Discover the remarkable story of The Kahkwa Club, a prestigious social organization in Erie, founded back in 1893 with a focus on water sports. As time passed, the club faced its fair share of challenges, including land constraints and competition from other resorts. But that didn't stop them from making their mark.
In 1903, a groundbreaking collaboration with the Erie Golf Association transformed the club's destiny. A brand-new clubhouse was established on a picturesque bluff, offering breathtaking views of the magnificent Lake Erie. This development gave birth to the Ferncliff subdivision, where home lots were thoughtfully marketed, allowing residents to relish the club's splendor from their very own dwellings.
The Kahkwa Club's growth has been nothing short of impressive. From a humble beginning of 105 members in its inaugural year, the club continued to flourish, captivating the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Even a fiery incident in 1899, when a boiler erupted in the clubhouse basement, couldn't dampen the spirits of two courageous stewards who promptly extinguished the flames, preventing further damage.
Accessing the new Kahkwa Club became an adventure in itself. Enthusiasts could reach the club's oasis via trolley service, horse-drawn carriage, or even enjoy a scenic steamship ride from the foot of State Street. This accessibility added to the allure and exclusivity of the club, attracting a diverse crowd of individuals eager to experience its charm firsthand.
Today, we invite you to immerse yourself in this captivating tale of history and prestige. Join us as we unravel the legacy of The Kahkwa Club, an iconic institution that has stood the test of time. My grandparents home wasn’t far from the orphanage. My Great Uncle Chris Chiappazzi was born with autism and he lived at the orphanage for while until my Grandfather Joe Chiappazzi got him out to live with him and his family. Uncle Chris later got a job at Marx toys and had a good life.

Thank you for another great Erie history video. One fact about the St Joseph Orphanage building that is rarely mentioned is the use of the building in the early 70s by the Erie School District. This became what was called Model Middle School or Project Individual. This existed for less than 5 years in the mostly Un-renovated building before becoming a senior living home. The building was extensively improved and added on to by the new operators (HANDS?) I attended this school. I’d love to see a deeper history of the Erie Schools including this short lived one.

I am blown away! I have driven down West 8th Street, noticed Kahkwa Blvd and had no idea that the club was once there. I have learned a ton from your video. Please keep them coming. Fantastic job!
