SHIKHA SINHA that's also true , I won't deny that. Once again the problematic themes of this movie is not so harsh that it would collectively invoke this feeling of uneasiness but also disregarding the emotions of certain people whether it be men or women and rather than engaging in conversation about it , I've seen people who simply put of up the box office success as some sort of answer to it which isn't right in my opinion . I can't simply ask a person to not enjoy this film nor should people demean my or other's emotions by simply telling us to enjoy the film and move on and to take me "feminist ass" somewhere else. That's just funny .

@@lollllllllll1000 I agree with you. People started to use feminist word like it's abusive language. I was uncomfortable with the screenplay not story. I know it's raw real. But in our country where sanitary pads and condoms are taboo to buy from medical stores there expecting maturity from crowd to see film as film(which is massy) is not true. We know how sexist misogynistic we are. Men are pressurised to be a sole breadwinner of the family physically strong. Women are supposed to be timid submissive and working(oh we are modern) in major areas. This film terrifies me for sure. When in industry like Bollywood Vikas Behl get not guilty card while so many people accused him and many more examples And Hollywood collectively throws the predators publicly What can we expect people will not be affected this behaviour We don't see film as film

I don't get sucharita's logic. According to her a bad character who resembles real-life people shouldn't be awarded a happy ending!! That is insane. In The usual suspects, the bad guy got away without any punishment. Fight Club, Silence of the lambs, Nightcrawler and a countless number of films rewarded the villain or problematic characters with a happy ending. And in real life, most of the guy in colleges behave like that!! it is necessary to condemn their behaviour rather than criticising a film showcasing something that resembles a real-life character. It is a film and the director expressed his perception which he has the right to do. Saying he should have done in the other way is the complete violation of democratic expression. At the end of the day, it is a story and it is not something will force people to become assholes.

I think the release of a movie like Kabir Singh post the MeToo movement is drawing the kinds of extreme reactions that we are seeing around us. There has been so much conversation about the vagaries of toxic masculinity and the way we as a society treat women, in the last one year, that now a mainstream Indian movie which seemingly endorses the other side of the spectrum has left many (including Sucharita) overwhelmed with shock and disbelief. On the other hand, there is a huge section of the audience who have felt emotionally engaged with the love story at the core of the movie (as Anupama pointed out). This section has taken tremendous offense with people who have criticized the movie on grounds of glorifying a problematic character, and their attitude towards defending the movie can largely be underpinned to 3 arguments: a) there is a precedence of a number of movies made in India as well as in the West where the central or supporting characters have been hugely problematic, but all of them have been "let off the hook" and found redemption by the end of the movie, b) people in the audience have the mental faculty to judge what's problematic and what's not (eg: people don't go around killing others after watching Gangs of Wasseypur), and c) there is no need to look at everything through the lens of urban India's newly found "wokeness" about women's issues, just let a film be a film (this argument, although not explicitly articulated at most places, has implicit indications almost everywhere). My take on this is there is a fundamental difference between the problematic-ness of Kabir Singh and the central characters of other movies which are being cited by people in favour of this movie, films such as Wolf of Wall Street, Don, Taxi Driver, Gangs of Wasseypur etc. : there is no general consensus yet on the ethical and moral aspects of the actions undertaken by Kabir Singh. Bharadwaj Rangan cited Lolita as a book where the central character is a despicable man, but the way the book is written you as a reader never end up not rooting for him. But the question we need to ask ourselves is this: is there a general consensus that raping a minor is wrong? Yes. Same is true for killing people - there is a general consensus that it is wrong, and a majority of the population believe. In fact people who don't believe killing other people is wrong is termed "sick" by the society. But in case of Kabir Singh, is there a general consensus that a man being in command of a relationship to the point where he controls the actions of the other person is wrong? No. The conversation around women's issues and insidious abuse against them is still at such a nascent stage in our society that there is still no hard line that has been drawn to evaluate what's acceptable and what is not. And this is the crux of the problem with Kabir Singh - that it has come out at a time where it can influence our collective consciousness regarding women's issues and build a general consensus around it; not the fact that a problematic character finds redemption and a happy ending without having to answer for his actions. P.S: I think what Rahul meant when he said that other films with a central problematic character are all tragedies is not that they all have sad endings, but that there is a tremendous irony underlying the plot, which recognizes truth as it is but also questions its existence.

Perhaps from a purely academic sense of gauging art on can remain objective and therefore not be affected by social impact that art creates.. However, when a girl from Delhi (for example) watches a film like this, having witnessed the grossest form of mysogyny, male toxicity that spreads far and deep in the life around her spreading across class divides... she can't help but react the way Sucharita did. The perceived validation is real, it's impact is real, the fear is real... Media... particularly popular media has a duty towards society. It is mentioned in Civics. Women in this society are very unsafe... the dangers are deep rooted and internalized... Oppressing women is genuinely considered love. I shudder.
@Djockzone
@Djockzone 5 лет назад
But are you fine with those films inwhich women sleep around like sluts, masturbate, ask bartender's dick size, glorifying porn actress life, etc? The issue is with these so-called Sucharita being egoistic and reacting only to those that have not satisfied her ego. A guy slapping a girl ks wrong but the girl slapped the guy multiple times in the film and people smiled and laughed when during that time. No reaction to that? Where's equality when we need it?

I live in a tier 3 city , and I'm seeing boys and men crowding the theatres to watch this movie. I get the point Mr. Rangan and anupama maam are making . But in a country like ours influence of such a movie is easily seen. I'm a teacher and I see students post the most controversial scenes(I haven't seen the film but the scene is where maybe some girl is smiling post their makeup session, and the background music is one which feels like he's made a conquest).All of those young boys that I taught, and know that don't believe in feminism and equal rights or at least women having a right to live their life on their own,will look at this movie and feel that this behaviour is justified. Bollywood has to stop glorifying these silent mode heroines,that is not how most girls are. My beauty cannot be defined by my innocence.Where are young ambitious smart ,career driven,back answering women. On a very personal level of course women hate a kabir singh because they know and I know that a man like this will hit you,demean you , and treat you like shit,he won't sing bekhayali,he will throw acid on me.

If I’ve only seen dignified, decent men in my life and not come across patriarchy even remotely, it doesn’t mean that my reality is true for the entire country and all the social issues don’t exist, or exist on a small scale. And surely, if you have noticed boys turning into adults with such mindset, then it’s indeed sad. Having said that, it is also true that those kind of people will twist anything to suit their ideologies, no matter If cinemas are made that depict men as the most decent and dignified heroes. In fact, look at all the heroics in Salman Khan’s movies, all the patriotism in Akshay Kumar’s movies, all the social messages in Aamir Khan’s movies.. even if those movies become blockbuster hits, have they stopped misogyny in India? Patriarchy? Have the rapes stopped? Are all the women feeling safe and uplifted?

Filmmaking is an art form and this movie is just another piece of art (plz don't take this piece of art line like I'm saying it is the biggest film ever made). It's just so disturbing to see so much of hate for a movie. So where were people when Salman bhai slapped the actress in Bandhan. I have seen many south indian movies in which the actress is slapped where were all this people then, nobody said anything about them. Though I feel I personally react to a movie taking in my ideology with me, I completely understand Baradwaj Rangan and his example of "Lolita". What you people are talking about is whether to give prevalence the ethical over the stylistic perspective or the other way around. Rangan here seems to be pointing out how sometimes the text (here the film)in spite of its disgusting subject matter, turns out popular or is celebrated just because of its literary power, what the formalists called the "literariness" of a text. In fact sometimes the whole point of creating such narratives is to prove that the aesthetics can make the ugly look cool I guess though in case of Kabir Singh I am not sure that the Director wanted to do that. Anyways, loved the discussion. Good to hear such genuine yet cultured statements.😊😊

What people don't realize is that if Kabir Singh made you feel uncomfortable, it was supposed to. It did exactly what it set out to do. With Arjun Reddy and now Kabir Singh, the director Sandeep Vanga is only exhibiting a different kind of genre by narrating the story from the perspective of a protagonist who's grossly flawed. For once we are shown the film through the prism of grey rather than the extremes of black or white. Because the story unfolds from his perspective, Kabir thinks he's the right kind of man, always in the right, wronged by circumstances and justifies his alcohol and substance abuse on the same basis, which is typical of any addict. It's also why his misogyny and dominance is apparently glorified and lionized, because it's through his perspective that we are shown the movie. Throughout the duration of the movie, he doesn't realize the fact that the fault lies solely with him. That it's his nature that's rotten, not his destiny. Throughout the film, we are shown his downward spiral into insanity, almost feeling a sense of suffocating hopelessness as though we too are infected by his self-inflicted agony. Vijay/Shahid both did a great job in conveying this torment in their respective renditions of the character. This misery continues till the very end, up to the point where we as an audience have given up any kind of hope of redemption for the protagonist, when he does a 360 degree turn by finally acknowledging his problem and sets out to seek salvation. I didn't find anything remotely wrong about this movie. The film doesn't in any way glorify the character. On the contrary it makes you feel disgusted and repulsed by him to the extent that you'd never even think of following his lifestyle. You'd completely abhor it. Personally, speaking from experience, as a person who's never had alcohol or consumed drugs or been a domineering misogynist for that matter, the film rather than giving me a wrong message instead made me all the more determined not to stray on to such a path. You literally end up begging the character to mend his ways. The supporting characters in the movie like Kabir's brother and his friends are all the while trying to draw him out of his ruination but to no avail. This film is in fact a very revolutionary step in Indian cinema, depicting a story about a flawed man, languishing in a greyish-dark space rather than lily-white or pitch-black. Usually our films don't go into that area. The film actually delivers a positive message that you can start redeeming yourself even when you touch the rock bottom of hell as long as you possess the will to do so. When Kabir is at his lowest point after being debarred from his profession and having suffered a personal tragedy, he is at the rock bottom of his pit and he has to make the choice whether he wants to remain confined to the darkness of the pit for eternity in a limbo or start climbing out of it. He does the latter and thus the film after subjecting us to a lot of darkness and discomfiture for most of its runtime leaves us with the teensiest glimmer of hope. Just like life. What's also notable is that in the end he tries to convince Preeti for once to come back to him rather than imposing his will on her. Before she reveals that the child she's carrying is his own, Kabir believes it belongs to her spouse and yet he is ready to accept Preeti with her child and raise it as his own. Now isn't that quite a progressive step that the director took? Kabir is shown to have evolved and matured from someone who would never tolerate any other male near Preeti to someone who wants Preeti back in his life with a child he initially believes to be someone else's. This is a point these critics choose to ignore for the sake of peddling their respective personal agendas. For all those who were unsettled and disturbed by the movie, as I said earlier, it was supposed to make you feel so. The superlative acting and technical expertise made the movie a worthwhile experience. I wish all these ultra-feminists and so-called liberals watch this movie with an open mind and learn to accept a posture distinct from their own. Especially since this breed cries hoarse when accusing the right wing of trying to distort history and current narratives to impose their points of view, when they are themselves intolerant to those of others. To deny that people like Arjun Reddy/Kabir Singh exist, would be denying the harsh reality of society. These are the same people who whoop and clap when Swara Bhaskar masturbates and abuses her husband on screen.

Wow..you hit the nail on its head....wish the nail would hit the critics' heads as well. They are crying hoarse about the first scene where he tries to force a woman at knife point which is really just to show how disgusting he has become , but they are not mentioning anything about the climax where like you said, he is ready to accept her with another man's child and that is indeed so progressive for an Indian male.....I quite liked the movie and the character does have a lot of positives as well.

That's how things work. But making a video..which starts and ends in abuses and slangs for a person..just because your views didn't resonate with hers ..is outright derogatory. You could disagree...but do that with grace. In the name of "roasting"...you were just using an array of abusive words. You want to contradict her..do that with logic and your views about the movie. People who judge a girl's character by her dress or by her friend circle, people who think it is okay to hit their sister or gf or wife because they did not comply with their will. People who think women will be the safest if they confine themselves within the 4 walls will not demarcate between fiction and reality. They will glorify and idealise this character. I understand there are prudent people who can differentiate and understand that movies are movies but the majority of young minds and those who try inculcating every goddamn thing they see on screen are not going to understand that whatever was shown is not right. See the bigger picture. One movie might not affect but many others like these will definitely. The same story is being made in every language now. This is not right. Ayushmann Khuranna, I feel, puts this guy far behind, not only in the sheer quality of his talent, but also in maturity, understanding and sensitivity. Not that every actor is answerable to the roles they portray, but atleast have the guts and the social awareness to acknowledge that the character you portrayed is not exactly someone worth praising. Instead he goes tangent and explains how Kabir Singh is a character pure of heart, and how we all have a little Kabir Singh in us and all. The problem with people watching movie reviews is that they forget that the person reviewing the movie is sharing his/her own subjective analysis of the movie. Unfortunately, people perceive it as an objective fact and they expect a review that's sort of like a scientifically objective theory, which is never the case. Another thing which I noticed is that this expectation is very prevalent for reviewers that are famous. So as long as you are relatively obscure, people do not expect the same sense of objectivity from you, but if you blow up and rake in millions of views, suddenly the expectation changes to that of an objective authority which I find it to be very interesting.

Dearest ((well not so much also)) SUCHARITA TYAGI .... I am a woman ... Like you .... Same MO ... As in same demographic profile ... Metro educated / Delhi University student / have seen & experienced incidents of mild molestation here & there / I appreciate good cinema from all over the world - and sometimes Hindi movies too / I have a young son growing up in today's rather sensitive & outspoken times ... So I am & have to be more responsible in my choices and my reactions because how I feel about issues will reflect in my parenting style too .... And let me tell you .... What I find truly disturbing was your review of this film ... That you find a movie like this deeply problematic .... That people like you loose objectivity while doing your job .... And your job is to see movies and comment on the craft ... People like you have left no space for us to have a conversation on flawed characters .... For these crazy love obsessed people in their 20s to make mistakes and lose sight of life ... There are people we know and these are people who we ourselves have been to some degree .... Or are you saying that reactions to break up have to homogeneous ((ice cream & shit)) and are you saying our gaze to look at cinema has to always be from a moral high ground .... Cinema is amazing because we get to have a virtual experience on screen about our own vulnerabilities -- our own imperfections get played out on screen and we get a vent for our feelings .... That's the beauty about movies like these .... Because they let us explore aspects of our personality ((in a virtual world)) which we cannot live out in the real world and that's an amazing service they do for us .... In a simplistic way ... For the longest time our movie hero's and heroines used to break out into song and dance routine to you express joy and sadness ... Does not mean we did it in real life but that also does not mean that we hated it everytime they did it .... So anyway .... You keep addressing women who hated Kabir Singh and felt uncomfortable ....while conveniently missing out on women like me ((who are like you - urban & educated & independent & exposed to global cinema & good literature)) who love the movie unabashedly and are not afraid to say it ... Sincerely From a fan who you recently lost ....not so much because of Kabir Singh but for what you have been doing for a while now ....trying to find feminist agendas in all your reviews .... Most prominent example being you loving Captain Marvel which aas high on the feminist agenda but was a disservice in story telling - was so tightened on a nuts & bolts front to be reflective of today's times that it actually stopped being true to its own source material .... Where they show her as a one note AMAZING character when her biggest strength is the fact that she was flawed AF ..... A superhero unwilling to accept her powers or to control her sorrows and her tragic life that she was drowning them in the bottle ... These narratives you selectively choose and miss stink of a bias so deep that as a follower of your work one does not know if you are pushing an agenda or just reviewing a movie

My god you have summed everything thats wrong with Sucharita, and i also went back to watch her Captain Marvel review after watching Kabir Singh, as in what were here observations of a movie that was utter feminist crap and guess what she had all praises for a Captain Marvel which is flawed on so many levels. I had never watched any video of Sucharita before anf at first when i saw her Kabir Singh review i became a fan of her and was almost going to share the video with everyone but one friend of mine cautioned me, so i decided to first watch her review of movie that i have also seen, Captain Marvel and it was then i realised what kind of mistake i was going to do, then i watched Kabir Singh even though i didn't want to because of her video but i did and damn she has over exaggerated so much stuff, she is extremely toxic feminist.

((I love both the movies for my own reasons)) In both the movie reviews ... See how her eyes and tone lights up when she talks about the role of Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman in AQUAMAN and Bo in Toy Story 4 .... Statements like .... "The women exist not just for filling character plot in the story .... they KICK BUTT" ..... It's like in all her work .... Women have to be strong and actually DO something to justify their beauty / their presence .... Like Safeena in Gully Boy can be aggressive and crazy and warrant a movie just about her .... As long as she is a DOCTOR / SURGEON - whatever ..... Why? Safeena's anger and her hurt as a result of her not being able to live a normal life like her friends is justified ..... But Kabir's hurt on ruining his life because he overdosed and could not meet Preeti when she came to his house .... And the promiscuity and crazy that follows is NOT justified -- even though he himself is trying to fill a BIG VOID in his life ... And nothing else .... So if a lady is promiscuous or amoral ---- that's sexual liberation .... But if a man does it - it's "DEEPLY DEEPLY DISTURBING" ..... Makes me want to question as to what do the educated woman of today want from a man - because my son is growing up in this world I think for SUCHARITA .... A woman has to be a dominating person in the relationship .... A vocal, outspoken, career focused woman is the only modern woman who can exist .... In her universe there seems to be no space or recognition for a girl ... Who is may be more introvert, less outspoken, a bit more traditional yet has deep sexual desires, feels the need to stick to a man at all costs ..... likes it if he takes care of her and sees love in his protective and possessiveness ..... Because she was always willing .... All through their relationship - and through the long distance that follows A SUCHARITA TYAGI .... does not see the progressiveness of this girl despite her lack of words ... In the very resolute stance she takes to have the baby ..... Even though she loses her new marriage and parents in the process --- to be a single, unmarried mother in today's judgemental times .... That's not a modern woman for SUCHARITA ..... Only a girl wearing modern clothes, owning her sexuality and living in the universe of a show like "4 More Shots Please" has the right to exist or dictate how every other woman can / should / must live

@@pragyabhardwaj5963 I gotta give it to you, as you've hit the "bulls eye", again. I mean, who doesn't wanna believe in a strong feminist idea? Most of the cultured people would strongly agree. Also, the point you've made about NETFLIX, is an eye-opener. These are the same folks, who'd never want the streaming sites to be regulated, yet, they tend to show blind hatred towards a movie and that's just because a group of people enjoyed(Unfortunately, people like Sucharita doesn't wanna be associated with that part of the crowd). It's ok to view a film with a moral perspective. It's not wrong. However, how naive is it when you apply this for one individual film? When adultery was still a crime a year ago, and there were movies which actually showed these things as normal. Why didn't these feminists spring into action? Weren't there movies that showed women smoking weed? It isn't cool either. These things were/are against the laws of our land. Yet, Sucharita didn't revolt against these things. I understand that these are mean arguments but this is how you can counter argue people with fake feminazi ideas. Having said that, if someone has personally experienced such things, then it's pretty much understandable. The trauma would still be there and they can never enjoy a film.

Dear Anupama, I don't know who owns the Film Companion channel but when it started it was a channel which showed unbiased authentic views about films. It celebrated good cinema. But after sitting through this hour long discussion I realized that you are sitting with a woman by the name Sucharita whom I really admired in the past. But here she was almost blatantly trying to impose her opinion on others. It's okay that she didn't like the film. But she can't force her opinion on others. I saw a recent talkshow of hers on NDTV where she kept smirking at Shekhar Suman just because he had a different opinion than hers. And throughout this entire interview there was not one mention about the performance of the protagonist of the film. This blatantly shocked me. And on the other side there's Rahul. Who just kept on going about how Ranbir Kapoor plays toxic masculinity better than anyone. Don't get me wrong. Ranbir is great. But you don't even mention Shahid's name or his performance in an interview which is about his film and yet you keep on blabbering about Ranbir's other movies. It was just downright spiteful. I really thank you Anupama for clearly stating that you connected with the film otherwise Sucharita would've kept on blabbering lies about how millions of girls texted her about not feeling safe while/after watching the movie. So much spite. I know that these two are no one and their opinions have zilch importance. The Indian audience have had their say and it is showing how much love they have showered over the film and Shahid's performance. I'm just saying this because I've been watching your channel since it's inception and have been a fan since. But that spark of unbiased unadulterated opinions is fading away from the channel. So while you keep pointing fingers at toxic masculinity also address the toxicity that your critics are inhibiting.

People who did not even speak about Sanju are talking ill about Kabir Singh . Celebrating a real life drug addict is the worst thing to do. That was also very uncomfortable to watch . I would have loved if they would have discussed so much about Sanju .

The simple reason for the strong reactions is - 20 years back when we had Darr, Anjaam and countless other films with the guy stalking the girl and obsessing over her, the audience was not as educated on topics like women's consent and sexual harassment etc. Today, in the age of MeToo, many amongst the educated understand that the movies of 80's and 90's glorifying eve teasing, stalking was trash. And the last time the lead character did that in a movie, he was either the villain or the anti-hero who loses in the end (like Darr). Hence Kabir Singh that shows the so called 'hero' engaging in such behavior (and emerging a winner! in the end) is unexpected in the age of Pink and MeToo and a step backward for Bollywood. Call it #AntiPink. Wonder what Shoojit Sircar has to say on this movie.

@@devdeepmukherji6669 As I said, the 'educated' understand the importance of consent today and are unhappy with certain aspects of the movie. I don't mean college/university education but the ones who educate themselves on social issues. But in a patriarchal and mostly non-educated society I am not surprised that Kabir Singh (with a charismatic hunk like Shahid Kapoor) is a hit. The same applies to Preeti's character. She's a product of the patriarchal society where women don't have a say and fall for the one who showers attention regardless of good or bad kind.
@neo-noiranathubronthan6045
@neo-noiranathubronthan6045 5 лет назад
@@devdeepmukherji6669 It was not Preeti who fell in love with Kabir, it was the writers imagination of Preeti that fell in love with Kabir. A male writer, mind you. He has all the creative freedom to write down the character of his fanatsy. But seeing how he trivializes the women characters and their portrayal in the movie by using them for thrills, claps, and cheers for the mainstream audience,(just like how women are used in item songs), I dont think you should come to a conclusion that Preeti as a character is an indicator of how women would behave in real life or Kabir is an indicator of what women find attractive in men. The women who watch the movie might only be liking it because they like to watch their heartthrob Shahid Kapoor being possessive with his girl, and they all know that Shahid Kapoor as a person in real life, atleast in the way he presents himself, is not a real asshole. It could be that they are privileged and socially unaware as well. Women have watched Fifty Shades of Grey in hoardes too, but if a guy ever behaves with them like a Christian Grey or Kabir Singh, I would hazard a guess, that they would remove their chappals and thrash him. Say tomorrow if there is a movie that is ethically ambiguous with its presentation of casteism, humorizing the abuse, where the abuser gets a heroic background score, and the abused, unaware of his rights, tolerates his abuse, would you still dismiss the concerns of the people by labeling it under "Activism"? I mean not all of us are casteists. I am sure such a movie would find supporters too, considering how regressive the mindset of our country is, despite it being democratic in the books. The movie has been released for mass consumption. It has a wide reach. It has the capacity to influence minds. It already is a product of a centuries old mindset.The world has moved on, but for most Indian men, women are these shy submissive robotic creatures that exist to fulfill their unrealistic and childish romantic fantasies. It has to be criticized if it is insensitively portrays the violation of the agency and dignity of a particular class of a society. Because the idea, the movie, is put out into the society, not the directors house or bedroom.

Privilege is a funny thing. It makes you unaware of the country, unaware of the problems and unaware of the effects of cinema on the common person. I understand Baddies point about wanting to see exquisite work regardless of the atrocities of the content, but honestly, if you truly look at our country and interact with the people that such content has an effect on you will realize that is a selfish desire. We are currently a country of devotees. Devoted to a god, a star, a person, an idea. This is a reflection of or culture, in tandem with the fact that we are a developing country and still have poor education for most. This means a large portion of our society is impressionable. As reviewers you always talk about seeing things in context. It's funny how you conveniently forget that there is the social context of the society that watches these movies. I'm not saying you need to be a beacon of righteousness, heck you can say you loved the film... but how can you not acknowledge that such a film DOES have an impact on our fragile, developing society and this is NOT the right time to be making such films... do you not have any sense of responsibility or are you just too blind to see the world around you?
