Inspired by the recent events on Maunakea, some of Hawaiʻi’s most notable and accomplished recording artists and composers joined their voices to record “Kū Haʻaheo E Kuʻu Hawaiʻi.” Composed by Hinaleimoana Wong, this mele has become a rallying call for our lāhui to aloha ʻāina.
“Kū Haʻaheo” will be included on a soon to be released album entitled “Kūhaʻo Maunakea” - a compilation featuring 18 new compositions documenting the events and swell of Hawaiian community unity around aloha ʻāina associated with the Kū Kiaʻi Mauna movement.
The album will be available digitally through iTunes in late September and 100% of all sales will be donated to the Hawaiian Unity and Liberation Institute (HULI), which provides logistical support to the protectors on the frontline of Maunakea. Donations to HULI can be made at actionnetwork.....
Lyrics & Translation
Kū Haʻaheo E Kuʻu Hawaiʻi
by Hinaleimoana Wong
Kaiko’o ka moana kā i lana nei Hawai’i
Nāueue a hālulu ka honua a Haumea
Nākulukulu e ka lani ki’eki’e kau mai i luna
Auē ke aloha ‘ole a ka malihini
*Ho’ōho:
Kū ha’aheo e ku’u Hawai’i
Mamaka kaua o ku’u ‘āina
‘O ke ehu kakahiaka o nā ‘ōiwi o Hawai’i nei
No ku’u lahui e hā’awi pau a i ola mau
Auhea wale ‘oukou pū’ali koa o Keawe
Me ko Kamalālāwalu la me Kākuhihewa
‘Alu mai pualu mai me ko Manokalanipō
Ka’i mai ana me nā kama a Kahelelani
E nāue imua e nā poki’i a e inu wai ‘awa’awa
E wiwo’ole a ho’okūpa’a ‘a’ohe hope e ho’i mai ai

Translation
The sea of Hawai’i surges in turmoil
The earth of Haumea rumbles and shakes
The highest heavens shudder up above
Alas! Woeful indeed are the heartless foreigners
*Stand tall my Hawai’i
Band of warriors of my land
The new dawn for our people of Hawai’i is upon us
For my nation I give my all so that our legacy lives on
Where are you soldiers of Keawe
Along with those of Maui and O’ahu
Unite, join together with those of Kaua’i
Marching alongside the descendants of Ni’ihau
Move forward young ones and drink of the bitter waters
Be fearless, steadfast for there is no turning back
Let’s press onward straight on the path of victory
Alas! Woeful are the heartless foreigners!
Be honored always oh beloved descendants of the land
Let us wear the honored ‘a’ali’i of our beloved land
Paddle on in our pursuit of civil justice
Until our dignity and independence is restored

I come from a people of lost heritage for I am African American. In most cases, it is impossible to know of our native ancestors and traditions, which is why I feel deeply for indigenous people, but especially those in the paradise of your native land, Hawaii. My son, who is now deceased, lived in Honolulu for two years. When he returned home, he spoke of the beauty there, an in Maui. The native people welcomed him as they opened their heart to Him. As a mother, I cannot put into words how much that meant to me. It is my dream to trod where he once was, and to meet the wonderful people of Hawaii. When I discovered this video, I broke into tears. How my heart weeps for your struggle not to loose your unique identity. Though I don’t know your language, but I feel from my core, you proudly sing of who you are as a people, and your beautiful land-and once again I cry like a baby. May you keep up the fight; please never give up, for the Creator made you to be just as you are-a beautiful people.

The pure emotion in the room. I may not be a native Hawaiian. I always try to learn the meaning of the song and try to translate the song. I know that it’s been a while since my visit to Hawaii. But it’s sad that you have to reclaim the land of your ancestors due to ignorance of others. I applaud and appreciate that you honor your ancestors, and honor every thing around you including life.

Hello~ i moved to korea 4 years ago. I don’t know why, but I was shuffling my music and came across this song that once again brought me to tears. I think the emotion is nostalgia. I only know a few singers here, but relistening after many years, I hear the hearts of everyone. My 2024 goal is to be able to sing the whole song and understand the words by heart. I am not kanaka, but hawaii is my home and this is a song I had the privilege long ago to learn at least the first verse and chorus and stand by kanaka with mele and kahea. I hope everyone is well and has the strength to keep moving forward. Mahalo nui loa~

I just heard this mele for the first time today, just had RU-vid playing music for my son to go to sleep, and this song came on, wasn’t really paying attention until it hit me that they are chanting a mele, and instantly the pain of my ancestors crept in. I immediately replayed the song and by the end of it was chanting along crying. We will live and if need be die as Hawaiians. Onipa’a Kakou ✊🏽

For the 473 of you haters... Why come on here just to dislike it? You dont even know how much this song means to us Hawaiians. You just think that it's just a "normal song" when it isn't.

I got a feeling my people will not like this but here i go . To my people i tear as i write this we dont deserve our land . We as a people need to fix ourselves first . We want , we want , yes it was stolen . If we get the land now we would be no better then the government that took our land in the first place . We as hawaiians cant even treat our brothers , sisters , tutus , papas , mothers n fathers with the aloha that they deserve . We think we can malama ka aina ? The hawaiian people need to heal them self first . Born and raised on the island of oahu , hawaiian blood runs through my veins and proudly

Aloha brothers and sisters, I always cry when I listen to this amazing Mele, it always touches my heart, but it also gives me strength and reminds me that we All should fight to protect sacred sites to all indigenous/native nations all over the islands and world. Let's keep chanting and sending our prayers to the creator. Mahalo Nui E Ke Aloha for such amazing creation and interpretation.

I live in California. I love Hawaii and Hawaiian music. I’m a country music fan but I will listen to any genre of music. I’m a musician. I went on a trip to Hawaii in 2012. The Hawaiian language of Hawaii is so awesome. Hawaii is my number one favorite island place in The Pacific Ocean. I support the Native Hawaiian people of Hawaii, their culture, customs, language, and religion. I love watching history of Hawaii documentary films on RU-vid. My favorite Native Hawaiian musician from Hawaii is “Israel Kamakawiwo’ole,” or IZ. I listen to IZ and his music all the time.
