I recently held an informal comparison between the JVC RS2100 (NZ7) and Epson LS12000 for eight HT enthusiast in the KC area, and this video comparison series will document some of what we saw. The projector comparison was made with each projector in the mode how I use them individually (generally reflective of how the respective owners threads recommend setting each projector up optimally), and splitting a 144” cinema scope Seymour XD screen left and right. More information on that comparison with a summary of all the attendees thoughts can be found here:
www.avsforum.c...
Also, the specific settings I am using on the Epson LS12000 for dynamic mode are listed in that first post of the link above.

Really great comparison. Both of them look really good. The Epson would meet the needs of 99% of users with enough left over to buy a processor and a very good amp.

Some great info there. I have that same Brave poster I got at the KC AMC Barrywoods back in 2012 or something at the Atmos premiere there. Swear I seen ya there.

We went with a small group from the avsforum crowd to the premier of Brave at AMC! There was a Dolby Rep who was handing out he posters and gave a brief overview of what Atmos was and what to listen for, a few minutes before the movie. It's had a special place therefore - since I love Dolby Atmos and that was the first content I ever heard in the format! If you were there too - what a coincidence!!!

@@jvonengeln Yep that was it! My wife and I were setting a few rows behind your group. First time hearing the format too. Was really special having the Dolby rep there. We’ve gone back to that theater 4-5 times since. We are from Hays KS.

Epson is an eshift projector JVC is a native projector which is why it’s more expensive. Comparing apples and oranges IMO.

@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln Год назад
There are some guys on AVSforum who have tested different HDMI cable sync time and proport there are differences, but I think generally speaking the Epson's HDMI lock time is still slower than the JVC in my experience.

The Epson looks amazing, but the JVC looks as lot more natural colors out of the box!
@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln 11 месяцев назад
That’s true when comparing JVC filmaker mode to Epson dynamic mode, but Epson Cinema mode is very color accurate out of the box. Sadly, and for unknown reasons - only Dynamic mode on the Epson has the full fade to black and aggressive laser dimming. So all LS12000 users should be using a color tamed Dynamic picture mode to get that better laser dimming performance.

Hi, I haven't done the firmware update on my JVC nz7 yet but I will this week. I was wondering if the new settings made the projector any brighter and helped with the black levels at all... Was wondering what your opinion was. Thanks Nick I'm still enjoying my nz7 on a dragonfly 135" screen

Do you know if the lock time difference stays around the same when using other sources, say a Nvidia Shield or Roku? Or with different processors or direct to the pj? Sorry for all the questions, testing things is my nature and just wondering if there are things that make it better or worse.
@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln Год назад
yeah - the different processors haven't really changed the picture much to my eyes. I've tried Roku, Apple 4K TV, Firestick. They are just different gui's but content seems to look about the same to me.

Hey Jonathan, Can I ask you again what you thought of the firmware update on the JVC nz7. I'm in a wheelchair and the company I'm dealing with is going to install the update for me this weekend. I have my lamp on high right now and the big difference for me was when I switched from auto to HDR+1. I got a huge pop in contrast and the picture just popped vs looking flat. You had that scale from -2 to +2. I think my black levels are very good right now but I was wondering if you noticed any difference with the new 2.0..... I've heard people say it really brightened their image and you had the new dynamic control for helping black levels Did it make a difference for you? Thanks, Nick Keep up the great content with youthman! Ps Being paralyzed, it means a great deal to me and my family enjoying 2 hrs just to get away from it all .. I have a Klipsch premier 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos system with a Marantz 7015. I have a 2ch amp for a pair of my ceiling mounted Atmos speakers at the moment. My friend is getting me a 5ch amplifier for the front stage and I'll use the Marantz for the rest. I went from a 120" screen to a 135" as my friend recommended. What a huge difference that made for me. I truly feel that the picture I'm getting in my basement can rival most theaters I've been in. I did watch Avatar (Blu-ray) and thoroughly enjoyed it before going to see the latest one in 3d. I can't wait to see it in 2d on my screen. The advancement in technology is incredible! I'm curious to see how it will look on Disney streaming... I just can't recommend streaming content over the physical media, especially when it comes to the audio. I don't have the money for kaleidescope as that would definitely be down here in the theater. I loved how you put together your system... Very interesting.. Nick

I missed this Nick - glad you are enjoying your projector! Yes get that Nov. firmware applied and see if you like the new laser dimming mode three or auto-wide HDR settings. I personally probably do not prefer those new settings, but they are different and therefore worth evaluating and deciding on your personal preference. I find that auto-wide makes things too bright, and I find that mode three doesn't get dark enough - but if you were fighting for extra brightness before it might be a leg up!
@nhernan156
@nhernan156 Год назад
@@jvonengeln Thanks so much for getting back to me. I could use a little more brightness but hope I can maintain my black levels... So far I've made adjustments on my projector based on my personal preference. I'm not one that likes a very warm look so I've been using it on 7500k... Thanks so much for getting back to me. I do love my picture on my 135" screen. It's too bad I can't afford kaleidescope but that's just too expensive. Keep up the great work and thanks again. Nick

Is the epson trike 4k or is it still pixel shifting? Thanks for the great stuff
@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln Год назад
4 way pixel shift on a 1080p panel. 480Hz pixel shift. 120Hz each wobble of pixel grid. So true 4K pixel showing, just not all at once. It looks as good as native 4K with real world content.

If you use an HDFury Vrroom to tell the projector that the AppleTV source is always 4K HDR, would that negate the switching costs even though you’re matching frame rate?
@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln Год назад
You can do that without a HDFury. The Apple 4K TV alone can do it. You can force HDR10+ on the 2022 edition or HDR on the 2021 edition and you won’t have any switching times. Of course you are then reliant on the apps conversion of SDR to HDR, which mostly works good, but not perfect.

The JVC looks yellow? How are the black levels?
@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln 8 месяцев назад
Black levels with dim dark content are better on the JVC because the black floor is lower on LCOS panels than LCD panels. However. intrascene contrast (that is when both very bright and very dark are on the screen at the same time, then the Epson is better because it has objectively better intrascene contrast numbers. You can see this in my video if you watch specifically for it.
@georgepopescu1327
@georgepopescu1327 5 месяцев назад
@@jvonengeln theoretically you can find an NZ 7 sample with good ANSI contrast but it depends on the sample as JVC is notorious for having problems with quality control, thus you can have one sample projector with great overall contrast and sharpness and other with mediocre or plain bad. I was hoping this issue will go away with the new lasers but it seems it didn't. You could send back JVC projectors untill you recive a good sample but you could also get blacklisted for this.

I had an Epson 5040 and now have a 6050. The HDR is far better with the 50 then the 40. It was absolutely unwatchable on the 40.

HDR performance on older Epsons stinks. I had to turn it off on my 5040UB. I like HDR performance on the LS12000 and mostly leave it on (instead of down converting with various means to SDR like I had to with my 5040UB)
