By doing the wrist twists too much you also end up over tensing the tendons in the arm. It's a great way to get tennis elbow. Realistically going through twirling strikes slowly but repetitively is a safer way to develop the dexterity and endurance needed without increasing the risk of injury

I’ve been watching a few of your videos since quarantine started-and noticed that your free hand slaps your inner elbow once in a while. When and why do you do that? Is it to keep your free hand occupied? I noticed in my videos that my free hand dangles, as if it’s been chi-blocked, lol.
@mcanastacio
@mcanastacio 4 года назад
lol @ chi-blocked! It's a tendency I picked up. It keeps my free hand (called the safety hand) active and awake so it flows with my armed hand (called the live hand). It allows my safety hand to eye jab, check, etc. in co-ordination with my weapon strikes. It also heavily develops when you train double stick, so naturally it transfers back to your single stick as well. Lastly, it's a physical cue to let me know I've successfully transitioned into (or back into) a "closed position"

Solid content Mark. One quick question, why do you twirl with an open palm. Shouldn't it be firmly closed?
@mcanastacio
@mcanastacio 5 лет назад
Personally, it's more of an exercise and warm up then a committed technique. I find being too tense doesn't allow the stick to be manipulated as well. A lot of the times, I use it as a bridge to carry on the momentum to and from a strike, in which I close my grip
@mykemanlangit993
@mykemanlangit993 5 лет назад
@@mcanastacio Got it. Thanks for the reply. I just started learning some basic stick drills for about a month now and I am having a hard time twirling with a closed grip. Is it ok to have my grip loose?
@mcanastacio
@mcanastacio 5 лет назад
Myke Manlangit having a tense grip will take away the ability to flow smoothly because of all the stress you put in your hand. I always tell my students, firm, not loose. So it’s a balance between tightening up for snapping strikes or committed strikes vs transitioning and flowing. Just relax! You’ll know when to grip hard and when you don’t need to. Remember, the stick isn’t always in combat 24/7. (As in, you have twirls, safety hand, footwork, etc.)

@djalals.moharrer5510
@djalals.moharrer5510 2 года назад
Rattan. Rattan (Kali wood) is the most commonly used material for bastons in Arnis training. They are light, flexible and good for training in speed. They are made from dried and cut reeds and are typically cut 26"-30" in length, 3/4"-1" in diameter and rounded at both ends.

Thank you for this video I have subscribed to your channel, and am about to check out your other tutorials. I bought a pair of sticks because it looks cool to see someone whirl them, and perhaps not a bad way to exercise at the park. One question, and I mean no offence by it, does all the twirling serve a specific purpose, or is it more for show. I think perhaps if you are actually going to use them for fighting, which I think is unlikely (unless you take the sticks to an actual fight, which would indicate premeditation and go against you in court), it may confuse your attacker, regarding the direction from which the actual blow will come, is this the reason?

I'm only doing it alone at home and I have no records of training in any sorts of martial arts and also I don't even exercise. But because I got intrigue in this FMA style I wanted to learn it!!! Unfortunately there is no available training centers in my area and if it did, my Mom won't let me to. I hope master can see this comment and maybe master can give me guides as a beginner. I'm going to make this my nightly drill now 😂

Any rattan or bamboo stick will be just fine. Stay away from any hard, dense wood like kamagong in the beginning as you are training the basics first. Don't stress too much about the weapon at the end of the day, it's all about using your brain!
@ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣΓΟΥΖΟΥΑΣΗΣ
knife training is perfect at close range but stick training (Kali Enscrema Arnis) makes you untouchable since a knife attack can be neutralised from distance. Even gun threat under certains conditions can be tackled...

As of now this video has like 70 thumbs down and thousands of thumbs up, so most people (including me) agree that this is a great instructional video (that I’ll likely watch many times0

Hey Mark, question...kinda have a disagreement with my teacher...he says i gotta be able to do everything with a 26 stick,thing is im overweight also have big muscle arms,well i cut a.28.to 29 stick so i can reach movements like the ones IN THIS.video.u show, and i can almost make them too...the question is...26 stick is a standar size or can i make it to 30 inches cut for better and comfortable manuevers??...(im working on my weight, cause i know i have to, but i used to lift weights and muscles sometimes dont fade away so easy), please.reply,thankx 4.the video ive been learning a lot, more than in my class.
@mcanastacio
@mcanastacio 5 лет назад
Personally, I don't believe there is a "standard" size because many people use different lengths, widths, material, etc. It depends on what your training goals are and what you plan to do with it. Of course with close range techniques, a shorter stick would be easier to manipulate in tight scenarios. But with long range techniques, a longer stick would more than likely benefit you. I personally use a 26" most of the time, but that's just preference and convenience. Again, these are solo drills to help improve your overall skill but when it comes to striking, grappling, locking, disarming, etc. The stick is the last thing on your mind. It should be what is the best choice for you, for who you are right now. A good saying that I continue to teach my students is that "the stick is an extension of your arm, you are in control - not the stick" So hand me a branch off the park tree and I'll do what I do. I think your teacher is saying such because it is what he/she is used to and what he/she knows to teach you. Everyone has their preference and beliefs in what they do.. But in the grand scheme of things, there is no one-size-fits-all stick, let alone standard weapon. Keep up your training and good luck with everything, thank you for watching!
