"I have a friend who has been treated as an odd person because of their eye-catching dress code, peculiar taste, variety of talents, a defense mechanism derived from shyness, and personality that has strong opinions on most things. I love my friend even more because of these characteristics, but they said that they had to live through more hatred for the same reasons. I started by writing down the words I wanted to say to my 'odd' friend, but as I wrote, I gradually realized that this was also my story. After completing the lyrics, I thought that it wasn't unnatural at all if I substituted anyone, not just me or my friend, as the main character. Everyone feels alienated at one point because they didn't meet the standards set by others. Including my friend, I want to speak to everyone who was born as strong but unique, that you are not an odd person, but that you are like a star." - IU

The song is a love song to her fans, telling us that we are special in her eyes, and that WE are her celebrity. It asks us to know that we are loved. It’s a request to love ourselves. The MV, however, is the illustration of her journey of how she herself came to love herself. In the beginning she looks uncomfortable in the spotlight and she’s shown to be lonely in a crowd that’s faceless and anonymous. It’s constantly shown how she sees another version of herself, who is a stranger to herself. In the end, she follows this stranger/IU, only to find a mirror. It’s symbolic that this person she has been chasing all along was inside her all along. It’s a journey we’ve had a peek through her songs like 23 and Palette. Once she realized this, she’s able to smile in the spotlight, rather than feeling like she needs to hide from the press she was hiding from earlier. The message is poignant, in the wake of losing so many of her friend. She’s imploring her fans to love and cherish themselves as she’s learned to do herself.
