Our episode with Justin Townes Earle was scheduled to run next month. But after we heard about Earle's passing over the weekend, we decided to put it out sooner. It's a deeply sad conversation in some places - especially given his passing. However, it's also incredibly soulful, funny, and searching. And the performances, culled from Earle's last release, “The Saint of Lost Causes,” are brilliant. Bruce Headlam takes the reins this episode for what's turned out to be a fitting tribute to one of the great, dynamic young performers and songwriters that's now gone way too soon. Rest in peace, Justin Townes Earle [1982-2020].

Around the 29:00 mark I think Justin unknowingly talked about his final months. Please nobody beat me up for saying this...but I absolutely believe that COVID and it’s shutting down touring killed Justin Townes Earle. It’s been hard on every single one of us, but working musicians have been hit particularly hard. I think Justin without the road was a tragedy waiting to happen. Some birds aren’t meant to be caged. It very much reminds me of Townes’ verse “Living on the road my friend, was gonna keep you free and clean. But now you wear your skin like iron, and your breath as hard as kerosine”. He was an exceptionally honest and exceptionally talented man. He will be missed but he left a lot of great songs behind that will endure.

It's sad to know that there are people out there with such tortured souls, but I truly think it takes one of those tortured souls to make songs as good as Justin's were. @ Behavioral Health Group (BHG) runs the one and only methadone clinic in Nashville and they’ve got well over 1,000 patients dosing there now. Before the pandemic there used to be a line of over 100 patients waiting outside the door at 5:30 am every week day. I transferred from an excellent clinic in Decatur, Georgia and it took me a while to get used to the shit show. GA has over 75 clinics and plenty to choose from in the Atlanta metro. The only good thing about it is it really motivated me to pass my drug screens and get monthly take homes.

Justin's passing shouldn't surprise anyone. He loved being 'a tortured artist' and his early death was inevitable. He did a few really good songs-but basically he just wasted his life to drugs, turmoil and anger. He starts off mentioning Jeff Buckley. The nut doesn't fall far from the tree.
@johnc3429
@johnc3429 3 года назад
Surprised? No. But it's 2020 and by now we've established that addiction is a disease. So, he didn't "waste his life" anymore than someone with a tumor or someone with manic schizophrenia. He had a disease, tried a few times to get himself better, and in the longterm it ultimately didn't work. But, I don't see why you need to go for the "I told you so"
