Gakja reached the height of its development and popularity at Buddhist temples, with the creation of the Mugujeonggwang Daedaranigyeong (The Great Dharani Sutra), known as the oldest woodblock printed text, in the Silla period and the Palman Daejanggyeong (Tripiṭaka Koreana), a collection of wooden printing blocks recognized for its excellence. The printing techniques continued to be passed on, and many woodblock prints, including the original copy of Hunminjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People), were published during the Joseon Dynasty as well.
This video presents the sounds produced by gakjajang, artisans who engraved woodblocks for printing among other works. We hope you enjoy watching their marvelous work in this full ASMR version. [Featuring Kim Gak-han, a master of gakjajang (National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 106)]
