But, I see movies as an artform and I don't think this movie was trying to promote misogyny or abusive behaviour. Yes, people here do idolize movie characters without completely understanding their "flaws", but labelling the MOVIE as 'misogynistic' is not gonna change anything.. Its not about Shahid Kapoor being Hindi Cinema's lovable, romantic guy that made people think of the glorifying factor. The film is portrayed as a romance film. But we have not had many "romantic characters" hitting their women. They would kill others or die for them but never raise a hand on their love interest. Nawaz's story in Sacred Games was not of his romance but of his rise as a mafia. And we could understand why someone like him was so violent and misogynitic. He was not supposed to be good. I don't think the film glorifyed the character but I can understand why people thought so.

Just to clarify, this movie has set off some real triggers for Indian women because there is a long tradition of misogynistic and abusive men being portrayed as the tragic heroes, perpetuating a culture of abuse and stalking sold as romance. I don't know a single Indian woman who didn't cringe and feel threatened by the movie-going men in India who literally have been cheering the moment he hits her. So it isn't a matter of not using our poor little female brains, it's a matter of cultural context where this movie is being lauded, in a culture where movie heroes and their behavior become templates for men's behavior for decades. I love you guys, but just saying why this has triggered Indian women, especially in the current political climate, where they already don't feel safe. Films don't exist in a vacuum, especially in India. They have very real and direct consequences, especially when the "flawed" characters are the titular protagonist.

You suggest that the audience should view such portrayals 'intelligently' and not see them as glorification of an anti-hero. But there are many men who indulge in such behaviour and even believe that women like it. That is why you will find spectators of this film cheering and rooting for the 'deeply flawed' actions of the main character. They will only see it as an affirmation of their own behaviour while ignoring the turnaround at the end. What do you have to say about that reaction? For your information, this type of misogynist behaviour is regularly shown in Tamil and Telugu films by the main protagonists, and they are by no means considered to be anti-heroes by a considerable section of the audience.

Usually I love happy endings, things tied up neatly by the end, everyone coming around, that sort of thing. I usually agree with Rick. But for this specific movie, the ending was very different from the rest of the film. Everything in the movie was portrayed realistically, there was no sudden change in Kabir's character, even though it felt like there should've been on multiple occasions. The director didn't just give the audience what they wanted at all. But in the end, things just wrapped up perfectly, too perfectly. I agree that not all relationships are perfect, and the movie made a point about that. It was a flawed relationship with flawed characters, but the end was too perfect, too happy.

The major concern for the internet activists (which I am a part of) was actually the reception of Arjun Reddy... apparently people actually wanted a boyfriend like the lead character after watching the movie... and shahid is a beautiful and popular man, so yeah 🤷‍♀️ you're right Korbin, no movie would be problematic if people just used their minds, but they apparently don't and that's why that's a problem.

Director of Kabir Singh (Arjun Reddy) Sandeep Reddy Vanga made a comment, “When you are deeply in love and deeply connected with a woman, and vice versa, there’s a lot of honesty in it. If you don’t have that physical demonstration… you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there.” This was the major reason for people protesting against this film. Literally it was Stockholm syndrome for the woman and you will understand why if you see a lot of mass hero movies in Indian movies.. Stalking is glorified, possessing women like an object is glorified, to a certain extent when a woman when shown as arrogant and gets slapped by the male protagonist is glorified.. I think if you understand the climax you will see the director's point of view which is very much in support of violence between genders .. a slap be it between anyone is just a means of saying I have more control and ego over you.. That is why the movie Thappad is the perfect answer to this movie!!!

A little perspective. This character was literally the hero in the 90% of Indian films for the longest time. People associate this character with what an idea Indian man is supposed to be. This character is celebrated by young men. That is the problem. Korbin said multiple times “If you use your brain” That happens when you live in a society that does not moralize and celebrate misogyny. India is literally one of the worst countries in the world for women. This is a crisis in India. This character will not be looked at like other bad characters are looked at.
@CPLTarun
@CPLTarun 5 лет назад
Yep. Making a bad character the focus of a movie is not the problem. It’s the “glorifying” of his character and behavior using music to generate excitement or hype for violence instead of music that tries to show the audience the real fear and negatives of violence, etc.

Bollywood and other regional indian cinema has a history of showing stalking, harrasing, molesting, violence etc as signs of true love and the female lead eventually realizing that the male lead does all that because he truly loves her and falls for him. This representation over decades has helped in raising a generation of quintessential bad boys who think the only way to win a girl's heart is by being intrusive, rude and even violent to them. From that particular point of view, another anti hero getting his girl in spite of being abusive (no matter how much and for how long) is bound to make those people unhappy who have been clamoring for a change for long. Yeah people should apply their own minds but a lot people watching movies are too young and impressionable to filter out the bad from the good.

People are bothered because this is a 'commercial' movie which reaches more people as compared to a Gangs which is more of a 'parallel' one. You know, those are still pretty distinct in India however much we deny. So people are concerned that this can affect the already misogynistic society of India more since movies and movie characters are hugely followed here.

After watching this review, I am more than proud of you guys and the fact that I am a subscriber of this channel. I 100% agree with you both. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows and its the same thing with people as well. When biopics are made, it includes both the good and bad phases of a person because that's how life is. It in no way means that the bad is being promoted. When SANJU released, nobody said a word about it, because it was a biopic. Nobody saw it as promoting the usage of drugs. It's a similar situation with Kabir singh just the issues are different. The story clearly talks about him being a misogynist, womanizer. It won't be talked about in the first place if it's being promoted.

The original Arjun Reddy was better ..May be cause I already watched it first. But then I loved Kabir singh too. Without bias the heroine made the difference. The heroine in Arjun Reddy had an edge, she was stage artist (google if you dont know what that is)....Arjun reddy was emotionally level up than Kabir singh. May be Kabir singh was made milder in emotion for Hindi audience

Kabir singh was complex and raw. At times it was really vulnerable with you to the point that you hated resonating with it. It's emotionality it's passion is what draws me most towards it B U T there are pros and cons to every movie and the biggest con to me was the ending. Had he moved on and grown in the past 9 months i would've loved the ending but he went back to the thing that broke him and that's what i hated i could be biased because i like omnious endings but personally , if you've gone back to the person who hurt you you've lost all self respect and that doesn't give a very good message. Kabir felt everything so intensely he must've been struggling with some mental problems and that aspect was never touched on. I would've loved to see some growth and character development from the movie. note : i haven't watched arjun reddy . I didn't know what to expect and had high expectations from kabir singh. To me the movie was below average at best. A 2/5.

Hey so most audiences in India aren't aware enough to distance themselves from the misogyny. I saw the same thing happen with the original Telugu version and now this, where what the hero does is glorified. We aren't aware enough to distance ourselves from the problematic parts, it's all very romantic, unfortunately.

You guys are totally unaware of how people react after watching a character like this in India. They genuinely believe this behaviour is heroic & they ape it. They treat women like shit coz they think that's how they'll get them. THAT'S THE PROBLEM. You saw it as all bad because you have seen enough of the world to know that. Character actors like Manoj Bajpayee don't influence people but stars like Shahid Kapoor do. I don't like dividing actors in this manner but that's the only way I can make my point here. Also, it matters how you portray your female characters. In Gangs, Richa does not shut up. She gives it back to him for cheating on her & for being a womaniser. You guys have not seen all our films so you won't understand why some of us have a problem with this. It took us decades to get out of this kind of portrayal of heroes. The problem is not with telling stories of flawed characters. We've been doing that since the 40's. Hope you understand this. Dev D was a good portrayal of a flawed character who realises that he's flawed unlike Kabir Singh who is sulking, hitting people & treating them like shit & never acknowledges the fact that he fucked up. To each his own I guess. I have nothing against your review. You shared your opinion which is cool. I just wanted to make you understand why some people have a problem with it. Peace.

It's not him but if other movies are doing it doesn't make it right for this movie to glorify....There's lot of misogyny in the movie which I think should not be ignored....When they show that in gullyboy that father hit the mother ...It's explicit to us that it's wrong and the son was against it....But in this movie they got together and the slap was easily forgiven

Kritika Dewan It’s a character arc he goes from angry at some people ,bossy,unampethatic to drug addict,angry at everyone,empathetic then from this he changes his life in the end.Thats the whole point it’s to see what will happen if you keep doing this behaviour and how it’s only ruining you.There might be kids who are angry and smoking and they see the movie at first they’ll enjoy but it will hit them when he gets ill and how they might be on the same trajectory.You are saying kids will only pick up misogyny from this ,then I don’t agree with you I think they will see the overall trajectory and obviously there’s always gonna be 5-10% of those idiots who are gonna pick the wrong parts.

@@anu12121212 of course not. Movies with weird and eccentric characters must be made. Atleast 'the gullible and impressionable' youth of India won't be misguided. Also, if movies are able to shape the thinking of teens and the 'new' adults...it isn't the filmmaker that is at fault... It's probably the parents and the family that brought up the youth and failed to give them enough sense to differentiate between right and wrong....and on a much smaller note... From my personal experience, which isn't very plentiful, the concept of love amongst Indians can be a bit intense. I tend to have little sympathy for people and characters who hang on to lost love, and maybe it's because I just haven't experienced it, but at some point a healthy person moves on and meets new people. I never felt bad for him, and I felt the guy that Kabir was in the beginning of the film was very unlikeable, and yet people seemed to fawn over him in the film, despite the obvious disarray in his lifestyle. When he ended up getting the girl after being a shithead the whole movie, that just cemented it for me that I really disliked the story, I just never felt the guy was redeemable. Maybe on a second watch I can be more forgiving, I don't even remember the romance so.... yeah there are people in India that are so over the top about one person they probably didn't even love, and were just infatuated with, and they refuse to live without that person until they get what they want and think they deserve. So many people just like Kabir, that it didn't feel to me like the movie was going to have the intended effect. It felt to me like people who were like Kabir could excuse their horrible nature because the guy got the girl, and everything he believed got proven right.
