@@LETSTALKENTERTAINMENT I like all styles of metal. Grew up in the 80s listening to Maiden and Thrash. Now it's pretty much everything. Anthrax have been my favourite band for a long time probably about 1988. Charlie was one of the founders of the blast beat on the SOD track Milk and has always been well known for his very fast and diverse playing and double kicks. He is better than Lombardo and Portnoy who he has regular live drum battles with. He has everything and such a groove when he plays. I also like Hogan,Kollias, Lombardo,Portnoy and of course Kai Haito. Remember there are plenty of extremely fast players out there these days but none of them have the versitiliy of Charlie.
Hahto's best and most demanding work can be found on Enochian Crescent demo from 1996. I believe I have it uploaded on my channel. Do a search and you should find it. Not many know about this, and it's a shame. It really is the most mind-blowing stuff from Hahto ever.
Kai, there is no "drummers" like you in metal music. With your instrument, you have made metal, as a genre, better. Working with creative masterminds like Jari, Juha, and Tuomas gives your talents the forum they need to be fully utilized, because, like it or not, you are an artist enhancing their visions with your own and turning them into reality like no other. (I have no doubt what so ever that the aforementioned trio agrees.) I wait for the day when Tuomas lets you loose and says "Kai, here are some songs, do your thing". As a send-off, there is a Dutch saying that I really like, and as a Finn, it seems to make a lot of sense as well. "Doe maar Normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg" - Just act normally, that's already crazy enough - which, if I have understood the cultural meaning correctly, is that normalcy has a value and too much of anything is just crazy. For me personally, that says, "Be yourself, and don't do anything stupid". drumtalk and Kai Hahto, thank you for this interview.
31:48 Kai: "Go to the gigs and support the music" Yes sir, just bought a ticket to next summer Kuopio Rock featuring Nightwish. Looking forward to see you there great drummer.
My first experience of seeing Kai play live... it was 2003, a Rotten Sound (grindcore) show in my hometown. Holy shit, this man was... and still is a machine.
A wedding drummer!!! NOW I understand! He does everything he can to NOT draw the eye, to channel everything through his sound. Jukka was / is a showman, as well as being a BEAST. Jukka wants to draw the eye. Which is his style . Kai is both the storm, AND the calm at the center.
@@Grizzlox The Wembley recordings are complete crap quality wise. Also it does not really showcase his skills. The Drumcams from the Wintersun tours are the shit :).
For those that knew him from Nightwish take a look at Wintersun's ''Beyond the dark Sun'' as an exemple.. He was one of the pioneers of bombastic drumming with blasts over melodic parts in the beggining of 2000. Sometimes I wonder if they keep him chained to do a Nightwish show without blasting and fast doublebassing everything!!!
It's great to hear that on all levels of music, the feeling and problems are the same. Love that he mentioned the Jazz approach, leaving empty space to improvise night to night. Makes me appreciate him even more. Kai is amazing, Nightwish is beautiful.
He is without a doubt one of the best drummer in the metal scene, easily one of my top favourites but unfortunately still very underrated. Humble, creative, fast, genuine, heartfelt, technical and precise. When I saw the preview I was pissing my pants in excitement and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time and resources into making this, but why of all songs did you choose "Loneliness" as a backtrack where he didn't play a note, as in the entire Wintersun last album? Ahahah, anyway great job, great questions, much love :)
glad that you like it! I love Kai! but look -- I wanted to get live footage. wasn't possible. I asked Kai for footage. but he didn't feel he had the right material. so whatchagonnado? I came up with the idea of creating drone footage in a forest nearby to get 13 little segments using some mellow sounds by Nightwish. RU-vid algorithms detected everything I tried, even 5 seconds of the outro (!!!) of "The Greatest Show on Earth". So I picked Wintersun intros and other mellow parts from songs Kai suggested. By this point I had uploaded 18 different test versions until finally the algorithms were ok. Then I asked Nucear Blast and the bands for permission. In the end getting the inteludes right took me about a month or more. so to be honest -- I don't care if there's Kai drumming or not or if it's from an album he didn't play on as long as the video works for me.
@@drumtalkofficial That wasn't really meant ti be a rude critique, just ti pinpoint a funny fact :) Didn't know those facts, kudos to you, for the even greater job!
nah, I didn't take it as rude critique at all :-) but this was such a traumatizing experience that I took this opportunity to tell the story. this season was such a big effort but of course no one can tell...
@@jamiewalton666 Charlie is definitely one of my influencers! But my top 5 is: 1) George Kollias 2) Gavin Harrison 3) Martin Lopez 4) Kai Hahto 5) Gene Hoglan
Sad to admit this is the first time I've heard of Kai. I've never had much interest in any of that Finnish/Euro Symphonic/Folk/Gothic Metal, but Rotten Sound might just be right up my alley. Going to look into his other bands now. He seems like a genuinely nice, humble & down-to-earth guy. He'd be the the ideal drummer to take lessons from. Another great video! Best drum channel on RU-vid. 🤘
Check out Murderworks. It's the best Rotten Sound album and Kai's highest point in his career in terms of technique, skill and ideas. It's rare to have an album where the drums are the main/lead instrument. And even more rare to not be bothered by the fact! It's a total blast (heh heh).
A well-designed questionnaire A polite, humble and excellent drummer A cinematic look Wow! This interview will be one of the most memorable of my life. ♥️🤘🏽
Great video! Kai is my favourite drummer and is so nice. I've been lucky enough to meet him a couple times and he was really cool. Swallow the Sun is my favourite band so thank you for bringing them up in the interview :)
Kai Hahto and Gavin Harrison ... the BE(A)ST drummers of our days. Living Legends. period. AWESOME interview, Thanks Drumtalk!!! ... PS: the music of Witersun in the middle section of video is an icing on the cake. Brilliant!
Yo Dario, you're very welcome! Absolutely enjoyed the time I could spend with him. Unfortunately there was no way to get some live footage of him but I'm happy that those little segments in between do the trick
@@galadballcrusher8182 Yeah! Fucking great! In my thought I was giving more importance to the incredibile versatility of Harrison and Hahto... but I mean, there are a lot of really great drummer. In my mind I see Harrison and Hahto more like Musicians than just drummers. This is the only reason I said they are for me nowadays the Be(a)st drummers, because of this reason, they are Musician that explore a lot of different kind of music and genres.
Yes great drummer he replaced nightwish original drummer who quit band bout 5 or so years ago due to having insomnia .hes fantastic drummer and comes across nice guy to .im huge nightwish fan so im big fan of him
I can't hear the name of the guy playing in Scarf and I can't find any info about this band, could anyone direct me to where I could listen/read about them please?
Band is Scarve -- check out Irradiant or Luminiferous -- drummer is Dirk Verbeuren, played with Soilwork, Aborted, Devin Townsend, Jeff Loomis etc.. He now is in Megadeth
They all get to say their ideas on their own instrument in NW. That's the way Tuomas works too. Tuomas himself said he's not opposing any ideas for guitar solo for example. Same with other instruments.
Everybody, if you like Hahto, be sure to check out his work from 1996, a demo from a band called Enochian Crescent. I should have it uploaded on my channel. It is his best work when it comes to demanding, fast and innovative drumming. It is absolutely mind-blowing!!
I love Kai as a drummer but also as a man who smiles a lot during his performances. You can literally feel the joy he brings to the stage. Carol, my wife of forty years, and I had the great pleasure of seeing him live playing with Nightwish at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on May 18th, 2022. It was such an amazing show, an incredible experience. Thank you for this interview.
Great attitude respecting all types of music. We all have our preferences, but we don't have to disrespect the other styles. Kai Hahto is an amazing drummer. I wish I could play half as good as him. I wonder if he teaches?
I like that you play wintersun on the scene changes but you should have atleast chosen songs that has him playing. The most recent album is fully vst plugins. Only guitars are actual instruments
Happy early birthday to Kai.Kai’s name sounds so cute that your name sound just like the virtual RU-vidr Akai Haato and it translates in Japanese into Red heart.
He never really talks about Wintersun, and he hasn't really spoken about the band much since he started with Nightwish, even when he was just filling in. I'm really hoping there is no bad blood between he and Wintersun.
He recently confirmed on Facebook that he is still part of Wintersun and Teemu posted a picture with him from this week on Instagram. So everything is fine I think.
