I LOVE this. I am Black American and I saw the TikTok dances of so many people from all over the world. This is what the world should be, not full of hate and racism. Thank you for making this and sharing Maori culture. On a side note, the sound reminds me of Kirk Franklin. Something like this should be done for all of the cultures of the world that we know precious little about. Thank you!

I've been amazed at how this song has reached so many people from so many places & cultural backgrounds. It's been truly amazing to see people embrace us and our culture, but I am amazed at how it's also touched something in so many people for their own cultures as well. It truly has become a song of a unity. I absolutely love this song! It brought me to tears the first time seeing it here on YT

I think this can be said for many waiata old and new, it's only very rare a waiata is broadcast outside of Aotearoa. Consider Lorde, whose most popular song calls into standard waiata call and return harmonies that sinks deep into a listeners heart when heard, if only they knew that maori have been applying these to our waiata for decades.

Also, since when did we start passing judgement in the present onto a culture based on a biased eurocentric view of history? Prejudice and discrimination right there 🙄 The OPs statement is correct. Maori have made a habit of producing songs that transcend New Zealand. I was born in 1999 so I'm too young to remember Poi E but do understand it reached an international audience. Maisey Rika and her song Tangaroa whakamautai reached an overseas audience too, clocking up millions of views. Maimoa did the same and now this catchy number has had some good success abroad. While I'm not Maori, i am very much a supporter of their culture here in Aotearoa. From your friendly Viking Kiwi. Edit: i also forgot to mention Stan Walker's Aotearoa song. That got a good amount of reception overseas.

I've always been drawn to your beautiful language and culture. Omg This song is so beautiful and I love that you are so proud of your heritage and language after the colonisers have tried to erase it. I wish I could understand the words of this song but I feel it in my heart. Much love and hugs from an east african somali 🇸🇴

This song is talking about the state highway 35 that runs along the East cape of New zealand - going from my home city of Gisborne (Māori name: Tairāwhiti or Te Tai Rāwhiti) - and the greater Gisborne area, heading up around to the small coastal towns and villages along the way. They mention a Paua pie in the song - Paua is what we Māori call Abalone, so a Abalone pie is what it is if you're wondering - not a fan of Paua myself lol, so cant say if it's any good. As he mentions at the start "First place to see the sun" - Gisborne/Tairāwhiti is the first official city in the world to see the sunrise.

It's a very rich culture too, rich in death, murder and superstition, trapped in brutal tribal warfare all over the country, one couldn't venture far without being set upon and killed by another tribe, then they were eaten by those who killed them, so don't be mistaken, the chill and peaceful culture you see is one nurtured by western civil ideals, cause the culture before the settlers arrived was anything but peaceful and chill, so it's nice to see they're able to develop their culture in a peaceful manner.
@tvxyzn

@@rustyneedles3743 So like all other cultures then? You write like Māori were the only ones who fraught other tribes. We did this for land and resources like any other culture. I love how you forgot the last 2 centuries of racism, colonialism & violence towards Māori from Europeans. My grandmothers generation were whipped for speaking their native tongue by white people. That was 2 generations ago! Peace and love my ass. Stop spreading misinformation

@@tvxyzn @Tee lol, you're adorable ... I am Maori, lol, but good to see you acknowledge we were like most other tribes and people, though you then continue to single out Europeans ! hahaha, typical ... what did Maori do to the folk on the Chatham Islands ? cause I tell you now, it was far, far worse then what the Europeans did to the Maori ! lol, but hey, you're privy to the truth ! so we should listen to you ! you're fucking lucky some like Gengis Khan didn't arrive here in NZ, cause I tell you what, no Maori would be left alive you just couldn't help but single out the ole Europeans huh ? hehe,
