1987 they were lucky.. easy group , did not play windies and pak and made to semis...in 2019 , they were the best team , only lost becoz of their defensive bowling and big game pressure letting down their batting..

Australia just like India in 1983 went into the tournament as pre-tournament outsiders and were termed as club side by legendary Pakistani cricketer Asif Iqbal. Their endeavours to rebuild an Australian side beyond the era of Chapell brothers, Marsh and Lillee sustained a severe setback by the defection of some of their regular players to the rebel tour of South Africa during its apartheid era.

The batsmen had mastered slogging in the final overs and running between the wickets. The bowlers focussed on economy. Most importantly, their captain Allan Border, despite being the best batsman in the world(in tests), had become so frustrated with the results that he had threatened to resign if the team didn't perform upto his standards. Infact, post this WC, Australia started to ascend to the title of the world's best team winning 26 of its 56 tests under Border.

He wasn't dropped for playing the rash shot in the SF. He was removed from the captaincy once and for all and in the next 6 years till his retirement, he played under 3 different captains. The only time he was dropped was when he played a rash shot against England in the test at Delhi during the 1984 home series despite Gavaskar as captain had instructed him to block.

He was the only bowler who was able to contain Graham Gooch's otherwise ruthless assault on the Indian attack taking 2 wickets at an economy of barely 4 per over despite the pitch favouring spinners and was pissed off when Gooch hit Shastri and Maninder to all corners of Wankhede. Coming in to bat, wickets were tumbling one after the other and he thought enough is enough and started hitting every delivery off the ground. He scored 30 in just 22 deliveries to set an example for the rest of the tail that they too needed to attack the English bowling as he had bought the required run rate down to within 5 an over, something the likes of the tailenders from Australia would've pulled off easily. But sadly, we're Indians, we just don't follow what a tough captain says(other than Ganguly of course). Contrast this to the other SF between pak and Australia, Kapil's opposite number imran khan scored 58 at a pathetic strike rate of less than 70 chasing 265 and when he was dismissed, the asking rate had climbed to 8 per over though pak's tailenders like abdul qadir and iqbal qasim were occasionally good at slogging and took the final total to within 19 runs of the target before pak was all-out. But khan didn't receive a single word of criticism from either the press or the PCB for his slow batting. I personally don't think Kapil should've been penalized in this manner.

@@AnkitSingh-xl6pt Gooch had practiced the sweep shot most of the day before along with left arm spinner W Raman at the nets to counter Maninder and Shastri. Coming to Kapil, he was well within his rights to play that shot and he is an aggressive batsman and that was how he used to bat always whether scoring 175 against Zimbabwe or 30 against England, yes India were well on course that time but would have been 6 runs lesser to the target had it come off. But we are an emotional country and defeat in the WC means the end of the world for us. We public tend to talk more and rue about the missed chances in cricket than the plight of women in our country. Secondly Imran’s case is different, in Pak he is treated as a Demi god especially after his victories in India and England just before the World Cup in 87. He had taken 3 crucial wickets earlier in the day ( semis ) ie,( Valletta, Dyer and McDermott) and remember Pak were 3 down for not many in the chase when he and Miandad began the repair work and Pak couldn’t have afforded to lose another wicket at that time so the slow process of rebuilding the innings was well within the justification and mind you he was adjudged caught behind allegedly wrongly so Imran would always dispute that in his favour. He is a grinder of a batsman accelerating only in the end once he gets his eye in ( his 70 against Eng 1992 final can serve as an example) Kapil on the other hand is a dasher of a batsman India were cruising along and had he restrained himself a bit .. who knows but then if only wishes were horses.

@@fayazkhan1729 true Kapil should've restrained himself. But what about India's much celebrated top order from the tournament which was prolific throughout the tournament ? Sidhu, Shastri , Gavaskar(in his final international outing). They fell for low scores. Vengsarkar was unfortunately unwell and didn't play. The only ones left to salvage something were Kapil and azhar. But to blame the defeat entirely on the team's most valued player is something unwarranted. In regards to imran, since the match was held in Lahore(if I recall correctly), the local umpire wouldn't want a death warrant upon him by giving the benefit of the doubt to the Australian bowler, particularly when the batsman in question was the home team's autocratic dictator, so khan should've accepted the decision quietly without protest. Besides, the guy's been a crybaby all his life. I remember him once commenting on a pak umpire's dubious lbw to a visiting batsman that "in the gentlemen's game, you can't question the authority" but when he himself got out with a nick to the keeper while touring, he went to question it's authenticity in front of the media. Infact, going by simple rules, all-rounders are meant to speed up the scoring rate. When miandad was at the crease and holding fort at the other end, imran should've strictly rotated the strike. Even if he did possess that stroke-making ability, he wasn't a Michael Bevan like finisher. In regards to being a demigod, devine figures like Sachin and Sir Viv Richards used to be castigated for days despite performing at their peaks in case the team lost. But the pak media is just.....well let it be.
