It is weird, how other nations treat the Maori language. I had some one tell me Maori is pronounced Mayori in their Language and I asked why their language was basing their pronunciation on the English spelling of Maori instead of how Maori pronounce it. lol, they never answered though.

xEmpty.Abyssx he's doing pretty well actually. I met him about a year ago, and he seemed even more animated than the last time I saw him, about 4 years before that. He's got new knees and a pacemaker and he says he feels better than he did 10 years ago!

native people used to keep them as pets; like most parrots, they make pretty good companions however, they're critically endangered rn, so the numbers have to get way up before we can even think about allowing them as pets

they would do if not for all the introduced pest species including cats, ferrets, weasels, stoats, dogs, hedgehogs, mice, rats, possums, rabbits, hares and of course humans

Stephen Maunsell if you think cats/dogs, and even humans are pest species, then you're clearly ignorant/don't know what a pest species is. Though, of course, you're onto something. The introduction of rats/pigs has caused the death of a great many WEAK AND UNADAPTABLE SPECIES WHICH CANT EVEN MILDLY FEND FOR THEMSELVES..

Many parrots have long life expectancy Not Pulverman "can't defend for themselves so it's not invading species to blame" Heh. The species, as it is, evolved into something that didn't need to deal with invading species. The only way they could survive is by evolving into something capable of doing so. And anyway we would be losing the species since now it has evolved into something else because of us messing around.

It's because it evolved without any land predators, but like in Oz, when settlers came several centuries ago, they introduced cats, dogs, feral pigs and boars, rats, stoats and foxes. Since 1970, there's been less than 200, and in 1995 there was only 50 odd. But conservation efforts have succeeded and there's now about 140.

Adding to what Skulls Ain't Dead said, a kakapo's fight or flight response is to climb a tree and jump away to fly. The problem is that they can't, so they just fall to their deaths.

One other thing that makes the kakapo a very fascinating animal, is that if you look at more closely, due to it has forward-facing eyes, whiskers that helps it feel in the dark, and that it lives down a burrow and makes its territory unlike many other bird species, it's perfectly clear that the kakapo could most likely be evolving into a mammal. The information given is because it behaves less like a bird and more like a mammal. So, the kakapo is in a sense, a missing link between birds and mammals.

They like humans. They often come to meet us in their forest to say hello. They let humans pick them up and they climb up and sit on our head. Their name means "night parrot" in Maori. They have a bass voice and make boom boom sounds when happy. When TV crews enter their forest to do a kakapo piece the narrator often ends up playing with the kakapo so much they can't film the segment.

Ever see his kakapo narration? His bird climbed up on him and played for a long time causing DA to laugh so hard they couldn't finish the show. It was a wild bird that just walked up on them. They are so endangered that NOBODY has a pet or a zoo kakapo to borrow. All the ones you see are curious wild ones.
