I know ARR is known for many other better works. But this composition is so close to my heart. Infact the whole Kadal album is just pure magic. And I feel it's not talked about much. This literally made my day.

This song was highly negatively criticised for its choreography back when it was released. It was way ahead of the style trends then, people couldn't understand and appreciate it. What a shame.

This song actually got me into South Indian music I am not a South Indian but all day I listen to Sid Sriram, kinda my study music plus the ignorance of the language makes me just enjoy the music without any thoughts about other things in lyrics.

This song is coreographed in a way that it starts with the sun from east and ends with sunset to the west..you can notice the shadow moving from one side to the other.

There's no one like Mani Ratnam who can provide justice to AR Rahman's songs or even elevate it a bit with the amazing visuals.

I went to watch this movie in a single screen theatre..and people were laughing at this song..because..mass audience couldn't get it..to be frank we were not ready for this kind of music n choreography back in 2013..got goosebumps watching this song now..

Enjoyed this! You are still discovering new Ar Rahman stuff. Arr had lot more western music in his composition early in his career but made it more subtle as his career progressed. One of his most iconic albums is thiruda thiruda( referred to by Amit trivedi in his interview as his earliest inspiration). Tou will see the Indian and epic western classical blended seamlessly in “veerapandi kottayile” song in this mani ratnam film. Mani later said the movie failed because the music was too big and created a huge expectation. The song is still one of ARRs epic composition. Another fun fact - sid sriram is an American by birth. Grew up in california in a Tamil home around Indian classical music. He is primarily a hip hop/R&b artist until he became full time Tamil playback singer. I know you did not speak much of the lyrics. The lyrics has romance and deep biblical references weaved which did not translate well in your video. Heaven, lamb, “painting me white”, elevating while in love (of god / partner), “tugging on your heartstrings”, “mirror - transformed to same image”, wings, “painting a fish”, etc. etc. hence the choice of gospel based blues/jazz which has evangelistic tinge. At the end of day it is just brilliant music. (I can write a chapter on this song. But will save it).

When two greats(ARR & Mani Ratnam) join the hands along with Sid's Soulfull voice what else can we expect rather than a masterpiece like this!!!!🤟🔥...Kudos to the whole crew....

Sid Sriram is a Californian dude! From SFC, Trained in Indian classical as well as Jazz and Blues. 😀 He composes too . Sings prity much in any Indian language. So far he sang in all South languages including Marathi. Exceptional talent indeed. His mom is a Indian Classical singer , teacher in the US.

Directors have commented that they gotta listen to ARR a 100 times before choreographing his songs. Because they reveal themselves to be something else after multiple listening. There is no one else other than ARR who can compose in these lines which is why directors come to him to give them something that even blows their mind and takes their thinking in direction they haven’t anticipated themselves.

I'm extremely happy the way u guys are awestruck enjoying AR'S master piece works.... In my childhood, as a child I grew up watching AR music .... and I used to think.... OMG.... AR's masterpiece works like all Roja movie songs, AR's works with Prabhu Deva, are limited only in India.... I really wished that these best works of AR should be listened n enjoyed by the whole world too.... ( bcoz his works are that divine )n this happened after 20 years....
