In this Video, I look at the JVC CB-P5 Compact Video System.
This set comprises of the JVC HR-C3 (The first true VHS-C video recorder machine) which was launched to Market in or around 1982 and the JVC GZ-S5 Compact Video Camera which was launched to market in or around 1983.
Unless you were a true video enthusiast, these were more commonly found being used by journalists due to the compact nature of them.
Previous to this, journalists would have been using full size cameras connected to full size VHS recorders.
To use both pieces of equipment, you were required to connect the Camera to the Video Recorder. When you were ready, you would record what your camera was seeing directly onto the VHS-C video format.
Not a memory card in site!! :-)
If you would like to know more about the Video Recorder, please check out Total Rewind via the link below.

I would also recommend checking out HiFi Engine if you would like to find out more about the GZ-S5.

Another great video. Thanks very much! The Ferguson clone of this camera/recorder was my first video camera. I saved up my paper round money to get it. It was 7 years old at the time, and camcorders were the thing but it was what I could afford and I loved it. As you discovered it's the recorders that tend to fail with these setups, simply due to age mainly - but it leaves many working cameras orphaned. I can't remember if I mentioned before about this, but in order to bring these cameras back to life I built a little device to interface between these cameras (any with the 10 pin connector like yours, which is pretty much any old camera, consumer or professional) and a portable DVR device so I can use these cameras to record onto SD card. The quality is actually a moderate improvement as it's a digital capture of a camera feed, rather than a VHS recording, and all the imperfections that introduces. But the main advantage is that I don't have to lug around a weighty recorder (even the VHS-C ones are still bulky). I can mount everything on the shoe mount, and I modified the DVR devices I have to respond to the trigger signal from the camera so you can start/stop recordings from the camera button. On the issue of the trigger it seemed from the video that when you put the camera into record mode (rec+play) it started recording there and then. Is that right? It is supposed to go into standby mode (with pause lit) and then it's ready to start when you click the camera button. Did I miss something? Also Saticon refers to the Saticon tube used to capture the video within the camera - this is pre-CCD era camera and that's why it has that soft analogue look to it. Very, very bad in low light mind you!

Thanks for your response. I’d love to see the device which you have built. I’m curious now. I love that you saved up your paper round money to get your first unit. That’s a great story in itself. In regards to the recording, I also thought that when you hit play and record, it went into standby, but it just started recording. The trigger was the thing which stopped it. Maybe I needed to turn the lock on? Thanks for the Saticon info. That’s really interesting. I am going to see if I can manage to shoot something outside if I can get the battery to hold enough charge.

@asprinwizard

@@TheBrownjamez I'm afraid not. I don't have the time or materials to be able to fulfill such a thing. It took me over a year to do the first one and I've just finished a slightly more compact version (Mark 2), and hoping to do a mark 3 - smaller again and with a less capacious battery pack. I would however be happy to draw up a schematic of some kind and very happy to share my arduino sketch that handles the trigger pulses. But the system depends of modifying the PVRs too with 8 pin mini din sockets which I have purposed as my own proprietary connector. I'm hoping at some point that I might be allowed some time on this RU-vid channel to cover the device in a video.

Most of these camcorder work far better in bright light, granted the look is typical of 80s. Also setting the white balance will help. Nice set up! Be fun to use video like this in a project. There is a way of improving the picture quality and upscaling it. Love to see these camcorders used at least they are not in a bin or landfill.

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. I am going to see if I can get the batteries to hold a charge and if not, try and source a new battery. I'd love to take it outside and shoot. Camera's of this era were always 100% better shooting outside. The white balance was set, but it does struggle indoors. Any additional tips appreciated.

@@ReelFilm2016 You can get new batteries for camcorders around this age such as the JVC GR-C1, but that is still a popular camera due to it's Back to the Future connections so I'm not sure if they will have the ones you need available. Find the battery number and search eBay - don't buy any more original batteries though, they will all be unchargeable and you'll be wasting your money. What I did with my Betamovie batteries was to cut them open with a dremel and replace the old battery cells with modern 9.6 RC Car battery packs that fitted inside very well. You can also create a new battery pack using 18650 batteries and a battery protection board. Did this with my GR-C1 batteries and this worked well and can still be charged using the original charger (That actually left enough space in the battery casing for me to add an arduino and circuitry to handle the process of making the GR-C1 tapeless in a similar way as mentioned above - using the camera record trigger to operate a portable DVR device). Feel free to drop me an email if you want any more info on the DIY battery conversions.

@@asprinwizard Thanks for more useful information. I have had to buy a number of third party batteries for other camcorders, so if I can find one on eBay, I’ll try and get one. If I can’t find one, maybe I could send you one of the ones which are holding no charge and you could see if you can salvage it. What I’d really like, is to get the other VCR unit working again. I have kept a couple of older VHS-C cameras which are faulty in the hope they might have some working parts which can be used.

Thanks Adrian,I seem to remember people walking around with a camera and box over their shoulder, thought it was their lunch box at the time 😊😄 Yes, very nostalgic, and it's good to see how far we've come with video kit, should you keep it,don't know really, but would be interesting to see an out of doors video if you do decide to sell it,maybe a collectors video camera rather than a keeper, but's that for you to decide.Anyway interesting vid. Thanks

Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I would very much like to do a video outside, so that is the plan. I’ll have to charge the batteries again and get an accurate idea of how long they will last and try and do something outside. Ma6be when it gets a bit warmer.

Hello reel film, You made a great video, and thumbs up for that! I do have a question though, how did you get the unit to power on, were the battery packs still good? Or did you buy a new battery pack? If so, where did you buy it? I'm asking you this because I recently purchased a jvc hr-c3 with the same camera, but it seems that the battery packs of my unit are dead, and I cant find another one, so I'm very interested in how you managed to send power to it! Greetings from Holland!

Thanks for watching and commenting. So in the video, when I’m unpacking the box, you should hear me mention that one is a power unit which you see me attach to the unit. Basically a big brick with a plug. The model no. For that is AC-P3EG. I also have the charging units for the batteries. Amazingly they still hold a charge but barely. I have looked at sourcing new battery so that I can use it outside but they don’t appear to exist. Someone has reached out to me and has offered to support me build one. Let me know if you are successful in getting a power unit.

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. These cameras were made to be used in conjunction with the VCR units. There is no other way to record what you are filming. I suppose, if you are technically minded, you could build a unit which could receive the units output and maybe you could record to a memory card?
