@@KittyCatFurbabiesMaria1972 For me my fav Limahl song is "Love In Your Eyes" I'm also a fan of Giuseppe Solera (Dino Solera) who plays a sax solo in this song :)
I can't believe nobody said anything about John Read's incredible job taking on Nick's bass parts, most of them were very technically demanding. As a long time Nick's playing fan, I'm very impressed
@and321nowDifferent funk styles. Like comparing Louis Johnson & Bernard Edwards. Both are great, just different. Music is better if you don't make it a contest. Nick got into Chapman Stick, Fretless and prog area Mark didn't. I'm a MK fan, no a dig at him. Nick's also been voted best bassist in multiple bass / prog mags.
@@adc2327 Yeah it’s sad watching them without Limahl. I’m not even a huge fan of Limahl’s voice necessarily but Nick couldn’t play the entire bass part and sing lead at the same time. So even when he was still handling the bass duties we were kind of cheated. To me Nick was the star musician in the band. The keyboard player was next for the cool sounds he was getting from his synths. Nice job on guitar with the e-bow in this. All of them were good. It was just sad seeing Nick singing the songs sung by Limahl after he was kicked out and expecting the crowd to react the same way.
Saw them in 1983 then again in 2000s when they all got back together, met them all both times, lovely guys, i had an enormous crush on Jez, the drummer in 80s which my husband kindly informed him of when we met them in 2000s 😮
Fun Fact : Limahl later record "Big Apple" "Lion's Mouth" "Turn Your Back On Me" and even "Shouldn't Do That" in his "The Best of Limahl" and some of budget greatest hits that featured his music.
2 tygodnie wcześniej zagrali dwa koncerty w Warszawie w Hali Gwardii. Wyglądało to identycznie jak na załączonym filmie, a wiem to bo tam byłem. To były czasy!
This footage was amazing! What a charismatic frontman he was! He also sounded amazing. Loved how Turn Your Back sounded with his chapman stick playing. So danceable!
Nick has always been my favourite. I still appreciate all the band members and how talented they are. Not all are in the music industry any more. Thanks for sharing this footage from a long time Kajagoogoo fan.
@@tashaimpressions As I remember Nick still making music as sideman and his own / collaboration project. Limahl also still performing live and I love his live performance of "Too Much Trouble" and " Love In Your Eyes" very cute and underrated songs.
Isn't this so cool? I'm blown away by Nick's contributions with Tangerine Dream and progressive rock with recent Fish on Friday. Have you heard his daughters' music? The Beggs Sisters (w/Nick) are great. He's a lovely approachable gentleman.
@@peterbellwood5412 Yes, also love Nick with the mute gods, especially the song night school for idiots. And once again voted no.1 bassist by prog rock magazine. Not only that, he's mad as a box of frogs, some of the things he does are hilarious.
@@PlasticGirl65 Ikr. The Mute Gods with Alex Lifeson as guest guitarist😲! Have you seen his responses to 'cold callers'? "Yes I do! But I feel happy now. Because you care about me. I love you." The one where he's sitting with his bass waiting for the intro to Steven Wilson. Does his nails😂, devours a cake, reads a book, then BAM right on cue!
But the worst fact is that Beggs doesn't play bass but tries to replace Limahl - instead of playing His Instrument and replacing that Teenie Magnet anyway... it's a never ending story
@@wolfgangdr.dahlke8510 Absolutely, they have changed practically nothing, moreover, they acted as if the world was going to end in a few months and people did not grow up in the meantime. They still have fans to this day, and I don't think they are teenagers, and on top of that, young children these days also like Kajagoogoo.
Great performance, Nick is a great front man. The only sacrifice is his having given up his bass playing for this version of Kajagoogoo . Gotta love the gun belt.
5 was a great number, limahl was the key that unlocked their incredible synergy. What a great shame they were too immature to realise it. All extremely talented musicians. Nick in this concert is just flailing - he is very talented but does not have charisma, nor a captivating tone to his voice. His energy is hyper and brittle. I always wondered why kaja disappeared like a puff of smoke, limahl was the one I remembered out of them all and could not understand why they suddenly vanished, way back in the day.
Ein Sonnenscheinchen der Nick, immer am strahlen. Ohne limahl ging es auch. Übrigens ist er auch underrated Bass Player. Sehr schade weil er wirklich großartig ist.
Sooo underated band... Tears in my eyes everyday when i watch them, cause they dont exist anymore as band.... My favourite band, Nick is my favourite bassist. Because of him and my father i became bassist. Great performance and great voice by him. . But who is that bassist playing on this live? And of course thanks for uploading all of this for our hearts.
It was actually Nick Beggs that formed Kajagoogoo! He then asked Limahl to join the group and after 3 albums legal fighting by Limahl made the band get rid of him. It left Beggs and the band with only one option, to front one of there own as lead vocalist. They made an attempt at rejoining after VH1 Band Reunited 2004 got them back together. After remastering their old singles and a flopped new single Limahl made it impossible for the band to carry on with pushing more legal issues and that was it! Just thought id tell you the REAL story.😊
I don't understand why they got rid of Limahl. They stated in the past it was because of his image which seemed to appeal to the 'teeny-bop' music and they wanted to get away from that look. So imagine my surprise when I see Nick, here with his hair like Limahl and makeup . Did he always want to be the front man and wanted Limahl out of the way?
Pretty sure their manager fired him, and because the band started to fail commercially as a result, so I imagine Nick is trying to revive that image in an attempt to return the band to how it was, but it ultimately failed. Nick is a good singer, and personally, I think they should have split the vocals while Limahl was with them.
@@kajafreur527True about that manager thing. Without Limahl they made what I consider their best album, one of my favorite ever by anyone "Islands". It has Jazz Funk Fusion aspects that wouldn't suit Limahl so well. As much as it was a commercial decline, it was quality over quantity /sales. Such a great album, well worth it.
@@markdown01 I completely agree. Islands is my favorite album too. However, I feel like an album that had a kind of cycle, one song sung by Nick, then the next by Limahl, etc., possibly with some duets thrown in, and some interludes to appreciate their fantastic musical ability, would've been their best move. They both have fantastic voices, but each encapsulate completely different moods and I think they'd just need to find the right balance. I also think that they should've stuck with the name "Art Nouveau", as Kajagoogoo, while it was certainly attention grabbing, was a pretty crap name, it made them look like they weren't serious and silly, so people kind of just laughed it off without actually appreciating to the quality of the music. If they'd stuck with the original name, they would've probably been taken a hell of a lot more seriously, and they'd have been appreciated more by audiences.
Nick has said that the pre-existing core of the band (himself, Stuart and Steve) wanted the band's music and image to mature with the audience on the model of Duran Duran, which changed quite significantly in style between their s/t debut and Rio. Where Limahl would have taken the follow-up album was clear from his solo release 'Don't Suppose', a frankly more Euro sounding approach that ditched a lot of the quirks of the British new wave scene which are evident on 'Islands'. It was handled terribly, but this kind of thing just happens, especially when you have an existing band that brings in a talented lead singer.
I've been a Kajagoogoo fan since 1986 and had the White Feathers tour video, but a;ways wished to see video footage from the Islands Tour. I've got a live cd from the tour in Tokyo. 36 years later I finally get to see video footage from the Islands tour, I'm so happy to see this!!
Islands and Crazy people was right to speak are two of my absolute favorite albums from the 80s to this day. Separating from Limahl was the best decision for me. Nick isn't a great live singer. But I find his voice all the more pleasant on the studio versions. Great band that had their very own style of music.
Limahl solo works also very underrated "Love in Your Eyes" was cery cute song ❤ Both of Kajagoogoo (Mk2) and Limahl may not success as they deserved but in music it was very good stuff ❤
@@bloodyscalp94 limahl? Didn’t t hurt Duran or Spandau did it. Before limahl all they had was there friends and family coming to gigs. Personally, I’d take the screaming girls any day over obscurity.
I don't like the gun, Beggs not playing the bass and his makeup. Said that, I love his voice, Islands is my favourite Kajagoogoo album and the three albums are better than a lot of bands entire career. Thanks for uploading this video
Great group, but it's a pity that they broke up with Limahl, they would certainly have achieved greater success instead of competing in the group. Greetings fol all Kajjagoogoos guys! ❤
He had the stage persona and with some vocal lessons probably could have been a great lead singer in his own style. But could he have written more good songs/vocals to make this version of the band a success... is the question...
I think that beggs had plenty of presence to lead a group, and while sometimes drifting in tune (hello, recall the first simon le bon?) he performed the often unusual vocal lines accurately. In fact i would not build a pop band with both limahl and beggs because one is enough.
Unfortunately this concert is cut, cause after Big Apple you can hear that Monochromatic was starting... 🥺 ps: Anyway thank you so much! This is amazing...
@@UFO_computers Ha, I love Ariel Pink collaboration with Drugdealer very much :) And Mike Lindup (From Level 42) latest album also very good. (Annie McCaig who do backing vocal in this live also performed with Level 42 too)
Nick just didnt have the looks in comparison to Limahl. Also tended to over emphasise the lyrics.....without his brilliant bass in view the whole thing was gonna crash swiftly.
Podrian haber sido mucho mas banda de lo que fueron. Algunas decisiones erradas le quitaron poderio a nivel mundial aunque a mi me encanta Kajagoogoo!!!.
I’m surprised many say that Nick can’t sing. Yes he can. Have you ever heard Simon Le Bon, Paul young and OMD sing live? That’s a 👎🏼. Nick’s not a showman, he’s a musician. The whole show should’ve been like turn your back on me with instrument ❤❤
Very interesting. I never knew that after Limahl's departure Nick Beggs was doing lead vocal solely with an extra bassist there - in actual concerts. In playback based stage shows like Peter's Pop Show in Germany, Nick was syncing both.
Too shy wasn’t credited to Limahl, so he didn’t write that hit song. If the band wrote it then why shouldn’t they sing it? Limahl was just a front man. He did what he did so he had to go. It just goes to show that the real geniuses were the people playing the music not the person singing the lead vocal with the weird hairdo. It’s sad that their fans don’t see it that way. Nick beggs is a superb bass player and it’s strange he chose here to perform without a bass. Singing lead and playing the bass can be done. Perfect examples look at Sting and mark king from level 42
They tanked and broke up after firing Limahl. Only someone who’s an amateur that’s NOT in the music business would make such a statement plus Limahl was one of the writers of Too Shy which is very important.
"Too Shy" was credited to Limahl as well. He was actually credited 8/10 songs from "White Feathers" for lyrics. The music was credited to Kajagoogoo (all members), the lyrics were either just Limahl or him with Nick Beggs. He was more than just "a front man", plus he was the one who met Nick Rhodes and got them signed in the first place. Of course this doesn't mean that the band weren't great musicians. I personally love all of their albums from the '80s, but Beggs' vocals just weren't nearly as good as his bass playing.
I was completely thrown when Nick ran out on stage. I knew he filled Limahl's role, I just wasn't expecting it on this video, from an 84 performance. Taking Nick off his bass is kinda' a crime. He can sing, can do it, but Limahl was his own brand; kinda irreplaceable.
Saw the name of Annie McCaig and Level 42 was quickly popped in my mind haha (She's occasion backing vocal with Level 42) Nick Beggs always look like Nick Heyward long lost brother. Steve Askew always look like Paul Hardcastle. Stuart Neale always look like Sean Penn and Jez Strode always look like members from A-Ha or Mezzoforte :)
I'd say he was a lot better than anticipated, and filled the role. Thing is, Limahl was his own brand, quickly. So they couldn't really replace him. It worked...but just wasn't the same. And the worst part being it took Nick off bass.
@@crustytoenails6664 I actually miss Nick Beggs as Kajagoogoo lead singer. As a singer he's very cute and funny personality but also have a good voice. Because when he's went to co-formed "Ellis Beggs and Howard" it was more darker tone.
I prefer Kajagoogoo without Limahl. The music was groundbreaking and had a lot of variety. Nick Beggs is a great vocalist. Islands and Crazy Peoples Right to Speak are amazing albums
Trust me he hated every minute being front and centre... one of the best Bassist in the world has played with everyone.. and I don't mean in a perverted way either
@@Plrang Limahl was a diva who didn’t want to share royalties with the rest of the band from what I know and Beggs didn’t think this was right. That’s why Limahl got fired. Plus the albums with Beggs on lead are amazing as I mentioned earlier and still hold up to this day. I still listen to Islands and Crazy Peoples Right to Speak
They got rid of Limahl thought he gave them a bubble gum image and Nick Beggs was already in the band on Fretless Bass Guitar he took over on vocals so!
Nick has a decent voice but please put him back on his strength, HIS BASS. Bring back the band sound with Limahl and his killer voice and stage presence, Nick has very limited stage presence. Getting rid of Limahl was a huge mistake.
I can't imagine limahl's voice color fitting songs like big apple or turn your back on me , they lost onstage sexy appeal yes , but musically the islands album was a step up
@@cnfuzz Thx. "Islands" was a different thing, I don´t know, if Limahl would have fitted. "Crazy People’s Right to Speak" (Kaja) also was quite a good album, even more "grown up", but nobody took interest in it sadly and the band split up after.
Nick the better chick up front. The band more cohesive without Limahl. They having more fun, being themselves, and songs even better on that follow up record.
