I pretty much never put up videos of my kendo practice, but this morning while working on a kaeshi do waza (a counter attack to the body technique) I brought out the ol' ipad and started recording with the thought of checking out what I was trying to work on and whether it jived with what i reckoned in my mind. Then i thought I'd just trying tossing it up here for the fun of it.
I've been working with the adults and more experienced kids at Lanna Kendo on some of the waza and basics from an amazing seminar that i went to a little while ago in Bangkok with Nabeyama sensei. Over the last couple of weeks we've been trying to nail down this kaeshi do.
I have a Sunday morning practice at Tharnthong lodge just down the mountain from me in Mae Kampong. Mostly it ends up being a solo practice and it gives me a chance to work through ideas for the coming week at Lanna down in Chiang Mai in a nice peaceful setting. Doing this practice on my own i find helps later on when attempting to pass thing on with others.
Today I was focusing on the use of the left hip to initiate the Do (body) strike. I find that with that hip well engaged the strike can become very powerful and at the same time fluid and released. Super fun!
