Beautiful footage capturing a military parade on the Western Front in July 1917.

Wilhelm II's leadership during World War I is being reconsidered with a more nuanced perspective. While he played a role in the war's outbreak, recent scholarship highlights his efforts to prevent its escalation and his genuine concern for his people's welfare. Notably, Wilhelm II, known as the "Peace Kaiser" before the war, was among the only politicians who greatly opposed and tried to prevent the onset of World War I. Wilhelms son, Crown Prince Wilhem, said in 1914 after the outbreak of war "The fact that we were so effectually prepared to defend ourselves is now being used as an argument to convince the world that we desired conflict."
True or not, this is certainly a statement worth considering in the scholarship.
-
Wilhelm II's post-war stance, particularly his opposition to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, is gaining greater attention. As one of Hitler's most vocal critics, Wilhelm condemned the Nazi party's actions and ideologies, demonstrating a commitment to principles of democracy and peace. "For the first time, I am ashamed to be German" Wilhelm famously said after the Kristallnacht in 1938.

Stay tuned as we continue to unveil more exclusive discoveries from our research project as well as development glimpses from our upcoming film, "To Hell and Back."

Note how the Kaiser hides the weakness in his hand by resting it on his sword hilt, the result of by this point decades of practice. Also the fellow shaking his head at 0:52, a subtle seemingly involuntary motion preserved now for over a century.

this event appears to be included in All's Quiet on the Western Front - the 1979 adaption not the recent GERMAN PROPAGANDA VERSION - the same background music is playing - the soldiers are aligned and respond in the same manner - in the film the Kaiser is in a car not on foot and he is led by two bizarre and Nazi looking motorcyclists which had to have been inspired by Hitler rather than historically accurate - the Kaiser does indeed pin medals to soldiers lapels also as shown here - whether these two events in film and historical are one in the same I have not researched yet - the Kaiser likely visited other areas of the Front - can we claim that somewhere in this footage stood Erich Maria Remarque the soldier-novelist ?

There is many films of troop inspections by Kaiser Wilhelm, this is just one of them. We are locating them one by one through our research project. It is surely plausible he was here but keep in mind the Army was 13.5 million soldiers so it is unlikely.

Damaged in his delivery which he blamed on his mother's English doctors, which led to a lifetime dislike of England. His actual delivery, though, was by a German doctor who is the one that damaged the arm in the breech delivery. Hypoxia during the birth probably left him with mild brain damage. Remarkable how a difficult birth had such extensive negative consequences on world history, the echoes of which affect us today, 160 years later.

Fascinating footage.Disturbing to think that by the time this was filmed well over a million German troops had died in the trenches ,for basically fuck all.

Yes indeed. This was July 1917, so of the 2.4 Million military fatalities it's safe to assume 1.5 million of their army had been killed by the time this was filmed.

That’s a fine cut blazer being worn by the navy officers. Very well cut. I would happily wear that as a walking out jacket minus the bling. I think there was a Saville Row equivalent in Berlin. Pity the Kaiser rocked up to the Isle of Wight regatta in the wrong type of footwear and was made to look a complete fool. I actually think we should have stayed out of the war and watched them slog it out. The French never really appreciated our assistance and we should have sat back and taken advantage of the situation.

It probably would have been a lot better for the world if Germany had defeated France in the 40 days they thought they could. The British would have gone home - they were already planning a retreat to the channel and an evacuation just prior to the first battle of the Marne. With a quick German victory there would have been, no civil war in Germany, no Nazis, no great depression, no fall of the Romanovs and rise of communism in Russia or elsewhere, no WWII, no Holocaust, no disintegration of Austria-Hungary, no demise of the Ottoman Empire nor the subsequent conflicts in the Middle East through to today.

That has been the major narrative for a long time. Recent scholarship emphasizes the good things he did. I recommend the new book titled “The Innocence of Kaiser Wilhelm,” which debunks the propagandistic narratives of the era surrounding Kaiser Wilhelm II. He was no more evil than any other leader during the war.

Not even of his time. Churchill and Lenin were both contemporaries to Wilhelm. The former had supported the installment of a blockade for food supplies affecting the life of german civilians in the hundreds of thousands. The latter redirected the damages of the great war against his own people. Wilhelm II did nothing of the sort. If you blame him for the war itself that's also quite misleading provided the anglo-french influence
