When Leonard Cohen heard KD Lang sing his song in 2006, he said the song can be laid to rest now “because it’s been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection”. He was very proud of KD’s version. Thanks for a great reaction to KD Lang. She has the voice of an angel. 👏👏🇨🇦
And also what needs to be said is that Leonard Cohen's body of work is so much more than Hallelujah...please explore, you won't be disappointed! Hello (also) to all the KD fans, the best
She is a rare phenomenon - the beauty of her voice - there is just so much that can’t be defined except k.d. is a gift. Yet she is underrated. However, those of us who are blown away by her, we know how exceptional she is. Her voice has made me weep more than once. She’s a beautiful soul.
I remember watching her sing this live at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and it was stunning to hear the breath leave the lungs of the 60,000 people in the stadium when she started into this. To say this performance was magical isn't doing it justice.
An interesting fact on K.D’s 2010 Vancouver Olympics performance, she declined to complete her soundcheck and pre-show rehearsal. She is so incredibly confident in her abilities she didn’t need either, and you can hear that confidence in every note she gives the audience . She’s sings in such a way that her audience gets this amazing build up until she unleashes her full power and you are left in awe. She is one of our under appreciate Canadian treasures.
K.D. is know for wanting to "save her voice " leading up to big performances. Going as far to only speaking in a whisper for days before. I believe the Opening Ceremony had a whole week at BC Place for full show rehearsal. So K.D.'s mic levels would have been set early in on. She probably spent most of the rehearsals just getting used to the elevated stage she was going to be on and just let a recording be played while she was walking through her spot.
I’m about 5 seconds into watching your reaction and already I’m thinking “just wait, bud. Just wait…” 😂 I’ve seen her perform this song live twice and the audience can barely breathe. She fills your every sense. And this performance was in a sports stadium, bear in mind. Not a concert hall. “God sent voice.” Yep 👍
that is what I do too on some of these reaction videos, ....just wait pal, it gets REALLY good a bit later. On songs like this and the Righteous Brothers, Bobby Hatfield live versions of Unchained Melody and Summertime.
I saw her sing it live once and I too forgot to breathe. The whole audience kind of remembered to breathe at the end and then they all stood up and lost their minds, in the middle of the concert.
We live in Vancouver and we’re watching the opening ceremonies live. I’ve loved kd for years, but I was blown away by this performance. I still cry every time I watch it, it is breathtaking.
I can only imagine. Such a mix of emotions given the tragedy only hours earlier. Out here in Ontario, we were devastated by the news. We decided as a family to see how the committee would handle such a heartbreaking start to those Olympics. Her performance, along with one of THE most amazing opening ceremonies I've ever seen, made us proud to be Canadian. I do believe I've found my song when my time comes. Thank you. Merci. Mr. Cohen & Ms. K.D. @@joygernautm6641
Not bad for a gal from Consort Alberta, a farm girl we had the thrill of listening to her as she developed her skill, we Canadians are super proud of our performers from our great country
One of the best and one of the most underrated, female vocalists ever you have to see a very young k.d. lang on the Tonight Show singing three cigarettes in an ashtray you’ll never forget it
Johnny Carson turned to the audience with a gobsmacked look on his face and said, “that little girl can sing.” I cracked up. I don’t know if any Canadian (except maybe her mom) has ever thought of k.d as a “little girl.” But yeah, she could sing 👍😂
This is as close to perfection as you will ever get. I watched it live during the Olympics on TV with my mouth wide open. I truly envy the people who were in that building listening to this performance.
I've loved KD Lang since I was little, and seeing others fall in love with her voice is so amazing. Constant Craving was my soothing song as a little kid when I always turn to KD when I need to feel my feelings, feel comforted etc. She's a treasure
No screeching, no harsh forced dip and hit high notes, no autotune crap she is pure talent and beauty and skill. Most the current singers female or male just do lazy or OK singing but they mass market themselves well and we acquiesces. That is the joy of your channel, it introduces us to new songs/artist and makes us look at well know sings/artist through another's eyes.
I never get tired of hearing that song. From her. This stage makes it even better. That tiny person on that stage in front of all those people. And their all so quiet. Amazing.
I watched this live that night and I think she took us to church because an athlete was killed that morning during a practice run on a bobsled. It was so powerful coming from her.
First time i saw her she was country punk and not a country fan she blew me away and i was hooked xxx im 67 today and im still hooked, she is Canadas National Treasure xxxxx
She has a phenomenal voice. I will always remember her performance at the 2010 Olympics which brought so much emotion and tears. It was a very proud to be Canadian moment.
She in my book the best female vocalist of the last 30-40 years before her equally amazing Karen Carpenter Honorable mention: Linda Ronstadt / Whitney Huston ......
yeah, this is one of my favorite performances of all time. it's really powerful. she puts her own spin on this version. i can't watch this performance enough. glad u like it too.
This version, this performance of this song is THE best "Hallelujah". My bf and I still talk about it every time this song comes up. It's literally unforgettable.
I love your reaction she is wonderful isn't she. We are so proud of her I listen to her every night before bed. In my 60 years I am blessed to hear the most beautiful voice.🇨🇦❤
When KD Lang sang it in Australia it was SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL.!!!! Brilliant! ! I Dare you to listen to that version without goosebumps and it could bring you to tears! She is the BEST FEMALE SINGER of our Generation! Surpasses Celine Dion and Streisand by a mile! She is a powerhouse!! I think it was Melbourne- 0:00 🇹🇫look it up!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Canada has one Hell of an entertainer!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I heard KD back in the late 90s early 20s and listened to her on the radio. Bought her tapes!! Tapes I say!! Thank you I haven’t heard from her in along time. Thanks.
Hey, I got married in BANFF HOTEL 30 yrs ago, spent a week in Vancouver. We loved it so much. And this song is wonderful i love her work w/ Roy Orbison.,too.
Upon hearing KD Lang sing "Hallelujah", Leonard Cohen who wrote the song said that it was her song from that point on...her performance of the song at the 2005 Juno Awards in Winnipeg is intimate, powerful, and an emotional tour de force...
@coinneachmaclellan3121 That Juno performance was the first time I heard her sing this. I watched it with my best friend who had already told me to check out her album with this on it. Her performance was so stunningly beautiful that it actually brought tears to my eyes. At the end I turned to my friend, speechless, and simply pointed at the tears on my face. He said "I TOLD you, check out that album!". 😄
Remember this was in an arena with 50-60k excited fans. These opening ceremonies were fabulous but there was a sombre feeling that day as a Georgian luger was killed on a practice run. The silence to let her sing was awesome.
Thanks again, Pat… I’d definitely recommend K.D.’s rendition(s) of Roy Orbison’s song “CRYING”. Like I mentioned, there’s at least one live rendition of them performing it together, as well as the studio/MV, of course. And then lots of renditions of K.D. performing the song w/o Roy since his passing.
Now that's what I call interpreting the music. Watch her performance at the juno awards, when she wasn't outside in the cold air. She was even freer if you can believe it.
You had one of the most awesome reactions to this song. You actually showed your appreciation for a vocalist and how their voices are an instrument. That is why most people don't understand opera, they believe it is only for the elitists, but if you really truly love vocals as an instrument...Opera can leave you absolutely drained of emotion. Most people want the music to move them, but a voice, a single voice can move you just as much...May you stay safe and supported along your path.
Aloha! If you listened to country music, you would have heard her! Once you hear KD’s voice, you’d recognize it right off; her voice was that unique! I loved her back then and I was finishing high school when she became popular! Live from Hawaii
kd also, I'm sure, controls the number of beats in her vibrato. She is and has been, incredible for a long time. Thank you for reviewing this, one of her most fascinating versions of the song. But her technical control is matched by her emotional power and expression. I've been listening to this song for years and I still tear up.
Another great song that K.D. did was a duet with Roy Orbison. They sang "Crying" together. Amazing! Other Canadian singers you may be interested in are: Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Burton Cummings, The Guess Who, Stan Rogers, Rita McNeil, Sarah McLaughlan, Tom Jackson, Buffy Ste. Marie, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Geddy Lee and Rush and many, many more.
How fucking dare Google to stick an ad in the middle of this song. Nothing is sacred to them I guess. Had the extreme pleasure of seeing KD twice, but neither time did she perform this. Loved your reaction, this song really gets inside you.
Also Gordon, Sarah, Alanis, Bruce, Joni, most of The Band, the Magarriles(sp), Randy Bachman, the Guess Who, etc, etc, grew up in the US and these artists were everywhere in the 60’s-2000’s.
Leonard Cohen sings his Masterpiece Hallelujah in London! Check it out ! After all he is the Author of Hallelujah and he sings more verses! It is said there are 15 verses but have never found them! He has a superior voice! He has written Many songs and is a Masterful Poet!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🙋🏻♀️
k.d. lang is just amazing and her rendition of this song, is the absolute best one out there. No one else even comes close. k.d. is an league all of her own. I love her voice.
Great reaction.. I was lucky enough to be there that night and was very emotional as a luge athlete had died that day. I have seen her many times live and she is absolutely amazing each time and it stays with you. Leonard Cohen asked artists to stop recording this song after kd's rendition which he considered the consumate. Tony Bennett (RIP) said publicly that he considers her the best singer in history. They did many duets together. She has a very powerful voice but her most haunting singing happens when she is simply expressing emotion like the song Barefloot, and Wash me clean. Her most famous song is 'Constant Craving which she won a Grammy for (she has won 4). To hear the real power of her voice live you should watch her first performance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson where she sings In Care of the Bues.. (she was also his favorite female singer) as well Bono, Elton John and many others rate her best
Thank you for your reaction to this performance - I loved your commentary. I'm a K.D. Lang fan, and her performance of the song is the best there has ever been in my opinion. I'm going to watch your reaction to Crying next, but I hope you also listen to Constant Craving, if you haven't already. And, I'm now a new subscriber to your channel.
I wish you’d shown the video as-is. It’s POWERFUL! Her alone on a massive stage in front of an insanely massive audience, dressed in an all white suit. Soooo powerful to the message.
She was part of a Roy Orbison Tribute where she sang Crying, there are a few videos of her do this song, but her live performance on 2/24/90 at Universal Amphitheatre is a virtuoso performance.
I love your reaction to one of my countrywomen's performance at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. I have followed kd Lang since the early 1990s owning 2 of her albums (vinyls), "Ingenue" & "Drag". There is much to love about both albums especially "Constant Craving" (1992). The late great Leonard Cohen made it clear that kd Lang's rendition of Hallelujah was pure perfection. You should also check out her duet & backup singer on Roy Orbison's Black & White LP.
If you love great singers and epic performances... Have you seen Heart honoring Led Zeppelin by performing "Stairway to Heaven" at the Kennedy Center Honors?
