This commercial was filmed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
After a successful release in Canada during the mid 1960's, the product was introduced to the Australian market and then went worldwide.
The product was re-introduced to the Canadian and USA markets in the early 1990's. Although the packaging was updated, the product itself remained the same.
K-tel still receives requests today from people who are looking to buy the Vegomatic, or to purchase replacement cutting blades for the unit that they have been using for over 40 years!

The only tears you’ll have from cutting that onion, are tears of joy

"unripened tomatoes." Now that was the key. They had to be almost green or you pent the next five minutes cleaning the pins. Learned that the hard way.

Almost every Tomato sold in Grocery Stores is Unripe, it might look look reddish, but a bit of Ethylene Gas, will make the Greenest Tomato 'look' ripe

We had one in the mid-60s when I was a kid. I have 2 if not 3 of the early versions that I still use today.

The original Veg-o-matic commercials, in the '60s, were black & white. They showed a bunch of the same stuff, but with a different, more stiff-sounding announcer on the soundtrack. I notice that here, they specify that you can slice a "whole, firm, unripened tomato". The original commercial did not say that. I'm sure a regular squishy tomato just was reduced to a splatter of mushy pulp in the Veg-o-matic.

It's too bad the dyes in the original 16mm film have faded. Many of these old commercials are now very red or very green.

Funny thing, I was in a Williams Sonoma store and they were selling a fancy schmancy food chopper. I thought it looked like a glorified Veg-O-Matic.

In the 80s my employer's daughter was so excited about getting front row tickets to a Kenny Rogers concert. Guess who opened for Kenny Rogers? Gallagher. I laughed and ask if she knew who Gallagher was and she said no. I asked if she had a raincoat and she wanted to know why I ask. I told her because you're going to need it with your front row seats.

You slice them then turn the top blade 90 degrees and place the potato on again with the slices horizontally. It's a 2 step process.

I know it ain't him, but that voice over sounds like Neil Hamilton, who played Commissioner Gordon on Batman. At the end he says, "great gift idea", so Christmas 1976 I got one of these for my Mom. (only kidding. I couldn't have afforded the $9.85.)

@hebneh Yeah, so it'd work fine as long as the tomato wasn't ripe and ready for eating! I suppose you'd have to slice it first and THEN wait for it to ripen...

j smith Run the potatoes through on thick slice. Reset to dice. Lay the slices in place and run them through. Now, they are diced.

Oddly enough, i found one of the cutting blades from what i think was the "Veg-O-Matic" slicing device left behind when we moved into our new house back in '78. We tossed it out soon after because it looked kind of rusty.

I had the Popeil Pasta Maker. It worked about a 1/2 dozen times, and then the unit just cracked and split into pieces while I was running it. I thought it might explode at one point, but I was just laughing so hard, I didn't care. Never bought another Popeil product after that.

I always wondered how it could dice something without first slicing the onions or carrots horizontally first.. If that's the case, K-Tel lied about a product.. And we know that never happened. .............. it's a mystery.

TheOmega1989 OK so they distributed them. They weren't THEIR products.

MetFan37 I don't see them representing that it was their product, it says right in the commercial its a popeil product. This is a catalogue of their products that they marketed and sold, so I don't know why they wouldn't include it
