Exactly as I was taught thousands of miles away. Nothing is lost here. You are still seeking the truth.

Got up and did these combos myself! Thank you, Sakan! Lately I've been preoccupied with empty hands combat I can't remember the last time I picked up my rattan sticks. :( Manonuda is lucky to have you (and vice versa) ! :)

Happy that I could inspire you to train in some way, brother! I wish all of my viewers were as kind and supportive as you've always been... Hope you have been well! Also would love to see a stick flow video from you again!

Thank you for your support. I learned this from my teacher in the MANONUDA system, Guro Gianfranco Lanucara.

Nice video, too bad you didn't put this up earlier. :) Last week I sparred with single stick vs nunchaku (a round each with each weapon and both of them padded for protection), I'm more familiar with nunchaku, so my striking with the stick was more repetitive and predictable than when I used the nunchaku. The video comes out this weekend, if you wanna watch. Would have been nice to have practised some of these combinations before. Gonna have to try them out :)

Weapons fighting is always a challenge, so think of your sparring as a work in progress. I've learned a ton since Guro Gianfranco shared his MANONUDA system with us. Lot of the drills show the importance of distance and range management, also how to use broken rhythm. Make sure not to over commit to your strikes and use the pull backs and feints in combinations with your slashes. Looking forward to your video!

Thank you for the tips :) My primary focus for self defense is unarmed sparring. But sparring with weapons does give a better understanding of using either a conventional or improvised weapon, and I think any form of sparring, even playful experimentation will add something to your self defense skills. Movement, timing, improvisation etc. :) I did one time try full contact stickfighting briefly, with elbow pads kneepads and a helmet, and it was different from regular full contact as I felt a sharp pain when hit in spite of the adrenaline. Good learning experience. It's different with padding, but it was both fun and a good learning experience. I did some flashy things, especially with the nunchaku, where for pure self defense it would be better to keep it simpler, but when I do those things with the nunchaku on my own, I need to also practise them in sparring as well to improve my understanding. :)

That's awesome man. Yeah I think weapons sparring is important as it adds a sense of urgency to your pattern recognition skills, range judgment, and timing. These are the important attributes of fighting and will improve your unarmed sparring game as well.

Btw, in case you wanna watch the nunchaku vs baton video, i just uplaoded it on my channel. I use the baton for most of the first round, I'm definitely more used to the nunchaku, which I start out with in the second round. We tried to use the weapons a bit in grappling, but failed due to lack of experience. Looking at the two instances where we each try to use the nunchaku/baton for chokes, I can easily identify what we did wrong, but in full speed on the ground it's much more difficult than from just watching as you know :)

Thanks for sharing this series, Sakan! There are many solo patterns flow with the stick, but those combos are what I consider to be the fundamentals of stick fighting combos, and they're never presented this simple way. So I decided to put them together to have the basic striking combos. They are, actually, in level 2, rather than 1, as I integrate the Redondo strike in Level 2. I got it on my list of tutorial for long time, but I am actually happy you put it out there. Maybe in the future I'll put it out as well. Thanks again for sharing it, and thanks for the credits.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Guro! This is one of my favorite solo drills you showed us in the seminar and think it is vital for sparring. Of course it isn't as smooth as your movements, but it was a way for me to get some reps in during Songkran holiday! I would still love to see your tutorial of these movements and how it is properly done. Thanks as always!

That's more than perfect, Sakan! Thanks for sharing it. And yes, they are essential combos for sparring!

MANONUDA - Quick question regarding angles. Should all the strikes in the drill follow the same angle, or should the redonda be vertical? I only ask because we have a similar drill in Marcaida Kali, work all three types of strikes along each angle on the clock face.
@Manonuda
@Manonuda 7 лет назад
Aaron, the Redondo is slightly angled, as you can do a perfectly vertical one only if the target is very closed. That means that the tip of the stick will hit the opposite side of your center line if you're loaded on the open position it will hit on your left side, in closed position it will hit on your right side (assuming you're holding the stick with your right hand). Hope that is clear. But, a vertical redondo is also very possible. It all depends of the angle and the position of the target.
@aaronireland1108
@aaronireland1108 7 лет назад
MANONUDA - Thank you sir. That is what I thought. As I mentioned, Marcaida Kali had a similar drill, with the concept being the ability to launch an angle with a "Broken" strike, retracting to where it came from (witik in Inosanto terminology), "Fluid" strike where it progresses through to the opposite side (lobtik) and "Circular" strike where the strike originates from the opposite side, and continues through like the Fluid strike (redondo).

Are you doing a number 1 then a redondo,then a number 2? So how is the redondo on the other side done?
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 7 лет назад
With this drill it helps to avoid thinking of a numbering system. Rather think of open side (forehand) strikes and closed side (backhand) strikes. The open side strikes are forehand pull back, forehand slash and forehand redondo. The closed side strikes are backhand pull back, backhand slash, and backhand redondo. The only strikes that bring you to the opposite sides are the slashes. For example the first combo is forehand pullback, forehand slash, backhand redondo, and then backhand pullback, backhand slash, forehand redondo. Hope that helps.

This is great! Here in canada I took an introduction of Filipino martial arts (here it's called arnis I think) and shotokan karate at the same time to test the waters of martial arts, I ended up getting my yellow belt in both. It's been about a year since I've had to actually use it; while that's great and all, I've also lately been thinking about completing it. My first plan was to get my yellow belt (or beginners) in every martial art I can get my hands on. However after a few months of research, I've realized that I want to master the Filipino martial arts (arnis), it's the only martial art that I've actually fully connected with and it really seems like a "art". Any recommendations on where I should learn it? Should I try to learn the Canadian Arnis or go find a 100% Filipino dojo (it's called a dojo ya?) Love the content, subscribed.

Thanks for the support my friend. Yeah I think you should just go with your feelings and join the group that you connect with the most. It might require to you take a few lessons from both schools. I'm not sure what a Filipino Martial Arts training group or gym is called. We tend to use Dojo for Japanese arts. Good luck and best wishes in your training!

+Sakan Lam thank you for the reply! I'll take your advice and search for the best match for me! By the way, does the last name salinas seem familiar to you? My teacher told me he was well known in the Filipino martial arts community, I was taught by his son; who would you say is the greatest Filipino martial artist?
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 7 лет назад
I haven't heard of the name Salinas, but will definitely research it once I get the chance. I'm not sure who the greatest Filipino Martial artist is to be honest. I only know my teachers and their teachers... From what I've seen I think Guro Dan Inosanto is amazing for his contributions to the art. Skill wise I think Grandmaster Bobby Toboada looks to be one of the best.. also I think GM Nick Elezar of Nickel Stick moves incredibly well. It's really hard to say, so I'm not sure!
