could have done so at age 17 with parental consent, or 18 without parental consent. He did two tours of duty, meaning he spent two years actually in Vietnam. Since U.S. troops pulled out in 1972, that means he arrived no later than 1970, so he was born in 1953 at the latest. He could have arrived as early as 1965 or even earlier, meaning that the earliest he was likely born would be 1947. Pettimore III came home from Vietnam and, having presumably been exposed to drug use in the Army, decided to revive the family business by planting marijuana and using ideas from the Vietkong ("Charlie") to protect the holler from anybody who wanted to snoop. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is using a helicopter to figure out what he's doing. Maybe seeing a helicopter reminds him of military helicopters in Vietnam, because the next line says that he wakes up screaming like he's in Vietnam again. Just thought I'd explain it all in clear and alternate wordings, because I can imagine that some of the jargon might be difficult to pick up in a second language.

I just love the opening of this song, that Scot-Irish style with the pipe sounds. The whole song is great but that opening gives me chills everytime I hear it.

agreed. i feel the same way in part because the scot-irish moved across the atlantic and settled in hillbilly mountain country (W Virginia, Kentucky) like they came from. nice to be able to appreciate your heritage and not be attacked for it as being not politically correct

@@texasrebelsoul1102 There's never anything wrong with celebrating your heritage. There had never been anything wrong with it. But what is wrong is insisting that yours is the best, your are or should be more superior than others because of that heritage, and others are subhuman, don't add or have anything of value, and shouldn't celebrate theirs.

This is the song that got me listening to Steve, probably good 20+ years and still a favorite. We as Southern folks are long known for storytelling at its best. Myself have sat on a couple porches in rocking chairs listening with crickets and cicadas tell their stories too. I'm 70.

I remember when this song came out. It was a monster, played on Rock and Country radio stations at the same time. That is a very rare thing and not often duplicated by anyone.

Also Poco, You better think twice and Grand Junction and Ozark Mountain Daredevils, If you want to get to Heaven. Enjoy and give me your opinion!

Yeah, it’s straight Outlaw Rock! I love to watch all the reactions from this amazing tune. People from every walks of life love it. Moonshine is just another part of our history, and the real stuff would only take a small bit and knock you down. I use to always keep some in my fridge with some fruit in it so it wouldn’t burn so bad going down. The real stuff will catch on fire, that’s how you know it’s real. Great tune. Will love it forever!

I have often called this "Celtic Rock". Another good one AC/DC "It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n roll". CELTIC ROCK....think about it. (and that's a hard "k", children, not a soft "s" pronunciation on Celtic!!! I don't give a damn what the Boston basketball team says!!!)
