Oh how I wish this video weren’t my most viewed video as the techniques I was showing here are naive and borderline imbecilic. I’m so sorry :) The techniques shown are for demonstration purposes only and were done mainly for their fun/play value. Please check out our other videos for our more "combat-oriented" training sessions. Train safe and train smart!
My FMA background includes Rapido Realismo Kali, Modern Arnis, and some limited Pekiti Tirsia Kali and Dekiti Tirsia Siradas.

Actually kali is an older art than wing chun. Ng Mui lived between 1662-1722. Magellan was killed in the Philippines by Datu Lapu Lapu where kali was described by a Portuguese writer and sailor in the book Suma Oriental 1512-1515. Kali and silat were brought the islands when they were part of the Majapahit Empire - 1293 - 1527. They are branches of Kalaripayattu.Shaolin kung fu dates to the 16th - 17th century, with the Bodhidharma legend at least.

Kung-fu is older than Kali - u pick ONE system of Kung-fu - Kali is an umbrella term like Kung-fu - so which system of Kali were they using?

People think this MA is for MMA or some shit. It might work if you’re really good at it. This MA is more like a close range fights. I’ve seen my friend used this MA in a fight and that was pretty sick cuz he finished him in a second and he almost break his opponent’s arm.

@Bakunaga I have practiced krav maga, jkd, wing chun and brazilian ji jutsu but i don't think they can compare to eskrima since eskrima or arnis is so much more effective and deadlier in my opinion, because unlike wing chun, fma by itself with no influences is perfect. You see unlike like other martial arts, fma is fine on its own with any major influences. Thats what makes filipino martial arts the most effective out of all.
@Bakunaga
@Bakunaga 12 лет назад
@copypacercopypacer you realize that all of those martial arts you stated including FMA are made up of different martial systems right? Kali/Arnis/Eskrima has obvious influences from kuntao, silat, western fencing, and in some schools even jiujutsu. I agree that kali is very practical but also has it's limitations.

@ARTBUS1 actually, contrary to popular belief the battle of Mactan was a true battle not a duel. From Pigafettas' journal who was the chronicler of Magellan, he said that Magellan was struck by spears hurled by natives and died covering for the retreat of his already beaten men. They sailed with three ships but only had enough crewmen to run two ships back due to the heavy losses incurred during the bloody battle.

Kali and Silat does work. The reason it doesn't work in MMA is because of distance. Kali/Silat is more for close quarters combat similar to how jkd and wing chun work. In a mixed martial arts cage you have freedom of movement, in buildings and tight corridors you do not. Some of the best security and special forces units use Kali and Silat. It is deadly effective in the right situation.

The last answer precisely explains why the sport is different than an actual self defense event. One is a sport, it is staged, in a ring, like boxing is in a ring. In a real self defending, battle for your life event, it would be different. Even an untrained individual going about their day, if attacked by an assailant, may and has full potential to kill the assailant many different ways. And if attacked like that, in example an attacker with a knife, club or gun, the one who fights back, if it is with the intent to finish-kill the assailant, stands as much chance of being killed than vice versa. This is why it is stupid to attack someone lethally. Because that individual is going to fight to survive, and will not stop until they have killed the attacker.
@rodskie25junior57

Your wrong. This is only good for movies not in real life situation. A good boxer can easily knock that guy out cold and that's the reality.

Kali works in MMA, the reason we haven't see any UFC champion from Kali background is its smaller talent pool. Had Philippines have bigger tourism than Thailand, there would be more US gyms train Kali than MT Silat works in MMA, the reason we haven't see any UFC champion from Silat background is mentality. >50% of Indonesian ONE/Pride players came from PSHT background, while the rest came from Pencak Dor where >50% of Pencak Dor players came from Pagar Nusa background But only few, if not none of them utilized silat technique. Most, if not all of them utilized BJJ instead. Meanwhile, none of Silat world class player interested to touch MMA. Al Jufferi Jamari is a kickboxer, but he only do kickboxing to enrich his conditioning methods for his Silat Had Indonesians have faith in their own tradition, they could advance further. Simple logic, there're too many players better in BJJ than Indonesians, but not in Silat. Yes BJJ is better at ground fighting, but they should've do BJJ only for complementing their Silat, not dumping their Silat for the BJJ....

Huh? Really? How in the hell did you figure that one out? lol. I'm Filipino and I respect all FMA but to say that Wing Chun is a rip off of FMA is mental delusion. Almost all close quarter combat styles in Asia have a common parent but to blatantly disregard a thousand years, maybe more, of Chinese martial arts as a main influence of MANY Asian close quarter styles is OBSURD. lol

@Mider999 You are right but engagement for a cop in uniform against a criminal is a slightly different matter. In my opinion (I have held a concealed weapons licence and been an avid shooter for over 20 years)is that if in a street fight situation if you dont have your gun out and trouble starts up close like it most often does by the time you see the knife you wont have the time and distance to get a good shot off. Taking one hand out of the fight to reach for a gun may get you killed.

@Bakunaga kuntao and silat is part of fma and the only western fencing i know in fma is the ones that are used in sports, which is not meant for actuall fighting. the only system that uses fma with jijustsu is eskrido, man fma schools only use whats native filipino since it is known to be more deadlier and lethal then what is taught from bjj and wing chun schools.

I'm not an expert. I'm just a Physical Education elementary teacher learning MA from youtube (but I did earned a yellow belt in taekwondo back in 1995 but afterwards no more formal training). I started my interest in learning Krav Maga and Kali on my own for my own protection on the streets. And I can personaly say that even without formal training, Kali actually worked in street fight My aggressor (obviously without training) went throwing wild punches at me. At first, all I could do was slap his punches away. And then at the right timing he threw a left jab at me that I outward block with my right, that he followed with a right cross (or was it a right hook?) that I blocked again with the same right hand followed by the traditional left hand grab, and from there (left) I knuckle-fisted the guy with my right, followed with a left hook to the face, and then spinning back-fist again with my right. It was a simple move but i looked so much like a trained fighter for someone who only learned stuff from the internet. Wait... I'm not sure now if it's Kali.

I think techniques need to be a bit varied depending on your opponent like if you are up against a smart and well-trained one or even just someone physically larger and stronger, you probably will think twice utilising some risky and complicated moves. You gotta go for the kill the soonest you can like going for the eyes or just run away.

After twelve years, still nice to see. Sure a lot has changed since in FMA, particularly in Escrima and Arnis, but Kali sticks mostly to the Base and their roots in Panantukan and solo/double Baston. And its great and so much important to repeat this basics even if you are high rank student or master. keep up the great work and spirit of FMA Mabuhay to all Escrimadores and practising fellas out there.

But I'm not sure about Kali empty hand against knife attacks. Knife attack on the street is not just a single-action movement. Just like wild street punches, they will stab you multiple times successively. So I don't think a kali empty hand flow wont work. I'd rather have a stick or a lead pipe at hand, or if possible escape. Or better yet, pull out a gun.
@bladesociety
@bladesociety 5 лет назад
I agree completely, sir. I would never be comfortable facing a knife wielding assailant while unarmed. And in a street encounter using melee weapons, I'd me comfortable with a lead pipe in my hand than any knife. And tama din po kayo. In the street, the gun is king.

Great video, showing various moves. I like the way people on the most part, keep their eyes focused on the movements of the opponent; it's very critical in giving faster times to react. If fast motions of attack are not seen from their start, it is likely too late to stop it because the brain takes time to give the signal for our muscles to move, so every millisecond counts. Thanks for sharing, from the wonderful country, Philippines!

Just making a point - FMA's are old, and have actually survived into modern times and modern martial application with their integration into several military forces. Battlefield and street tested gives me a pretty high opinion of them. I have survived having both knives and guns pulled on me. Changes one's perspective.

wing chun is very low when it comes to defense against a knife and empty hands. Escrima does a much better job at that. Wing chun is more traditional then Eskrima, where filipino martial arts like arnis or eskrima are more compatable with todays world, because its much dirty then wing chun. When it comes to wing chun, you have to make it your own, while eskrima it already comes with it. Many wing chun dirty styles come from Panantukan.
@Bakunaga
@Bakunaga 12 лет назад
@copypacercopypacer you sound like you're tryina convince me of kali being deadly..I know! I agree! BUT silat originates from the Sri Vijaya Era in Indonesia and Malaysia not Philippines. Kuntao is in some fma but originates from Chinese Quan Dao(Fist Way). and doce pares and kombatan use jiujutsu. If you think fma unarmed is quicker than wingchun then I don't think you've fought any good wing chun practictioners man. Kali is deadly in cqc and armed. Otherwise Krav maga offers more options.
@Bakunaga
@Bakunaga 12 лет назад
@copypacercopypacer I practice kali and agree that panantukan is a great tool in combat but I don't believe any one system can be "better" than another. If a martial system wasn't good then it would simply falter and wither which is not so with Wing Chun. I've practiced a bit of Wing Chun and Jiujutsu as well and I don't see where they rip anything off of fma. If anything fma has ripped off from alot of other styles itself. There is no modern system which is created without external influence

He used jujitsu, fencing and karate ect. He also used kali in one of his JKD philosophies. Because kali has probably one of the most effective knife fighting systems.
@copypacercopypacer
@copypacercopypacer 12 лет назад
Wing chun is better known as a sport and better as a sport rather then what Panantukan and Eskrima has to offer. Panantukan is one of the worlds most deadliest fighting system including other FMA such as eskrima/arnis. Eskrima allows the user to instant kill there oppenet.

@@bladesociety I've applied different things from different martial arts and crafts, lol, for over 30 years in handling Emotionally Disturbed Persons (EDPs), criminals, and terrorists, in 7 years of working in psychiatry, and 23 years of law enforcement and military special operations, so there is that body of work, not fighting on bouncy mats as in mma or UFC, or doing movies as Bruce Lee, that has grounded and humbled me to recognize real world, workable and applicable concepts for less than lethal, working with EDPs, when you have to use haptics, as in hapkido and aikido, in order to not hurt psychotic people, and as well, against criminals and terrorists, how to kill or maim, close quarters, charging bull attackers with knives or shanks, which was illustrated somewhat here, which is why I said, "nice flow work." The charging bull redirection and trapping work here, as well as some of the Chi Na, body breaking for limb destructions, can all work off some of these flows, which I have actually worked against inmates in close confines. And yes, I do not like the "freeze frame concept" of this, "stop and I'll do this and that" type shown here, however, they are such as can be tested with such equipment as Spear High Gear or similar full contact equipment and pressure tested, which is where such "freeze frame," training can then, either be proven or discarded - as some things which, when your ammo runs dry or your space is confined, you may have to apply in a worst case scenario, as we cannot always dictate - break contact and shoot, for every edged weapon situation.
