We have been reflecting a lot on what it’s taken to deliver the rebuilding and reconnecting of the railway, the harbour and the roading system following the Kaikōura earthquake.
While the final push to open SH1 north of Kaikoura - a milestone finally achieved - was astounding, it has in fact been a full year of effort from so many people. More than 1700 people from across NZ and around the world joined together to repair and renew the coastal and inland transport networks. Making this video has helped us revisit the extraordinary steps taken to get to where we are today.
This is ‘our story’.

Visited NZ 4 times and travelled the Kaikoura route, what a fantastic country and a fantastic job of rebuilding you’ve done.

Incredibly lucky that it happened in the middle of the night. Looking at the number of vehicles using that road during the daytime there would have been hundreds of people buried in the landslides or hit by those gigantic rocks. Incredibly there was no one on the road and not one injury took place.

How Kiwi survive in all matters of Mother Nature & her fury to the point of destruction & off course NZ's hazardous Earthquake Fault Lines. How wonderful SH1 looks & will be awesome to be able to drive on it. Thank you from me - Repairs a wonderful achievement.

At 7:30 it says "130 piles installed (each 720m long..." What? By piles you mean the poles in the ground? Nearly a Kilometre into the ground? is that a typo?

Yes I was wondering about that, it must be a new world record.

They would have been sunk to bedrock to withstand future earthquakes. They are called piles, not poles.
