81-test All Black and rugby commentator Justin Marshall joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport, sharing his thoughts on the All Blacks' shock 35-7 loss to the Springboks at Twickenham. It was New Zealand's worst-ever loss and came just two weeks before their opening match at the Rugby World Cup against hosts France.
Justin and Martin discuss how concerning the performance from the All Blacks was after they started the test season with four wins from four, their ability (or lack thereof) to adjust to their opposition, and more.

Sadly, the Bok fans are NOT necessarily humble. They can be as insufferable as the mob on The Breakdown... It's a game. Sometimes it's a win...sometimes it's a loss... THAT's what makes it so enjoyable!! (...even the ref craziness!!)

When you consider the last two All Black performances against the Wallabies and boks, the All blacks & coaching staff are failing to counter what both those sides learnt from the first games and what they would potentially bring to both return fixtures and look what happened? They sussed us out! Wallabies almost got us in Dunedin and the trouncing we just recieved. We rested on our laurels these last two games, we need to keep evolving and staying ahead to be more consistent. I see us making the semi's nothing more unfortunately.

Actually started 5 years ago already. The All Blacks didn't become weak all of a sudden. Two or three other sides simply became much better.

@@dantewalters5209 ....yep, the last year or two of Hansen's tenure they started losing it, Hansen wasn't innovative enough. Then for NZ Rugby to appoint (and reconfirm) the most incompetent coach has seen the All Blacks previous high standards of excellence disappear in the last 4 years. The All Blacks were always the innovators of world rugby and it always took a couple of years for other teams to catch up, by which time the All Blacks had moved on further. The current coach is not capable of innovating and even bringing in Ryan and Schmidt was never going to be enough. We can look forward to a winning coach from next year and we know what winners do....they tend to win !

@@dantewalters5209I think they did become weaker and a few teams became better. Combination of both really. Remember the AB side that would consistently win 90 to 100 percent of their games all retired. New players, new challenges

My pick is the slump started after RWC 2015. The ABs had a golden era under McCaw+Co. It was always going to suck when that team retired.

@@Blindside_Flanker I am South African. When the All Blacks were at their best, they always had a solid pack of forwards with tough loosies. They were never going to have a problem with quality backline players. Forward play has definitely deteriorated in New Zealand rugby. That is where teams like South Africa, Ireland and France have caught up and even surpassed you. Don't know if Razor will make a difference overnight, but I would suggest he builds a pack of forwards, before thinking of the razzle dazzle of a backline. You have been losing in the forwards, not the backline.

Remember the Box lost their opening game vs the All Blacks at the last World Cup, but things fell their way with other teams results wise and they won it. That’s sport, anything can happen. Looks like we are in for a few more upsets this WC.

I must agree with most of the comments I watched the breakdown and all complained about was the bunker. Correct if I am wrong was it that bunker was introduced for player welfare and rot out foul play

Justin makes a very big point. When New Zealand gave the Springboks a good slap in Auckland, the Springboks fought back and made a game of it in the second half. The All Blacks did nothing at Twickenham. There was no counter, not even fifteen minutes of fightback. Personally, I think the hype behind the AB's because of their Rugby Championship performance was over optimistic. Let's not forget they lost a test series in New Zealand after winning the opener. They lost three consecutive games in New Zealand. They lost four out of five games at one stage, and they gave up a 19-point lead in the closing ten minutes against an average England team. Even their win last year at Ellispark was not the usual AB performance. Their handling was not good that day, but they still managed to win. In fact the only two impressive performances the last thirteen months have been the test in Argentina and the Springbok test in Auckland. The AB's will always be a threat but I don't think they are as good at the moment as everybody seem to think. I still have serious doubt about their thight five, and they haven't played the likes of France and Ireland who, like the Springboks, have seriously good tight fives.

Just like the Boks had players that hadn't played for a while, at Mt Smart, and got thumped, so too the All Blacks had players who hadn't played for a while at Twickenham, and got thumped. Credit to the Boks for arranging a game the week before they played the All Blacks. They were battle hardened.

Justins Marshell is 100% about the other teams getting the blueprint for success against ABs, Buster Douglas did the same when he beat Mike Tyson.

our starting forward pack is very good. But our depth falls away after that. We need get Frizell,Retallick and Lomax back for the Quarterfinals. Realty is we are number four in the world. Days of small fetcher at open side are over. Our forwards need to be big and physical. They should picked Finau. Our loose forwards are too small. We need more height in the line outs.
