Meet the kakapo, or owl parrot (Strigops habroptila), a nocturnal flightless bird and endemic to New Zealand.
According to recent DNA studies, kakapo belongs to the oldest surviving family of the order Parakeae. This is the only living flightless parrot and the heaviest species of parrots. And there are very few of them left. Kakapo is an endangered species, numbering only about 150 individuals today.
First of all, kakapo is unique in that it has hardly changed since prehistoric times and is a contemporary of dinosaurs. Its ancestor and ancestor of the genus was isolated from other parrot species about 82 million years ago, when New Zealand broke off from Gondwana. Kakapo also separated as an independent species about 30 million years ago.
Kakapo was discovered by an English ornithologist in 1845. And the generic name comes from ancient Greek and translates as "owl".
