This waterfall is a great little break from driving along U.S. 2. It's not big, but it has natural charm.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

Kakabika is an Ojibwe (Chippewa) word to describe small squarish rock steps associated with waterfalls.

I read that it meant “sheer cliff” or “thundering waters.” There is another, much larger waterfall in Ontario with the same name so I figured it was a word that means something about a waterfall.

I live like five minutes from there, gotta see it when the dam is wide open after a few days of rain or in spring. All the water getting forced through that tiny ravine is kinda nuts. There's also a few more impressive waterfalls (and areas) to the west on US2 nearer Marenisco. They require either a short (20-30 minute) hike or a little longer drive off the highway though. One more thing about Kakabika is it got a postal stamp for being a wild and scenic river 2-3 years ago (or rather the Ontonagon did, with the picture being from Kakabika). You did capture the the spot that's on the stamp about a minute in I think.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 года назад
Wow, thanks for all that. I would have never thought that this place had been on a stamp. That's cool. I imagined there'd be more water in the spring, but it sure wasn't disappointing in August either. Next time I pass by, I'll probably stop by again, no matter what season. I did stop at Bond Falls down the road if that's one of the bigger falls you were talking about. I actually preferred Kakabika falls though.
@Bazilli
@Bazilli 3 года назад
Bond is probably the most famous waterfall around here but I was talking closer to Kakabika there's three more waterfalls (more than that actually but 3 easy-ish to get to). Nelson Canyon Falls (20-30 minute hike through a beautiful area, trail isn't much but there is one), Judson Falls (few miles down a dirt road off US2, then you need a high clearance vehicle or hike 2 miles down a logging road, little tricky to get to also just a bit out of the way compared to the others), Yondota Falls (due north of Marenisco 4-5 miles down a dirt road off US2. Falls are right off the road pretty much, very cool spot.) There's more too but kinda gotta go out of your way and they're not as cool in my opinion. And if you're out that way, Black River Harbor or Presque Isle River mouth, or the Montreal River (the beach there has some cool cliffs) are all very beautiful. Another thing to check out is Wolf Mountain near Marenisco. 15 minute hike to what may be the most prominent lookout in the county. It's like 4 miles down a gravel road off US2.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 года назад
@@Bazilli Those sound like great spots to visit. I like the more out of the way places. I have a Jeep too, so going down the logging trail might be fun. Thanks for the list, I'm going to save it for next summer.
