Hi guys. I'm the builder of K-9. Thanks again to Dave for inviting me to talk about my tin dog. It was great working with him. The Dallas Makerspace is also very impressive and I met some great people there.
I think your replica may be an improvement over the original. However, this is coming from someone who never watched the classic series, and only a tiny amount of the modern series.
As a girl watching original Doctor Who I built a full size K9 out of cardboard, tin foil and sticky back plastic. It didn't last long but loved it to death.
40 years has led up to this, a near-autonomous replica of a _Dr. Who_ robot. I am ashamed to admit that I never watched much of the show, but what a time to be alive.
this is just a wooden toy in comparison with modern robots, at this point they only need a more advanced AI and another way to power them since using conventional batteries is a big limitation.
Doctor Who is kind of one of those shows that you either like or hate it. There is no middle ground. Yet for a series spanning over 50 years and 14 different Doctors. Also having some rather long lasting drawn-out jokes that a lot the younger generations who like the series never realized how old some jokes are. Yet say. If you at least have a small enjoyment of Sci-Fi. I suggest at least watching one or two episodes. Though best go as early as you can. Even if somethings are corny or silly (Like that of the 60s running). Got to stick with it. As they are rather classical in the way they present Sci-Fi and other things.
As a teen I had a dog and it had puppies a couple of times. It used to be afraid of vac cleaner, I tried to train dog with it, useless. But one of her puppies was a very brave one, he attacked vac every time I turned it on. So, not all of the animals are afraid of tech devices.
K-9 has also appeared twice since the revival of the show: "School Reunion" and "Journey's End"; as well as on the spin-off _The Sarah Jane Adventures_ .
Wow! I remember building my half scale Dalek back in 2002 using an old Roomba, a garbage can, and styrofoam balls cut in half. Essentially the same things the prop department used back when Tom Baker was The Doctor. It's blaster consisted of an automatic airsoft gun mounted with it's barrel inside some plastic to hide the wires for the LEDs I used to illuminate the acrylic rings at the end. I really wish I still had it but it was destroyed in a storage unit fire back in 2007. At some point in the near future when I have the time and money I'll build another one. Ironically it will likely cost less than half what the original did considering the advancements in cheap single board computers and pre-mounted microcontrollers in the form of Arduino. I'll be sure to send you a message when/if I get started on it.
I always love when you bring guests on the show. Fitz seems like a really great guy and I'm glad you were able to check out this awesome K-9 replica he made.
Tom Baker was my first Dr. Who and always wanted a K9, he's pretty big life sized. You have some scaredy animals, I've seen a cat just lay there as an RC monster truck drove over it. ;)
This. Is. AMAZING! Bless you Fitz for making him! Fitz for the next Doctor! (actually, if they hired you, they might've saved some money on the props department) Kudos for the 8-Bit Guy for showing K9 to us!
ah yes k-9, was a popuar lil dog to start with but got a bit annoying and was only used as a side person, in the 80's the doctors newer side kick serah jane smith got k-9 and a spinn off was made, sadly it failed to get any more popuar, then in 2007 with the new doctor who show came the serah jane files, which had k-9 in them only until the 4th season when luke went to uni and was given k-9,
Excellent and cute. The original one is from the year I was born. That retro computer meet up looked really cool. Also, I could do with a new Commodore 64 game. :)
I thought pre-Christopher Eccleston Dr Who was unknown in America. My Doctor Who was Peter Davison, who was also in a Sunday evening show about a vet and played various bit parts in the TV version of Hitchhiker's Guide.
The most surprising thing in this video was 9:43. This guy has blue eyes. I've never seen a black person with blue eyes. Cool! The K-9 was pretty cool too, I suppose :P
Doctor Who is British sci fi . so sadly K-9 is not as well known as the American star wars R2-D2. as Boston Dynamics has now changed robotics forever. any sci fi robot with wheels only, is seen as obsolete, without a leg to stand on nowadays! yawn. however this is one of the best Replicas of the 70s sci fi robot K9 I have seen. building a full sized K-9 or R2-D2 or Class B-9-M-3 is now achievable. a Dalek is a used show ride bumper car with added...
8bitguy as a teenager i love restoring old computering stuff. I am 14 years old and i am the only kid in the school which love retro computers. very good videos
here on Dutch TV it was aired around 7 PM and then it got cancelled cause parents complained their kids had nightmares. I was a kid too and was a bit scared too.
