The tale of Savitri and Satyavan is one of the most celebrated and poignant love stories in Hindu mythology. It epitomizes the power of devotion, love, and determination. The story is found in the Mahabharata and has been retold in various forms over the centuries. Here is a detailed account of their story:
Background
Savitri was the beautiful and virtuous daughter of King Ashwapati and Queen Malavi. Ashwapati, the king of the Madra Kingdom, had performed severe penance and prayed to the Sun God, Savitr, to bless him with a child. In response, the goddess Savitri appeared and granted him the boon of a daughter. The princess was named Savitri after the goddess.
As Savitri grew up, she became known for her beauty, grace, and wisdom. When she reached the age of marriage, many suitors sought her hand, but Savitri decided to find her own husband. She embarked on a pilgrimage, traveling through various regions, and eventually met Satyavan, the son of the exiled and blind King Dyumatsena of the Salwa Kingdom. Satyavan lived in the forest, helping his parents with their simple life.
Savitri's Choice
Despite knowing that Satyavan was destined to die within a year due to a curse, Savitri chose him as her husband, unwavering in her love and commitment. Her father, King Ashwapati, and the sage Narada tried to dissuade her, but Savitri remained resolute. She married Satyavan and went to live with him in the forest, serving her in-laws with devotion and love.
The Fateful Day
As the foretold day of Satyavan’s death approached, Savitri undertook a rigorous vow of fasting and prayer for three days and nights. On the destined day, Savitri accompanied Satyavan into the forest. While he was chopping wood, Satyavan suddenly felt weak and lay down with his head in Savitri’s lap. Soon, he passed away.
At that moment, Yama, the god of death, appeared to claim Satyavan’s soul. Savitri, undaunted, followed Yama as he carried away her husband’s soul. Yama, impressed by her devotion and determination, tried to persuade her to return, but she continued to follow him, engaging him in profound philosophical discussions about duty, righteousness, and the nature of life and death.
Savitri's Wisdom and Devotion
Yama, moved by Savitri’s wisdom and unwavering commitment, granted her three boons, with the condition that she would not ask for Satyavan’s life. Savitri cleverly asked for the restoration of her father-in-law’s sight and kingdom, her own father to be blessed with a hundred sons, and finally, she asked for a hundred sons for herself and Satyavan. This last request effectively necessitated Satyavan’s return to life.
Realizing he had been outwitted but deeply impressed by her purity and devotion, Yama granted her the boon, restoring Satyavan to life and blessing them with a long and happy life together.
Legacy
The story of Savitri and Satyavan is celebrated as a symbol of marital devotion and the triumph of love over death. Savitri is revered as an ideal wife, embodying the virtues of fidelity, determination, and wisdom. Her story is often recited during the festival of Vat Savitri, where married women fast and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands, drawing inspiration from Savitri’s unwavering love and courage.
This tale not only highlights the strength of human will and devotion but also underscores the profound philosophical and moral teachings of Hindu mythology, making it a timeless and inspiring legend.
