Our vet team and keepers were already heavily involved with our partners at the Department of Conservation's Kākāpō Recovery in helping to monitor, hand-rear and provide health checks for all 71 surviving kākāpō chicks that hatched out this bumper breeding season.
It was during this time that the team noticed that critically endangered kākāpō chicks were falling ill to a fungal disease called aspergillosis, so it was all hands on deck to treat and save the remaining chicks with our veterinary colleagues Wildbase and Dunedin Wildlife Hospital.
