Kalij Pheasant makes beautiful trilling - clicking sounds as it ascends tree to roost for the night, its crest or white kalgi feathers glowing at dusk and jauntily waving or moving back and forth in a sprightly fashion!
The more drab brown female and the blue-black and white male Kalij Pheasant hang out in our wildfilmsindia sanctuary in the western Himalaya.
Treading through sunlight and shadow, this murgha cautiously walks through the forest understory, even as Maroon Orioles calls in the backdrop in its clear melodious fluty whistle... at the wildfilmsindia wildlife sanctuary in the western Himalaya. The Kaleej Pheasant pecks at some greenery, looking for buds and grass seeds. The female is more drab brown, compared to the brilliant blue-black of the male with its kalgi or headgear!
Difficult to hide when you're sporting so many colours to impress the females, and its the peak breeding season. Bright white crest and fleshy red eye patches make the male Kaleej Pheasant quite a stunner, but tough to camouflage too! This murgha walks around among branches as it prepares to roost for the evening...

As night falls, Kalij Pheasants start making their way up into the thicker canopy of moderately-tall trees, to hide away for the night. They do not feel safe on the ground... This murgha and murghi couple are seen at the wildfilmsindia bird sanctuary at Pari Tibba Estate in Motidhar, Mussoorie.
