For all those who don't understand: The person who originally wrote K-9 into the series back in the 70s and holds the rights for K-9 refused the BBC to use K-9 as more than a secondary character, hence he buggered off to Oxford in the Sarah Jane Adventures. He went to DisneyXD (when they were still Jetix) and created a new series. HOWEVER they can't actually reference the Doctor Who universe because they only have the rights to K-9.
This is K-9 Mark I. Mark II is with Romana in E-Space, Mark III blew up in School Reunion and Mark IV was in SJA. And K-9 is a registered trademark of Bob Baker and Dave Martin. Don't know why I've got that memorized...
The Disney Channel had NOTHING TO DO WITH MAKING THIS. Blaming Disney on this is like blaming SyFy on Series 2 of Doctor Who. "But they aired it, so any faults can be blamed directly on them!!!"
Mark I was built by a human in the 51st century, while Mark II was built by the Doctor with a few 'extras'; with that in mind, it seems more likely that the regeneration feature was added by the Doctor when he was making the second model
Well, "teleporting" maybe isn't the right word there. "Temporal Shift" might work, for lack of a better term...although I'm fairly certain K-9 wasn't equipped with that kind of technology...
Firstly, K9 Mark I has been specifically confirmed as having been destroyed in the audio "Gallifrey: Imperiatrix", and secondly, given the sheer complexity of that technology- coupled with the fact that they regenerate themselves- it makes FAR more sense for that feature to have been added by Romana to her K9 unit
I actually liked this series and I'm a massive Whovian. I found that K9 got a hold of a personality after a few episodes (just like the doctor when he adapts to his new body after regenerating). The characters were likeable at best. And there is a few tiny nods to Who in some episodes, that only Whovians would know due to the fact it's unmentionable in this series (like a bit of the theme when Gryffen messes with his circuits and the episode where the aliens think K9 is God talks about his history briefly). I would have loved a season 2, but unfortunately majority rules and also the actor who plays Starkey is now in please like me.
WALL-E Lover Well I think one of the really good things about Doctor Who is how British it is. I am not saying if an American made it , it would be terrible but I think it is in safer hands with the British. Just look at the 1996 movie , that was good but I wouldn't want to see anymore of it.
I like to think that, centuries later, Professor Marius was researching the old historical records of Professor Gryffen and "The Department," and was sufficiently inspired to design and build a robot dog to help him at his new assignment in the asteroid belt.
Marcus Tsang yes he does he's made by the doctor he calls the doctor master and then k9mk2 made by the doctor still calls him master k9 mark3 in DOCTOR WHO:school reunion k9 still calls the doctor master
Oh, everyone get over yourselves. The truth is that this series isn't half bad, but because it's so different everyone has decided to hate it. Let's make one thing clear: Just because Disney aired it DOES NOT mean that they made it. It was made by an Australian company or three, and it was all Bob Baker's idea and production. And if you have no idea who that is and you think RTD invented K9, you really have no room to complain about the misuse of K9 in any manor.
I see they kiddie-fied him. He'd be alright but the new flying and change in how the actor talks for him, ruins whatever potential this version had. I call it K9 the Unmentionable One.
Well, according to the "Gallifrey" audio series Mark I was destroyed during a Gallifreyian civil war, but Mark II was still alive when last seen, so it's possible that he somehow survived Gallifrey's destruction (Particularly since we have audio evidence of the Fourth Doctor's past compaion Leela- last seen on Gallifrey herself- having survived the war as well)
This was such a terrible idea for a K-9 spin-off. The regeneration in particular was just terrible, both in execution, and even in concept. I could tolerate K9 being able to repair himself autonomously, using technologies pilfered from wherever he was at the time, perhaps using some form of nano-machine tech that would facilitate such. I would like to see a future Dr. Who episode featuring a K-9 unit that had put itself through multiple self-repairs as such, finally ended up in a configuration more like what was intended for the original which was supposed to be a robotic quadrupedal Dobermann-type dog (which at the time was simply beyond the budget and ability of the year 1977). CGI and practical robotics could easily do that now.
@Thunderpuddle I've seen all the episodes, and in the second one, the professor is probing K9's memories, and that familiar da da daaaaaaa popped up for a few seconds that begins the theme to Doctor Who. I think it holds with continuity nicely. Just wish the show had lasted longer. Would have been even better if BBC had picked it up.
Man, this is BAD! Lately the shows coming from Disney really stunk, but this is really up there on the Stink factor. May the Doctor come after Disney for this one
Ahh yes, but one could argue that the Time Lords added a regeneration feature. Leela was married to one in the security council after all. it's all conjecture anyway. I don't think we're ever going to get a definitive answer due to legal reasons. XD My only hope is that this show means we'd get a Character Options K-9 that fits in with the Doctor Who figure range XD
Okay people. A. This show was licensed by BBC. They gave permission, etc, it's all legal and the paperwork was all done. B. Jetix is owned by Disney, but that does not mean Disney has any direct creative control over this show. Disney Channel will still make their various crap and have no influence on this. C. John Leeson is the voice of K-9. D. The show was written with a younger audience in mind than the existing Who shows. E. Stop writing it off cause you see 'disney'. Give it a chance.
@MECHARIOLU141 That was K9 Mark IV who went to University with Luke, this K9 is the first one, it's why it was even able to regenerate in the first place
This is the first K9 there have been four K9s in doctor who so far the one in this series once belonged to the doctor but i guess he has forgotten his memory of that time
Omitting the Doctor completely was a mistake, methinks (other Spin-Offs still took Doctor Who into canon, by at least refering to him occasionally). The redesign is fine, but should've remained smooth, like the original 4 K9s did. All-in-all it looks like K-9 was away from Gallifrey, accidentally fell through a plothole in Time and Space and ended up in some sort of Mickey Mouse reality.
K-9 can fly. Huh. That's weird. But it's neat. Also I don't think this aired on Disney XD in USA and this aired there so don't blame Disney at all. Oh, and if there's one thing I can say, it's that DISNEY ONLY AIRED THIS!!!! THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MAKING OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe, maybe not, but the fact remains that we have an at least semi-canonical account of K9 Mark I being destroyed in the Gallifreyian Civil War between Romana and Pandora while Mark II, as far as I know, is still intact and was actually last seen in the TARDIS with the Eighth Doctor ("The Gallifrey Chronicles"); there are no circumstances under which it doesn't make a LOT more sense for this K9 to be Mark II rather than Mark I
Guys, this series is owned by the creators of K-9 (the people who first thought him up for the Doctor Who), the character was created by Bob Baker, to whom rights to the character still belong; consequently, Baker's spin-off series K-9, which is not BBC-produced, cannot directly reference events or characters from Doctor Who, though it attempts to be a part of that continuity. John Leeson does not own K-9 or the rights to it, but did the voice and still does the voice in this new series.
Actually, the implication is that this is a 'regenerated' version of K9 Mark II; Mark III/IV is with Sarah- he's an upgraded model with Mark III's memories; doesn't seem quite right just calling Sarah's version Mark IV-, and Mark I was destroyed during a civil war on Gallifrey, but Mark II was still alive at the conclusion according to all reports
@RhysHammy While I agree with you, Sarah Jane has K9 Mark IV. The K9 in this show is K9 Mark I, who was owned by Leela when she left the Doctor on Gallifrey in The Invasion of Time. I really dont understand how a robot dog can regenerate, though....
@daleksvscybermen I don't know exactly, i heard they used the original prop from the 70's in the New Doctor Who series and SJA. Apparently there's a few minor differences between the original 70s K9 and the one in SJA so they made the original K9 in here look like the one from the 70s though i don't know if it's the same prop.
There's 4 K-9s (3 Really). Mark I is this one, which was Supposed to be with Leela. Mark II is Romana's. Mark III Is Sarah Jane's But Dies and the Doctor Re-builds him but this time with the Same Memories creating Mark IV, which really Became Luke's eventually.
This could be K-9 Mark1 still. If he was actually the one that was with Leela then that could explain the whole "regeneration" thing. Time Lord technology.
After years of playing second fiddle, everybody's favorite robot dog gets his own show and what's first thing he does? Kills the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
This is literally a rip-off of School Reunion - K-9 arrives, fires lasers at the monsters, runs out of power, heroically blows himself up, then get's put back together. I mean, that one guy even looks like Anthony Head (well when he was in Buffy but still).
Because the 'regeneration' feature was presumably added by Romana when K9 returned to Gallifrey with her; Mark III was built in private by the Doctor and susbequently sent to Earth for Sarah, so he never had the chance to get that regeneration feature added
Viacom owns Nickolodean. Nickolodean bought the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from The Mirage Group. I hope either Viacom or Nickoldean sues Disney.
All my neice, nephew, and I do is watch Doctor Who, and they love K-9 from the series 2 episode "School Reunion" I literally just found out about this spin-off. Will the younger folk who only know K-9 from the rebooted DW enjoy this?
@RhysHammy sadly it is john leeson but instead of going with the original voice, they had him record lines in his k-9 voice then altered it so it sounded more technological
For those taking issue with a flying K-9, in truth he was always "flying" - or, more accurately, hovering just above the ground. Show me where he is ever shown or described as having wheels, please.
I'm a bit sadder now, knowing this exists. Watching season 17 of Doctor Who right now, and having a hard time coping with the voice change for K9. And now this. Negative. Negative. Negative. Negative. Negative.
